Sickels on David Murphy
John Sickels has his latest "Not a Rookie" item up, and this one is on Ranger fan favorite David Murphy...
I'm afraid folks are going to be a little disappointed in his outlook for Murphy, though:
Murphy should have a long career as a platoon/fourth outfielder, perhaps not living up to the expectations created by his draft status and his '07 outburst, but certainly a player with value. If he can boost his production against lefties, there's still a shot he could do something Greer-like.

I doubt many people would take issues in that.
A platoon role as a left hander is what many people have him as, and he doesn’t insist he has no chance to be anything more.
And most people have him out of the rangers lineup by next year when borbon arrives, noones been claiming he is an irreplaceable all star.
the preceding post was a great success.
I seem to recall...
…much outrage last season over Murphy being described as a platoon/4th outfielder.

at what point do you pigeon hole him
if you want him to develop against lefties, at some point you have to play him against lefties. that’s pretty tough to do on this team right now.
I agree with the sentiment
it’s one thing to think that murphy probably won’t amount to anything more than a 4th OF/platoon role.
It’s another thing to not at least give him some AB’s against lefties when your team is terrible and there aren’t too many other options.

The sounds of revolt are deafening
The left handed side of your platoon is effectively your 3rd outfielder, and there are a number of teams where murphy could be in that role. The Rangers may not be one of those teams much longer, but that doesn’t change the player. You flatly insisted he was nothing more than a 4th outfielder and didn’t leave any possibility of improvement over his minor league track record.
People got weary of your constant negativity about him. Its not that you outright bashed him, but being the last to say hes playing well and the first to jump on him when he struggles will get a few responses…

Yeah, saying he’s a good 4th outfielder is “constant negativity.”

Yes
And I don’t see how “constant negativity” describes my treatment of Murphy.
Sideshow? Andruw? Sure. Murphy? No.

yep
This is the year for him to show if he can handle lefties or not and that will decide if he’s a platoon hitter or a regular starter. I’m beting on Murphy to show he deserves to be starting full time.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

that sounds exactly right
hell, even through in the greer comp (at least as a possibility). what more can people ask for?

Sounds about right...
although the only thing I think Murphy can do that is “Greer-like” is play LF.

I agree with the outside shot at greer
murphy was pretty decent last year

He certainly has a chance to be a white LF who is overrated by Ranger fans.
I don’t see him putting up the kind of OPS+ as an everyday player that Greer did (unfortunately).
I also don’t see him being given an ultimately disastrous contract extension by this team (fortunately).

Howsabout Greer-lite?

Yes we can! November 04, 2008
He has to increase his BB rate by 5-7 points
Lower his K rate by about 3 points, and just generally become a lot better at hitting baseballs before he’s anything like Rusty Greer.
I think the most optimisic comparison for Murphy is probably Kevin Mench, providing Murphy can magically bump his ISO up 40-50 points above his career average for a season or two.
