So who's the first starting pitcher promoted this year?

Is it Michael Kirkman?

Don’t you love knee-jerking?

Bleier

I’ll go with Richard Bleier. He’s a college arm who has looked good so far in Hickory and his ground ball tendencies could translate well to BAK.

What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.

by clark on Apr 29, 2009 9:44 AM CDT up reply actions

not a bad

guess. I would guess boscan before Bleier if he didn’t get hurt. Bleier is a groundball machine and crafty with his offspeed pitches. I do worry about the 86-87 fastball he was throwing down the other night. If he can’t throw his offspeed stuff for quality strikes, he’s in trouble. These low-a guys will swing at all kinds of crap but that will happen less as Bleier moves up.

Still an interesting kid.

Id say

Kirkman to FRI, maybe Gomez, but id say Kirkman.

he said starter

but if we are including all pitchers, then yeah, Pirate to OKC should happen soon. There are also at least four candidates for a promotion in the Bakersfield bullpen: Phillips, Falcon, Reed and Young all make sense.

That's right.

Nothing to see here though. Just 12 Ks to 1 walk this year. Lefties hitting .050 off him. Righties .182. A miniscule .054 whip. He sucks.

the Rangers already promoted Jared hyatt to Oklahoma City last week and he was awesome for Oklahoma City in his game he pitched for them. He had a 1.59 era in that game. I don’t want to be rude but it’s funny that people here make fun of us over at Crops on the Farm but don’t even know that Jared Hyatt was already promoted from AA to Oklahoma City which is AAA.

remember:

A noun is “good”, but someone does a verb “well”. For example, “Justin Smoak is a good baseball player. He hits the ball very well.”

Also, how do you rank your prospects? Would you really trade Justin Smoak before you would trade Manny Pina, or at least value him less in trade talks? Is this just a hot sheet, in which any player can reach the top if he has a great week, and if so, what has Joe Wieland done recently to justify the top spot?

And finally, I am 98% sure you are doing a bit, but I am willing to play along a little while longer. But one of two things needs to happen…if it is a bit, your posts need to get a lot more outrageous and hilarious, and if not, they need to actually show a modicum of baseball analysis and/or writing ability.

by clark on Apr 29, 2009 9:51 AM CDT up reply actions

Thanks for the advise

I’m not a pro writer as you can tell but I try to explain my thoughs as good as I can. I know that people think that Smoak is so good because he was a first round draft pick for the Rangers last year but Thomas Diamond was a first round pick for the Rangers a few years ago and nobody wants him over Feliz anymore so you have to be careful not to make to much of being a first round draft pick. Do you rmember Drew Meyer? I dind’t think so but he was a first round pick for the Texas Rangers a few years ago and he’s not in the SHOW either. Just because Manuel Pina wasn’t a first rounder doesn’t mean he’s not real good to. I don’t know what round they drafted him in but he’s a catcher who can throw and hit good (I mean ‘well’) and so that’s pretty good to have since a lot of teams don’t.

How can you consider this dumb?

1) Joe Weiland is a right-handed pitcher who throws hard and did super good in the rookie leagues last year. And I read that he was Nolan Ryans favorite pithcer in the Rangers minor leagues. If that’s what people say then I know that he’s probably really pretty good because Nolan Ryan was one of the greatest pitchers who ever lived and he would know a really good pitcher if he saw one for himself in the Rangers minor leagues. Plus he has the same last name as the singer for Stone Temple Pirates who are really a great band from the 90’s that I liked a lot back then. I hope he doesn’t have drug problems like that guy did though. TRUST IN NOLAN!!!!

yeah

Perez is only 18 years old. we have to remember to be patient and let these guys develop. The same goes for Feliz. The guy is the youngest in AAA. He needs to learn how to pitch rather than throw. If he steadily improves this year, then we may see him in September, but I wouldn’t be disappointed if he spent the entire year in AAA. We have some of the youngest guys at each level. No need to rush them.

Remember that at the start of next year he'll still be more than a month younger than Josh Beckett was when he got drafted.

I could see him starting out in Frisco if everything keeps on like this in Hickory.

Obviously his chances would improve drastically if he could wrangle even so much as a late season callup to Bake this year, but it’s not not impossible that he could just skip it all together.

Bakersfield is pretty terrible and there’s some precident for skipping studs right on by that hellhole.

Promotions/Reward

The minors are about development. They aren’t about rewarding players. Perez will get moved when the Rangers decide. I doubt it will have anything to do with reward. That is just silly.

sometimes

performance demands promotion. I guess what I’m thinking is that the team is inclined to bring Martin along slow and steady, but every player has the opportunity to hijack the plan with incredible performance…see Derek Holland and N. Feliz.

by ncrangerfan on Apr 29, 2009 10:59 AM CDT up reply actions

Holland and Feliz

I see those as two completely different cases. Holland almost maxed out his development at each level while putting up great numbers and got promoted. Feliz got promoted on numbers and there are still things he needs work on that could, and probably should, be handled at the lowest or lower levels of the minors

Feliz

Feliz didn’t get promoted based on numbers. How is Feliz going to improve if he is in the lowest levels of the minors facing poor hitters? I’m not sure you have any idea what you are talking about.

by Finnerty.Fan on Apr 29, 2009 12:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Coming from you i'll take that as a compliment

He absolutely was promoted based on numbers. The guy can’t hold a runner on 1st base, has very little if any consistency on his breaking ball, and his command if spotty. That kind of stuff usually is worked on in the lowest levels of the minors.

to argue like this with someone on another blog when you may want credibility for your own blog.

and, you don’t have to go to clinton to get video clips or read scouting reports. there is credibility to a scouting report when multiple scouts say the same thing.

Really? That has to be the dumbest sentence I have ever read on this site and I have read alot of Joseys stuff.

As for stats to back it up his BB/PA % last year went from 8.6% in Clinton to 12.4% in Frisco and now this year its at 18.7% in OKC. Hes walking a batter an inning. He doesn’t have good command right now. Please try and prove me wrong.

I was just asking if you had seen him pitch when he was in Clinton last year. I don’t kjnow why you have to get so mad about it. So did you watch him pitch for CLinton before he went to AA last year?

by RonSpellman on Apr 29, 2009 2:12 PM CDT up reply actions

No I didn't physically go watch him pitch

But theres this great invention called the internet where people who actually did go see him can report back what they saw. After taking in several different peoples opinion and looking at stats I based my own conclusions that the guy is a stud but has deficiencies, one of which being his control.

Now my question to you. Have you ever seen him pitch in person?

National guys as well. Im terrible with names so forgive me if I don’t point them out by name. Cole, Parks, Hindman, Newberg, perryman, etc are some of the local guys I get my info from.

But if you cant simply look at his numbers and see he is having trouble with command i have to call your baseball knowledge into question. Anyone who walks a batter an inning is having issues.

I see your point

I was simply using those players as examples of young players that moved quicker than expected due to performance, numbers, or whatever you want to call it.

I agree that if you disect things further, those two specific players are different animals with different development tracks.

by ncrangerfan on Apr 29, 2009 1:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Disagree to a certain extent

Last year the Rangers rewarded feliz with a promotion to Frisco from Clinton and then rewarded him again this year with a bump to OKC. he still has alot to learn and develop, some of which probably should be done at the lowest levels of the minors, but his performance, regardless of his development, deserved a promotion.

you have no credibility when you plagiarize someone and then say it was an accident.

you also have no credibility when you drop the #10 ranked prospect in all of baseball down so far in your prospect rankings, and then call him a bust.

or when you keep talking about “Bo Vaughn” (neither is spelled correctly)

you don’t know what the hell you are talking about unless you rip somebody else’s opinion off.

That guyy who is supposed to now so much about Texas Rangers minor leagues at the Dallasnews.com din’t even talk about Jared Hyatt at all in those prospect previews things I found on google when he wrote about the best right handed pitchers in the Texas Rangers minor leagues and I say he’s number 10 of all the prospects in the Rangers minor leagues not just pitchers or even right hand ones.

I actually don’t have a problem with you ranking Hyatt so high. I think you’re wrong but no problem going out on the limb and certainly he did well in his minor league career. He doesn’t have a lot of raw talent but maybe he can overcome that. Anyway, you can certainly base your opinion on his minor league track record.

That would be tough

Not only for him but with the guys in front of him to find room. It would take a late season bump to bakersfield this year. An early season bump to Frisco next year along with a late season bump to OKC or jumping straight from AA to the bigs in 2011. With so many upper echelon pitching prospects in front of him I think its gonna be hard for him to get that chance

MJH said

that he thought Perez would be in Frisco in 2010… Im not sure that that is a stretch at all if he continues to dominate Hickory. He’s obviously young, but that doesnt mean he cant be a more polished pitcher and a more ready pitcher than someone who’s a year or two older than him. And you’d have to think that Perez’s development takes precedence over alot of other guys in this orginizations.

Perez

is working on being more agressive and is showing results in that area. Recently though he has tried to dance around hitters after getting ahead resulting in long at-bats. Mark from the blog was at the game and made this observation about Martin:

“Still has a problem closing out hitters. In the 6th inning. Perez had Tyler Kuhn 0-2, before needing 10 pitches to secure a ground out. In the 7th, had Jon Gilmore 0-2, surrendered a 10 pitch walk; had the next hitter, John Curtis 0-2, before he hit a ground ball single on the 7th pitch.”

The point is he still has some polishing up to do (and some filling out to do) and has yet to pitch more than 4 innings in a game after only pitching 60 innings last year. Let’s not rush this kid, but IF he keeps holding batters to a .175 average as he takes on a full workload, surely he will get at least a late season promotion to Bakersfield, no?

by ncrangerfan on Apr 29, 2009 1:10 PM CDT up reply actions

thanks for that, good stuff...

I agree that you have to take the workload part slow with him, but i also think you can keep his load down even while promoting him. But i’ll say this, there is no reason to promote him unless he continues to show improvements and utterly dominates Class A, like what he’s doing right now.

Another thought to keep in mind when considering Hickory’s pitchers is that the league, up to this point, hasn’t really hit well, and we’ve recently played the worst two hitting teams in the league (team BA’s of .212 and .218). There are only 5 of the 16 teams with team BA’s over .250.

In my opinion you only have your job because, like your employers, you have an unholy bias towards my favorite team’s rival. Also, you’re short.

Keith Law: You’re right. I am short.

a game ending before noon, now that's an accomplishment

Hey guys

what’s going on in this thread?

I wondered what the hell

was going on with a 170+ minors thread for a 9am game; reality is definitely stranger than fiction…

Me too... Underrated in my opinion

Will Ferrell was great, story was odd but kept moving and turned out really good. Also, probably the only time I found Maggie Gyllenhaul (sp) attractive.

agree on pretty much all points, I loved Ferrell in that role

he’s just a fun guy to watch. I also loved that they put the two Sonic guys into that movie as Ferrel’s co-workers, i got a kick out of that. On MG, it was borderline for me, at times she was rather attractive, but when i go back and see her in other movies i immediately am turned off.

Brett

any word in your game notes about what happened to Kometani: AZL DL/EXT or released?

back to the games...

In Frisco Big Tommy H held SA to no runs in 5 IP of work to give him his best outing so far.

Lemon finally got a hit and broke out of his slump, Smoak is 1 for 3… Currently in the 7th a 0-0 game

THanks for the update

Sorry for the nonsense in this thread. I take the blame for that. No more crap from me. I realize that I need to open my mouth a little less and pay attention a little more (my friends are another story). I didn’t make a good introduction. Apologies.

Not all that great

but yeah his best game so far. Too many pitches per inning and a bases loaded jam in fourth. Joe Torres, my sleeper for the seasn (after bombing in spring training and going on the DL) is doing well in his third game back from the DL after getting roughed up in his first game: 1.2/3so/0r (in a back to back appearance).

Former Rangers great

John Hudgins is in vs. Frisco.

...and his

outing did not go so hot, got two outs and it quickly went down hill… Adam Fox has a knack for hitting grand salami’s it seems. Smoak is 2 for 4 to stay hot.

Hudgins, almost forgot about him.

Saw him beat King Felix in Frisco a few years ago. I believe it was 1-0, Rashard Eldridge destroyed a Hernandez heater for the only run. Kinsler took a mid-to-high 90s fastball in the ribs.

We haven’t had good luck w/ Stanford players.
