all those walks, injuries, errors, not exactly a paragon of baseball greatness. Good night from Milly and Frankie.

Yup.

A win is obviously always a good thing, but this isn’t the kind of win I’m going to look back on and be inspired by the play.

by philkid3 on Apr 28, 2009 9:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Sure

but not every win needs to make us feel warm and fuzzy. One of the things this team has specialized in is mostly warm and fuzzy losses that just had one frustrating thing missing. Winning games that you just won, period, like the last two is one of the things that good teams do.

Yup

The fact that this win does not make me feel warm and fuzzy makes me feel warm and fuzzy.

Basically

went off on the ump provoking CD to return to the argument. Let a guy get his word in. Don’t remove the mask and make an issue. That sort of thing.

Huge paraphrasing.

yeah

basically the issue was that the umpire started following CD and engaged the coversation. Grieve went off on him. Immediately after he got tossed, Grieve says “He was waiting to do that.”

Called it exactly right.

AB of the game

Cruz in the 6th. After Blalock popped up, that inning started to have the feel of getting the bases loaded with no outs and not scoring. Cruz laid off some pitches that the old Cruz never would have and drew a bases loaded walk. His plate discipline improvement has been nothing short of amazing.

few points

1. This is a game the Rangers normally mail in. They looked tired and made Anderson look like Cy Young.

2. First pitch swinging will come back to haunt this team.

3. They need to come out and score some runs early for Millwood so he doesn’t need to go 8 innings.

i know that we got called out on strikes at least 5 times… I have to wonder what the umpire was doing and if he was screwing us over… Also, what happened with Chris? I understand if he just got pissed b/c he got called out with a guy on third, but was it a bad pitch or just a terrible ump?

before tonight game

Millwood was first in IP/GS and pitches/GS. The Rangers SPs were also first in pitches/GS. I am sure someone will be doing an analysis of the Rangers pitchers vs the Nolan Doctrine to see what effect it has had on the Ranger SPs. I am actually confident in the SPs and if they can continue to show the improvement they have so far, it will start to be reflect in the numbers by the end of May.

well

we won’t see any results until July/August.

But it’s a bit misleading since rangers pitchers wilt in July/August anyway (is that right or is that a myth?). Maybe the biggest thing will be seeing how a rested bullpen operates.

The nice thing about this season

is the hope that the guys who might be added to the staff later in the season could be as good or better than the guys who will theoretically wilt. That’s unusual for this team.

rotation

It is going to be interesting to see how the starting rotation gets manipulated going forward. Harry (Harrison’s nickname that Salty uses) showed in his last start that he needs to stay in the rotation. Sometime around June 1 Holland should be ready to start. If Feldman improves on last years production then he should be in the rotation also. So sometime in June the Rangers could have 6 pitchers for 5 rotation spots.

My guess

We’ll have at least one injury to the current rotation that will open up a spot by then. If not, you keep going with what you have, let Holland continue to dominate in the bullpen, and work the phones to get Padilla or Millwood out of here.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

i don't see the crunch

it’d be nice if harrison and feldman both worked out but chances are that one of them isn’t – or nto enough to prevent you from going with holland if that’s what you want to do.

curious, what do you want to trade a pitcher for? not that we’re completely stocked at every position, but we can’t really ask for anything that would help the big league club. maybe some relievers (I dont’ like trading for relievers) and some pitching prospects I guess

Well that is assuming that Harrison/Feldman/McCarthy

all pitch at least well enough to warrant sticking with them. If one or more of them falls flat on their face for the next month, then I don’t think they are completely safe from being bumped out for Holland (also assuming that he doesn’t run into any problems over the next month).

I would just look for the best deal out there. If someone wants to give up a good RP and some intriguing minor league player(s), that would probably fit this team’s needs best. If the best deal out there is for another catcher, I’d still pull that trigger.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

BPA is good for a draft

but at a certain point, our use for the player will dictate the value. We can’t play another catcher and the trade value for all of the catchers we have will decrease if we are carrying three and teams know we absolutely have to trade one.

Webb's been hurt...

…and people are still waiting on Justin Upton to translate massive quantities of talent into being good at baseball.

Looking at that squad offensively

They’ve managed to collect a ton of players who can’t seem to get on base. Their one guy with a career OBP over .340, Connor Jackson has sucked so far, and the result is a dead last in the MLB .301 OBP so far. They’re actually a game over their pythag, which is 7-12.

And now it looks like Webb is gonna be out for 6 weeks or more… they’re in big trouble.

who they got that they will trade?

I doubt they’d deal Haren, maybe Webb, but at this point, Im not sure if i want his arm… It seems like its already in serious decline

Chris (NJ): I am personally offended at how you ranked a prospect from my favorite team, even though I do not know said prospect, nor have I ever seen him play. In my opinion you only have your job because, like your employers, you have an unholy bias towards my favorite team’s rival. Also, you’re short.

Well, his injury would make me wary, but I don't know about him being in a "serious decline"

His tRA* (which focuses solely on single year performance) the last four years have been 3.53, 3.61, 3.80 and 3.36. He’s one of the NL’s best starters if he’s healthy. The only thing is, he’s pitched nearly 230 innings each of the last 4 years – so you do have to wonder if maybe his shoulder is starting to give out.

Even if you where confident of his health though, any deal for him would have to be contingent on a contract extension since since he’d only be under control for another year and a half (he’s technically in his contract year this year, but there’s a team option for 2010). Not having a guaranteed extension in place would be the real reason why I wouldn’t want to deal for him, myself. Unless you’re positioned to make a serious run at a WS title I’m not a fan of handing out huge gift baskets of prospects to get one guy who’s free agency is imminent (like ATL did with Tex and Milwaukee did with CC).

hmm yea,

i guess im just very leary of a guy who is into his middle to later years and is having arm problems… It just screams decline to me. On anoter note, there is a post up about what a couple of teams would be looking to deal and it mentions Jon Rauch on the D-Backs… He’d be a guy id be interested in, im not sure what his #’s are so far this year, but i liked what he did last year. Seems like another quality guy to help us in the 7th and 8th.

Rauch

has been horrible this year.

If you take the worst pitching staff in baseball, then add Kris Benson and Jason Jennings, what do you have???

surprise!!! You have the worst pitching staff in baseball, that's what.

I'd love Webb

but the cost would be too much for a CHANCE at the reward, but not the sure thing (health, signability)

what's especially great about this win

was that my dad (imagine a Grandpa Urine-ish character) just got done saying to me before the Baltimore series that this team will not see 500 for the rest of the year. I sent him a text as soon as the game was over, and I think it woke him up.

Man, that kinda of stuff

annoys the heck out of me. Seriously, there is 162 games in the season, usually people say stuff like that to me just to annoy me.

Well, come to find out

from talking to my brother, who is a former Ranger fan (converted into a Mets fan after he lived up there for a while), my dad will actually call him to brag about how the Rangers are doing and how the future looks bright. So, in summary, he calls his Ranger fan son to bitch about how this team isn’t shit. Then he calls the non-Ranger fan son and tells him how it’s a great time for this franchise and how he’s missing the boat on the 2012 World Series winner. Dad, I love you, but you’re a horse’s ass. With all the senseless needling, stick-poking and pot-stirring, I think my dad actually may be Grandpa Urine.
