2009 Season Predictions
Sorry, in advance for having the two consecutive fanposts. Not much going on tonight. Thought it would be fun if we did our predictions for the 2009 season. I'll do mine in the comments.

It might be a bit of a homeristic pick, because I like him
But I do think he’ll continue to improve this year, and might put up Cliff-Lee esque #’s in doing so.

IMO, he gets overrated
because of his great story, the no hitter, and general Red Sox Nation exuberance

Yeah
Which is why I think he’ll have a good shot at the Cy Young if his surface numbers look shiny enough – and they where pretty damn good last year (3.21 ERA, 1.27 WHIP in 212 innings).

3.90 tra, 3.64 FIP, 3.29 ERA last year.
He got pretty lucky in ’08, imo.
He was good, don’t get me wrong.
Would’ve been our ace fo’ sho’.
But he outperformed pretty much all his peripherals last year, which doesn’t bode well for his projections, imo.
6.5 k/9 combined with a really serious jump in innings has me thinking he’ll be lucky to finish the season healthy and even if he does he’s a good bet to finish with an ERA closer to ~4-4.5 this year.
He could make the leap this year, but he’s actually my bet to crash and burn this year.
The great thing about baseball is we’ll get to watch and see who ends up being right.

Okay, here we go.
East: Yankees
Wild: Red Sox
Central: White Sox
West: Mariners (Lackey and E-San are out longer than anticipated, the A’s young pitching struggles, and not even the mid-June addition of ruggedly handsome sexed-up golden child phenom Derek “Don’t Call me Dutch or Brian Thomas Will Use His Vocab Words to Disparage You” Holland to anchor the starting rotation is enough to pitch Texas into contention… All four teams are in it into the last week of the season but the Mariners get dominant starts from Bedard and F-Her [the division’s only two "aces"]] down the stretch and win with title with an 81-81 record. The Al West gargles my balls. All the other divisions make fun of us. The Rays look at our final standing and seethe.)
East: Braves
Wild: Mets
Central: Cubs
West: Dodgers
The Series: Red Sox over Dodgers.
AL MVP: Jason Bay
NL MVP: David Wright
AL Denton True: Eric Bedard
NL Denton True: Tim Lincecum
AL Roy: David Price
NL Roy: Cameron Maybin
Roy Halladay Traded?: No.
Higher OPS, Nelly Cruz, or Chris Davis: Nelly Cruz.
Guaranteed Dollars for Strasburg: 36,000,000.
Marcus Lemon Makes The Newberg Eat His Words With Ketchup and Salt and a Small Drizzle of Mustard?: Fuck Yes.
Texas’ Wins Leader: Derek Holland.
Best Fantasy Player on the Board: The Dirkatron.
The 40 Trumps All!!!

Yah, it'll prolly be the Angels. I started to write them in, but where's the fun in that?
If Lackey and E-San make it back by May, they’ll win it easy.
Heck if even one of them is back soon they probably win it.
I dunno, though.
E-San had a jump in innings last year which is always scary, along with a mysterious almost half’ing of his BB/9, which I’d like to see him repeat before I start drinking his delicious sugary flavored drink.
And something about the way Lackey looked last year combined with the reports about his arm this Spring make me think something serious is wrong there.

I wouldn't pick the Mariners,
but, paraphrasing Dirkatron, the AL West is really mediocre. The Mariners have the two best starting pitchers – far and away. They also improved their defense, which should help Silva and Washburn not suck as much. Obviously, they need some breakout years from the hitters to be competitive though. This division is so weak that, by default, everyone starts with about a 15% chance of winning it.

The Mariners winning their division would surprise me less than any other team I picked to finish last.
Just because I now find that an interesting thought, in order of surprise:
Orioles
Pirates
Nationals
Padres
Royals
Mariners
There’s a distinct divide: the top three would shock the hell out of me, the bottom three wouldn’t surprise me much at all. The Mariners would be less surprising to me than any of the other teams by far, though. Not only because I think they’re at least close to as good as the other last-place teams but more because the top of their division is so relatively bad.
The Orioles I actually think are probably going to be the best team I picked in last and could be close to average, it’s just the top of that division is so intense.

I got him off waivers!!! Boosh!!!
Hey, in a deep 15 team league with 5 of slots, CF’ers and steals are both at a premium.
But if you wanna know why I’m the best fantasy player on the board, just ask Troy, Requiem, Nikpin, Rentz, Liamp, Sprite, BDavidson and whoever Mudville Madcows is.
And, yah.
That was actually the final standings.
Dirkatron, ftw.

Also.
If Bedard wins the CY like you predict, I’ll clean up in both of our leagues.

Also,
If you doubled your score last year you still wouldn’t have been within 10 points of me.
Think about it.
That’s a borderline illegal level of ownershipping, if you ask me.
All I’m saying is that if some dude sex crimed me that hard in a fantasy league, I wouldn’t even joke about being better than him at fantasy.
I’d just sit in my room all alone staring at my many Zac Efron posters and cry and cry and cry and cry until maybe I felt like dancing… then I’d cry some more.
