I can't see the M's winning 90 games

but they’re significantly better and the possibility of them finishing above .500 cannot be dismissed.

I thought they had a decent chance at recovery given how everything that could go wrong, went wrong last year for the M’s. The pendulum swinging back just a little was going to bring them back to 75 wins.

Then they attacked some of their internal weaknesses as a team and also brought in a new gm/manager.

Not that hard to see why they’re a better team.

My only hope is that the Angels are so far behind by then nothing they do matters.

They’re a good team, but their glory days are behind them. And as for the M’s, they’re only good as long as Bedard is healthy and they can score enough runs to win. The odds on both of those things happening all season aren’t very good.

They played a lot of kids last year down the stretch (which is an incredibly valuable thing to do) and then there was this major influx of vets brought in this year which probably upset the apple cart.

Everybody is probably stil trying learn how to play together and I’d look for them to bob around .500 until June.

Their pythag suggests they’re a .500 club but I can’t figure out which way they’re going to go (although it should be noted before the season I predicted them to win, I think 86 games and finish a game behind the Angels).

yes

we need a nice cushion no matter were we are in the standings between us and the Angels in late may or June… If we can finish right above .500 we should be better than the M’s, so we cant worry about them too much b.c if we cant do that we arent gonna be in the playoffs anyways. I just hope the Angels keep struggling and bury themselves because i dont think we are really gonna be a team that “buries” anyone in the standings, they’re gonna have to do that themselves.

Interestingly

The bulk of the Rangers games against the Angels are towards the end of the year, when all their pitchers should be getting healthy. Which is even more reason for the team to pace itself now (not rushing Hamilton back is the current example, but its also important to not overwork the bullpen arms early on).

by JBImaknee on Apr 29, 2009 11:51 AM CDT up reply actions

I hope nobody in here starts to use the Hamilton injury

Last year

The Rangers finished 21 games behind the Angels, and 16 games behind the Wild Card. Kinsler and Murphy and a healthy Bradley may have made the team an 86 or 87 win club, but they weren’t anywhere close to a playoff team last season.

Josey is right. One or two injuries can’t be used as excuses unless the difference between the club and a playoff spot is a handful of games.

But NO ONE thinks the Rangers were a playoff team last year

if Kinsler and Murphy stay healthy, so your point doesn’t make sense, and Josey isn’t right. It IS valid to say the Rangers might have finished above .500 last year if Kinsler and Murphy (and a whole host of pitchers throughout the year) hadn’t been injured. And that’s all anyone here has ever tried to argue.

I doubt it.

Has there ever been a team with that many injuries to its pitching staff be successful? Name a team with more injuries than the Rangers in 2008.

The team was 2 wins shy of .500 despite all those injuries. You don’t think there’s a chance they could have reached 81-82 wins with better health? Obviously the pitching sucked last year, who here has argued it didn’t? You’re not making some original, brilliant point. But they sucked in part because there were so many injuries they were forced to dig waaaaay deep in the system and overuse bullpen and young guys. But subtleties like that escape you in your rush to shout your agenda.

Name a team with more injuries last year.

I don't think there was a very good chance they were

going to be above .500 because their pythag pegged them as a below .500 team (by 4-8 games) for most of the season.

They also led the AL in errors committed from tape to tape and teams that do that almost never finish above .500.

The pendumlum simply swung the other way and exactly as I predicted it would.

by Josey Wales on Apr 29, 2009 3:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Worst defense

terrible pitching, tons of injuries, and they still came within 2 games of .500. If the team had fewer injuries there is a good chance they finish at or above .500. I’m not saying they were a playoff team. I’m just saying they might have won 2 more games with better health. The injuries explain none of their glove issues, but they most certainly had an effect on the runs allowed number from the pitching staff and I’m pretty sure no one expected the team to just coast along without Kinsler, though I doubt Murphy makes a huge difference.

Chris (NJ): I am personally offended at how you ranked a prospect from my favorite team, even though I do not know said prospect, nor have I ever seen him play. In my opinion you only have your job because, like your employers, you have an unholy bias towards my favorite team’s rival. Also, you’re short.

Keith Law: You’re right. I am short.

of course you can't play baseball softball or run track

when you don’t have any arms or legs.

Doesn’t stop you from going to school though.

(Wife) "So what do you want to watch on the T.V.? UFC or porn?"
(Husband) "Hmm... well, porn, I guess."

Swine Flu info:

It’s just a version of Influenza A. It has some similar genetic segments to swine flu, so it’s picked up that name. Normally, it doesn’t even infect humans. The best plan of attack seems to be to try to limit the spread so that health services aren’t overwhelmed.

There are two reasons that we are having more success treating it in the US compared to Mexico (although, we have had one person die of it now). One, there seems to be a slight variation in the virus that’s running rampant in Mexico and the one we have here. The one we have here does not seem to be quite as serious…though it’s still not good. Second, we do have antivirals here that we can treat it with. They are drugs that were developed to treat Influenza, but they aren’t used very much because they take a few days to work and normally it’s not worth it to take it by the time you go to see a doctor. Considering the seriousness of this, they are using these antivirals more effectively.
