Ellis, Garciaparra to the disabled list

Rotoworld is reporting that Mark Ellis and Nomar Garciaparra are both heading to the disabled list, with Eric Patterson and a reliever expected to be called up to replace them.

Ellis and Garciaparra both looked like they would be d.l.-bound when they each went down yesterday, so this isn't much of a surprise, and it certainly isn't going to help the situation with the A's, who are apparently going to have Bobby Crosby playing regularly in the meantime.

so by the end of this series

the A’s are gonna have a half of their AAA team in the majors?

Im ok with that

Chris (NJ): I am personally offended at how you ranked a prospect from my favorite team, even though I do not know said prospect, nor have I ever seen him play. In my opinion you only have your job because, like your employers, you have an unholy bias towards my favorite team’s rival. Also, you’re short.

Keith Law: You’re right. I am short.

Yep

and please, no rainout. I want the A’s to have to play with a bandaid roster as much as possible.

Getting way ahead of things...

I’ll be genuinely bummed if the Rangers make the playoffs and then sign John Lackey this winter.

And neither possibility is all that far-fetched…

As for making the playoffs because everyone else is decimated by injuries, I can still sleep at night.

sheets will be cheaper and has a chance to be better… I also, for some reason, dont see Lackey ever being a really dominant pitcher again.

I don't know...Millwood for one more year

plus Lackey, Sheets, Holland and McCarthy/Harrison would be NICE to trot out there next year

there's no way we sign lackey and sheets

but Sheets alone can make this rotation so much better, and you need a definite 6th starter because Sheets won’t last the whole season. My hope is Feliz can figure things out this year and be an early season callup next year much like Holland this year.

This is what I don't get about the A's/Rangers depth debate

It seems like the Rangers are in far better shape for an injury at just about any position. I guess an injury to Young would be the most devastating. But the Rangers have done a good job of eliminating the overrated filler like Bobby Crosby from their system.

I guess if they expect that either Ellis or Garciaparra will be out for a while, they’ll bring up Cardenas

by JBImaknee on Apr 29, 2009 1:16 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Yep

The Rangers are only weak right now at 3B. They are set at every other non-pitching position with at least one ML ready back-up in the minors. Plus, our offense can afford to take a couple of replacement level players and still be infinitely better than the A’s.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

because they are stuck with him, A’s dont want to eat that 5mill…oh yeah he’s a good clubhouse guy and the players like him when most fans wouldve dumped him yrs ago. i’d mnuch rather take my chance with pennington/petit/patterson/wimberly etc

even in an emergency there...

you CAN shift Davis to 3B and play Hank at 1B, DH Andruw…and that’s not anywhere near as bad as the A’s are/would be

3b chavez/nomar/crosby/hannahan
SS cabrera/crosby/pennington/petit
2b ellis/patterson(2b/lf) plus several guys can move over from SS
1b giambi/barton/doolittle
C/1b powell

A few very injury prone guys

Plenty of past their prime guys, and pretty poor defense all around to go with a complete lack of offense. Its a great depth chart.

Do old players suck in 2009?

Granted, Oakland didn’t spend much on their 1999 All Star team. But, is it me or does it seem like that era of old players is finally over? The by-gone PED-era?

I can honestly say, I would not want any super-priced player right now. Tex, CC, AJ, or any other costly players closing in on 30-plus. We know drugs help the old guys. But perhaps that gig is up? I hope it is. At least the blatant ones.

Perhaps M-Young can manage the team the final year of his contract? After him, we are home free. And I hope we stay disciplined. More bang for the buck!

My 2 cents anyway.

Im hoping

Eddie takes the job as player manager then realizes he needs to be just manager… But as is, MY is doing just fine when we all thought he was getting older and worse.

Yes

All I’m saying is, the we have one BIG contract I don’t like in 2009, but I do like the player. If Young eventually slips in 2 years, we’ll have a few options:

1. Make him a DH like Paul Molitor.
2. Player-Coach-Manager like Frank Robinson.

I’m bored.

Here is the thing about the A's

They are always one of those “glass half full” teams with people. They look at the roster and say “if everything works out, they’ll win the AL West!” Which is true for most teams, but the A’s always get that initial assumption (which is why worrying about preseason predictions is always silly). Like every other AL West team, they have their flaws and it doesn’t take much to expose them.

So… the point is that you don’t really need to hope for more injuries. Losing Duchscherer (?) and Ellis shows that the “everything will go right!” assumption isn’t happening. All you should hope is that the Rangers continue to stay healthy (or that any injuries occur in a deep position, like Hammy’s).

What a day.

8 scoreless innings, giving up only 2 hits and single walk while striking out 11.

And he produced all the offense he needed with a solo hr in a 1-0 victory.

If you take the worst pitching staff in baseball, then add Kris Benson and Jason Jennings, what do you have???

surprise!!! You have the worst pitching staff in baseball, that's what.

but for the wrong reasons: Kawakami has been a bust as a starter while Uehara has been pretty good save for his first start vs us. Tx wanted Uehara as a reliever.
