It's borderline prospect night tonight with Richard Bleier going for Crawdad Nation at 6 against Lakewood (Phils). Toolbox Anthony Gose and the struggling Travis D'Arnaud highlight this lineup, so if Bleier is as polished as everyone thinks he is, he should have a good night.

Per Jason Cole, Joe Gaetti has been signed to Frisco to replaced the DL'd Gary Majeweski. As seen by the link, the man is a strikeout machine.
Also, fuck Ryan Sweeney.

Minor note from today
Rangers signed Joe Gaetti to take Majewski’s spot in the Frisco outfield. Gaetti was recently released by the Twins’ organization.
Erik Morrison went down to Hickory to replace Jared Bolden, who was placed on the DL today.
Thanks for the heads up.
"Hustle doesn't cost a dime and it looks good." - Pete Rose as Channeled by Marcus Lemon
I was slightly wrong
Wasn’t signed — Gaetti was actually traded for “future considerations”
And he's quoted...
…in this 1989 SI article about Gaetti’s becoming born again:
The depth of Gaetti’s convictions began to strain other relationships as well. Last January he separated from Debby, his wife of 11 years; recently the elder of his two sons, seven-year-old Joseph, wondered aloud why Dad spent all his time reading “that dumb Bible.”

Struggling in AA
He’s had 3 very good outings, 1 horrible outing. I have a hard time saying he’s struggling in AA right now.

6 IP, 7 H, 2 BB, 3K
I have a hard time qualifying that as a great outing, especially since he didn’t get too many swinging strikes. I’d like for him to be in the bullpen, but as a starter, he’s hardly been impressive.

With an injury history
and not that much great stuff. So yes, he’s borderline. Not organizational depth like Ballard, but definitely not a top prospect.

i have to agree with you
i was hoping/expecting him to look ready for AAA pretty quickly, but i don’t see it. and with his age/injury history, i don’t expect much out of him. Unless Melo shakes things up, I think we’ll look back at the Laird trade as a salary dump in a few years.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
I won't go that far
like I said, I think he’s better suited for the pen.
"Hustle doesn't cost a dime and it looks good." - Pete Rose as Channeled by Marcus Lemon
agreed
but there is a big difference between the potentially dominant bullpen arm we appeared to potentially acquire (based on his silly K rate last year) and a marginal bullpen arm. I am anxious for the team to “unleash” him, so to speak.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
I think they sent him to AA to work on developing his breaking ball.
And also why I don’t put much stock into his stats right now.
i don't like when teams do that
it is one thing to make a player work on a certain pitch, but his strikeout totals this year make me think they have taken away a key aspect to his game. still, good point.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
But after he's spent some time on it
you’d expect to see the numbers get better as he’s freed up to just pitch, now with better a breaking ball.

Johnny Danks on Sunday
Loves me some Danks… BUT
Remember last year when he had 8 K’s and no walks in 7.2 innings and won the game vs Millwood. There was like 40 family and friends of Danks were at the game?
http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/recap?gid=280712113
Danks (7-4) retired 14 straight batters—and was thinking about the possibility of his first complete game in the majors—before giving up consecutive doubles to German Duran and Ian Kinsler in the eighth. Danks left after starting All-Star outfielder Josh Hamilton’s second RBI single got the Rangers within 8-4.
"I feel like I got ahead of myself a little bit," Danks said, still smiling.
It was still an impressive outing for the 23-year-old lefty, the ninth overall pick by the Rangers in the 2003 draft. Texas traded him to Chicago in December 2006 in a five-player deal that sent Brandon McCarthy to the Rangers. Danks earned a spot in the White Sox rotation the following spring.
"He was very good," said Kinsler, the AL’s top hitter (.333) whose double extended his hitting streak to 24 games, longest in the majors this season.
"Obviously having people here, I wanted to perform well," Danks said. "But as far as extra nerves being here in Texas, there wasn’t anything like that."
I hope we light his ass up for 10 runs and win this Sunday.
Danks vs Harrison
sunday looks ugly for us. However, i think we can win. I’ll be at the game.
Anybody going to the game tom night. big night tom. rangers going to celebrate Ryan’s last no-hitter with fireworks and music and some 20,000 fans will get a Ryan statue thingy from southwest airlines. not sure if i can make the game cause my sister invited me to her birthday party and she’s in Houston

He’s up to .351/.462/.568 now.
His OPS is above 1.000.
I suspect this is the last full month he’ll spend in AA.
Could be
Unless this is not legitimate, it’s probably hard to rationalize keeping him there if it’s not a challenge, especially with nothing in front of him in AAA and especially since they are probably licking their chops at the prospect of plugging him in the lineup next year for next to zero bucks.

If he's ready for Opening Day 2010...
Then we just slide Chris Davis to DH, plug in Smoak at first, move up Brandon Boggs into Byrd’s role, and we’ve freed up almost $10 million. Even more if we decline Padilla, which I expect to happen. We’re going to be in a perfect position to add that 1 free agent pitcher that actually makes our team a few games better from 2009 to 2010.
agreed
fwiw… i travel to charleston, sc a lot on business and know where goose creek (actually been there several times) is and i ask people quite a bit about smoak and most people know who he is. Was this already posted?
http://proxy.espn.go.com/chat/chatESPN?event_id=26235
Chris (Dallas, TX): Small sample, I know, but Chris Davis has been sub-awful. Is Smoak close enough to ready to warrant a flip-flop of the two?
SportsNation Keith Law: It’s too soon on both fronts, but I think Smoak belongs in AAA.
Also…
Mark (Moscow, ID): Are there any college bats in this year’s draft comparable to Smoak/Wallace/Alonso/Alvarez?
SportsNation Keith Law: No. Ackley’s the best, and his position is still up in the air.

The fact that Pina has hit 3 HR in April (and that's just three weeks for minor leaguers)
to go with his near .500 BA makes it hard to just keep looking at him like cute little Pina, the novelty fringe guy. I mean I don’t care when it comes, that is a helluva three weeks.
Nah.
I don’t think BA would consider him a prospect until he does this for a couple months. They keep better names off the list with comparable stats every week.
Nothing has changed
save his power and a sky-high BABIP.
His current BB/K% are 5.9/13.7 respectively, near mirror image to his 5.6/13.5 line last year.
His ISOP has doubled(!!!) though to .170, sure to go up after tonight, since he just doubled again.
"Hustle doesn't cost a dime and it looks good." - Pete Rose as Channeled by Marcus Lemon
Well, that’s mostly what I’m talking about. Also, his BABIP obviously has to be ridiculous, but this is a guy who ALWAYS made contact (never struck out) in the past, but had so little strength that he couldn’t hit it hard enough to get hits. Besides the extra base hits, the fact that he’s merely hitting the ball hard enough to have anywhere near that kind of BABIP is very much what is exciting.
by Brett Perryman on Apr 30, 2009 9:38 PM CDT up reply actions
His GB%
a ridiculous 20% right now. For comparison, Chris Davis’ lowest is 32%, Teagarden’s was 30%, Smoak’s right now is 39%. That’s unreal considering Pina’s GB% was 46%, so the numbers back that up.
did he change his swing? Cause this type of power change is really very, very, very rare.

I’ve only watched about 2-3 of his ABs and certainly haven’t paid enough attention to be able to tell. Definitely something one of us should ask about when they’re back in town this weekend. One thing I did think to myself, though, was that he really didn’t look bigger or anything, from where I was sitting. Didn’t seem like his body had changed.

This would be a good betting line, who ends the year with most walks.

yeah, well
i’m pissed. Tony Allen, really? Rajon Rondo for the last shot, really? Dood is gettin outcoached by vinny freaking negro. He got by with talent alone last year, but he’s an inferior coach, and ti’s showing.

I wonder
if they won’t eventually move him to the pen.

i'd give him a chance
in Frisco’s rotation first, and if he falters there, then yeah, to the bullpen. but with a lefty with a live arm like that, you leave him in the rotation until he absolutely proves he can’t cut it there.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
Speaking of dudes who hit
Moreland is up to .321 with another double. He has 4 HRs on the year as well.

He'll move up to AA quickly enough.
Especially if Smoak gets promoted to AAA like people think he will be. He’s got a pretty good bat. I hope the org forgets that he can pitch a little. It would be a waste of what he’s best at.

Bah
Pedro “The Audacity of” Strop struggles, gives up 3 hits, sandwiched around a Max Ramirez passed ball.

let's let Pirate
do it in AAA for a bit first.

OKC
had one of those weird nights where a lot of guys played well and they won in exciting fashion, and yet all the guys I care about had lackluster games. The only guys to not record two hits were Max, Borbon and Golson (although they did all have walks) and Strop was the only pitcher to really struggle (unless you count Turnbow, and really, who does?).
I mean, if German Duran is recording two hits in a game, you know the offense put up some numbers. His getting two hits is on par with a decent player hitting for the cycle. I kid…sorta.

just a thought,
if we are gonna have Smoak as our opening day 1B next year, why not get him up here at the end of July… I think he could more than replace Blalocks bat at that point. Look for someone to deal Blalock to, and maybe even Jones.

The only problem with that is that he clogs up a 40 spot all winter. From a service time standpoint, if they are going to Andrus him, they might as well call him up this season. But the 40 figures prominently here. And I think that with Ramirez, Borbon and Boggs they can easily fill for Blalock and Jones later on.

Yep
The 40 is going to play a huge role over the next 18 months. As Lucas pointed out in one of his great spreadsheets a couple months back the Rangers have alot of intriguing decisions to make in regards to rule 5 and stuff over the next year and a half. Adding a guy like Smoak earlier than needed could mean losing a nice prospect for nothing.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
