"He will not coddle them. Nolan Ryan doesn’t coddle." - Jeff Passan
I don't get it
why would Davis in any situation hit behind Murphy? Davis is by far the superior hitter, especially in regards to power.
Bring on April 6th!
maybe Davis is more strike out prone
and so is Cruz. I don’t really know. I agree with you
That's why they call them business sox
the only reasonable reason would be if murph was a .360-.375 obp guy
and hes not.
i have little doubt that davis will be hitting 5th-6th by the all star break though. a lineup sport or two to start won’t make much of a difference, though it is indeed kind of stupid.
the preceding post was a great success.
everyones rotation ERA sucks in the spring
our opponents is certainly worse than ours.
the preceding post was a great success.
Because Ron "trusts" Murphy more than he does CD.

lol is that supposed to be surprising?
Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.
I noticed some optimism around here in regard to
our rotation, but I have no idea where that is coming from.
It's spring
pitchers are working on things, getting into shape early on etc. numbers are skewed.
McCarthy has looked pretty impressive based on reports this spring.
Harrison has been working on a new pitch.
Feldman and Benson haven’t been bad.
Millwood and Padilla suck, but they are veterans.
i wouldn’t hold much stock in spring numbers. the main stat i’m looking at is how many of our starters are leaving camp on the DL or banged up. That’s zero. Hurley wasn’t going to make the rotation, but he had a shot. Our major/only injury of note has been to Benoit. Contrast that with our division foes. They have not been so lucky.
Bring on April 6th!
That is a good point
but still I can’t get too excited simply based on the fact that at the moment we’re healthy.
it is hard to get excited about the pitching staff (worst era)
but health has been the major concern. we used somewhere around 14 starting pitchers last year. that is absolutely ridiculous. Millwood and Padilla are still serviceable veterans. McCarthy is the wildcard, and has a chance to do good things (the health concern is definitely there).
I’m not nearly as excited as if we would have had Ben Sheets here, but what excites me is the possibility of signing Sheets when he becomes healthy and having Holland and Feliz up later in the year. Adding those three to the rotation would be an exciting proposition.
Bring on April 6th!
That's right
It could be a lot worse (Carlos Silva, Jarrod Washburn?)
"Yeah, like I had a chance there" - Lancaster batter, after striking out against Derek Holland

yeah
the angels score over 110 runs in 10 games. I’d imagine anyone they faced wouldn’t have a good ERA
Bring on April 6th!
Isn't the cactus league
massively hitter friendly?
"The idea that the Rangers are going to be a solid contender for a number of years is a fantasy." - Adam J. Morris
#3 SP
BMac to be #3 SP.
Brandon McCarthy will start the season as the No. 3 starter, and Kris Benson will start the club’s fourth game — the Detroit Tigers’ home opener. The coaching staff decided he was better suited for the hoopla that goes with an opener.
http://startelegramsports.typepad.com/foul_territory/
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
Are they overanalyzing
things a bit because they are afraid of a bad start?
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
I'd rather temper McCarthy's emotions
so he doesn’t get himself hurt in Detroit’s opener.
Bring on April 6th!
That reasoning might be comical, but Benson does have something like a 1.6 ERA in Comerica Park
Small sample size, to be sure, but he’s had success in that park.

Yeah, he's only OBPing .333 coming into the day too

Seattle
will field a worthy challenge, as will the Twins if Mauer is out, so will the Blue Jays for that matter
x
Seattle is going to bat Ichiro 3rd this year, so they’ll probably be better.
Twins – Mauer being out hurts, but any lineup with Morneau, is better that what KC will put up.
Blue Jays – nothing to get excited about, but definitely better.

I would hope
that god’s gift to baseball management, Mr. Trey Hillman, can figure out to put his best hitter in the right places, but after reading Rany on the Royals, that faith is considerably shaken.
Why would batting ichiro 3rd help them in any significant way?
Their offense is simply bad. Bedard will have to be healthy most of the year for them to be much better.

Right-hander Vicente Padilla said he felt some minor stiffness in his forearm and left tonight’s game after only two innings. He was scheduled to pitch four. I don't pay very much attention to spring training records
but Ranger fans are grasping to anything they can at this point.
What I do pay attention to is runs allowed in spring training which can demonstrate how much pitching depth an organization has and the Angels do very well in this regard.
It’s not a stat that’s a historical absolute (2004 Ms sucked it) but the teams that allow the least runs in the Cactus League generally do well.

Inside Corner Game Story
I had to pitch hit for Evan.
Good writing as usual per mjh
but a nitpick…can we see actual progress from the team during the regular season before we proclaim this team to be on the rise?
Also seemed to be a little bit of cheerleading going on regarding Andrus. I wasn’t at the game but was listening and the Ranger announcers were clear in saying that Andrus would have been out had Teahen not dropped the ball so I’m not sure how much actual pressure he put on the Royals D.
Take it for what it’s worth but I’m …just sayin’.

fair enough, but nobody was more digusted with the April sloppiness of this club the past two years than I have been and I’m pretty sure — based on what I saw in Surprise last week and tonight in Frisco — that this bunch is going to show up with a lot more focus. Just trying to share my observations. Certainly, I could be wrong.

You write very well and we share a disgust for sloppiness (loved “Bring Me The Head of Ron Washington” Volumes 1 & 2) but c’mon, they need to prove something when it counts before anybody can call them a team on the rise, especially in light of what most non-biased prognosticators are predicting for this bunch.
Everybody will have a much better book on Elvis Andrus by early May and just how ready he is for The Show.

eh
Don’t be one of those people who draws conclusions about a rookie based on a month or two (especially at age 20). He’s going to do some good things and some bad things. But if I’m pretty sure you are going to see something interesting and as the season progresses, you are going to see a lot of growth. He adds a completely new element to this ballclub. And you have to watch him play to comprehend the ways he can influence a game that don’t necessarily show up in the box score.
Andrus was thoroughly overwhelmed when I saw him in Arizona
a couple of weeks ago and he was the priority of that trip. It was a 3 game snapshot but he was unimpressive and his barely above .600 OPS in the Cactus League confirms.
If he is just an average player as a 20 year old this year, the Rangers have a very good, possible star to superstar player in their hands.
Those players are very rare.

Andrus was absolutely nailed
But, Greinke is incredible at not allowing steals, so it doesn’t concern me.
he forced Olivo and Teahan to make a play
and they failed… it was a good throw, but not perfect, and Teahan turned before he secured the ball because he knew that he didn’t have a nanosecond to spare: my point is that Andrus forces a defense to make plays perfectly and if they don’t, he can hurt them
good point
had teahan made a better play he had the guy dead to rights, but andrus coming on so fast teahan didn’t have enough time to react.
had the royals fielded a better 2b last night he likely would have been out, but i understand the point you are making here.
Andrus has that game changing kind of speed and aggressiveness.

looks like strop was beastly again
i want this guy to start the season in the bullpen, he’s just nasty.
tomorrow’s game is on TV and at the RBiA…get to see the ballpark improvements…yay!
