Jamey and Numbers
I read Jamey's newsletters regularly (and have for a very long time). He's never seemed like a guy who was anti-numbers or really anti-stathead.
But lately, with this whole Mike Young clutchness issue, he's taken a very 'smartass-ey' stance with regard to numbers (including his last update fromt his afternoon).
Does anyone have any insight on what has set him off?
His atitude on this issue is very Hindman-esque.

can you explain more what you are talking about?
I think I’ve missed whatever thing Jamey is doing

Jamey is always gracious to the opinion of others.
My assumption is he’s tired of getting inundated by people calling him stupid for believing in something like “clutch”.

Can you give an example of his 'smartass-ey' stance?

I saw his 100 thing
but didn’t think too much about it. His report hasn’t been a stopdown, read every one, type of thing for a few years now. I just think there is so much Ranger stuff out there, its tough to keep up with it all.
Especially now that Crops.mlblogs.com monopolizes so much time.

Nadia, crops.mlblogs.com, rangersorrobbers
pretty much the holy trinity of Rangers blogs.

I went to
lonerangers.blogspot.com, but I’m not sure thats the one you are referring to. It is tragicly bad, but it isnt a rangers blog.
Am I missing some gold?

Went by the catchy and deft sobriquet of “lonerangers.”

I Think....
He probably got some very “interesting” responses to his Michael Young clutch-ness email. He has said in the past on several occasions that he is not a pure sabermetrician, and believes in things such as feel and clutch (as do I). Combine that with his self-proclaimed fandom of Michael and he is probably just doing it in response to all of the “you’re so dumb, if it can’t be quantified through stats then it must be either the Easter Bunny or a leprechaun” email responses. But yeah, I’ve noticed it too, though I don’t think what he is doing is in poor taste or “Hindman-esque”

Just trying to clarify
It could be tongue-in-cheek.
Or it could be serious.
I can’t tell. There has just been a bunch of references to His Clutchness (my own tongue-in-cheek) and some cracks at statheads that I’m not used to seeing all that often from you, Jamey.

I read your posts regularly (and have for a very long time). You’ve never seemed like a guy who was anti-Dirkatron or really anti-Retard Kings.
But lately, with this whole “Dirkatron calling me out on knee-jerking way too hard and starting a diary on a non-issue thing”, you’ve taken a very ‘smartass-ey’ stance with regard to me (including my esteem in this last comment fromt his afternoon).
Does you have any insight on what has set you off?
Your atitude on this issue is very Hindman-esque.

No need to stop
Again, I don’t care either way. It shouldn’t matter anyhow, as I’m just one of your many, many readers. I’ve just never seen you take this type of stance in regard to numbers/statheads in the many years I’ve been reading.
by tlt29 on Apr 29, 2009 5:46 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Here's the thing
The Newberg is a fan. He says so himself. He’s not supposed to be unbiased. So take it for what it is, and don’t get worked up about it.
I don’t read Newberg daily, but when I lived in Missouri a few years ago he was my only source of Rangers info (the TX A&M listserve, I think it was). And in return for that, he can be as snarky as he wants whenever he wants, he has a pass in my book.
by Oddibee on Apr 29, 2009 4:46 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
yep, right on
and i want it to stay that way…I can go to alot of other places to get unbiased reporting, but i like my Newberg in the same way that i like my TAG on the TV.
Chris (NJ): I am personally offended at how you ranked a prospect from my favorite team, even though I do not know said prospect, nor have I ever seen him play. In my opinion you only have your job because, like your employers, you have an unholy bias towards my favorite team’s rival. Also, you’re short.
Keith Law: You’re right. I am short.

Jamey
is the Godfather in my book. His reports will always be a stop down and I appreciate every one of them (as I’m sure most of us do, not on a soapbox here). I don’t want him to be biased.
By the way, I believe in “clutch” too. Numbers can tell you a lot of the story, but not all. I think that is the difference between statheads and those who actually suited up and got dirty. Yep, I said it.

Yes
Suiting up and getting dirty is something stat heads need to learn about. Then they’ll realize that playing in the mud is just as important as shaping their numbers. Then, they will understand.
I mean shit, it’s not played with a fuckin slide rule.
