I'm really anxious

cause the Rangers are really close to being good but not yet there. When Detroit and TB had success, their young pitchers already had exposure to the Majors. Next year is our year my friends, next year.

it's funny you mention Detroit

i had forgotten how much everyone wanted to emulate their success a few years back. what a train wreck that team has become.

He's got a pretty good arm

I think Young will be okay defensively. He’ll need some time to learn the position of course.

by Black Francis on Apr 4, 2009 1:37 PM CDT up reply actions

yep to that, too

The CW is that his learning the position quickly and successfully is a no-brainer.
I maintain some reservations about that.

by shroomer on Apr 4, 2009 1:38 PM CDT up reply actions

i have the same sentiments

that one ball that was slowly hit, should have been an out, but he was playing in the outfield. Tag and Josh were explaining that with his arm, he can play deep. That just sounds like an excuse that he is playing too far back. Third basemen usually don’t have bad arms, and if you are a good 3B you don’t play in the outfield grass.

Bring on April 6th!

by FirebatM3 on Apr 4, 2009 2:33 PM CDT up reply actions

And while Crisp is a decent addition

the fact that 1) Hillman will bat him leadoff and 2) that there wasn’t much of a difference between Crisp’s performance and some defensive ace like Mitch Maier makes the surrendering of a good, cheap pen arm for crisp really puzzling.

by FirebatM3 on Apr 4, 2009 2:35 PM CDT up reply actions

Let's look at the facts.

Dayton Moore has a history of putting together solid bullpens. And dropping two relievers, who are pracitically a dime a dozen, for some pop and some speed isn’t a terrible gamble.

Also it should be noted that Kila Kaaihue isn’t exactly some stud prospect. He’s a little old, had a horrible Winter League, knows how to work a count and can definitely get on base more than Jacobs, but he won’t hit for the same power.

Right now, Jose Guillen is the only power source in the Royals line-up.

by oc on Apr 4, 2009 2:36 PM CDT up reply actions

The question is

what is the upside of a club with Mike Jacobs vs. Kila Kaaihue? Will the difference between the two have them surpass the Twins, White Sox or Indians? Or even the Tigers?

Furthermore, the Royals lineup misses more than power. Right now, the only source of OBP for the Royals are David DeJesus and Alex Gordon – both of which are very hit and miss. Jacobs brings power, but he hasn’t hit more than 20 except for last year, so you’re paying a premium for a peak year. And Kaaihue’s age is more reason to have him hit right now, so you know what you have. Either way, it seems to me that the royals moved horizontally this winter.

by FirebatM3 on Apr 4, 2009 2:41 PM CDT up reply actions

For what its worth, I believe the move for Jacobs was a stepping stone in getting Greinke to extend.

The Royals had to shake things up this off-season. They really didn’t have much of a choice. They’re pretty much stuck with Guillen, so complimenting him with Jacobs over an experiment like Kila isn’t really ‘paying a premium’ if all it took was a reliever.

The Central is pretty shitty this year.

I think the Twins are the team to beat, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Royals finish second or in a tight race for third with the Indians. They’re not going to be terrible this year.

Let’s not forget that they have some young players that have really been humbled but still have a lot of potential (your Gordons, Hochevars, and Butlers)

by oc on Apr 4, 2009 2:51 PM CDT up reply actions

If that's the case

it makes a lot more sense, but really trading relievers in midseason is probably a lot more valuable than trading them in the offseason.

by FirebatM3 on Apr 4, 2009 2:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Well

They really shored up their bullpen, for whatever that’s worth. Mainly though, they’ve finally got some good young arms to be excited about in the farm system, although their position player depth ain’t much beyond Hosmer and Moose.

by studcrackers on Apr 4, 2009 2:23 PM CDT up reply actions

No they haven't

Ramon Ramirez and Leo Nunez were pretty good last year, and they had Joakim Soria last year. Their bullpen has always been pretty good, it’s just that Trey Hillman can’t figure out that Jimmy Gobble can’t get out righties, their japanese players sucked, and that Joel Peralta should not be facing RH power hitters.

Their “arms” on the farm are AA or below with guys like Cortes and rosa having their share of moles. Their best guys aren’t even out of rookie ball yet (Montgomery and Melville).

by FirebatM3 on Apr 4, 2009 2:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Well, yeah

I suppose you could say they simply rebuilt the bullpen after they destroyed it. Hillman seems to be a horrible manager – as bad as Ron, it seems.

Re: the farm system though, it’s worth noting that almost all of our promising arms (aside from Feliz and Dutch) are AA or below as well…

She was a grand old lady...

by LSJ on Apr 4, 2009 2:29 PM CDT up reply actions

But they're out of rookie ball

Main, Beavan and Gomez will be @ A+, Kiker will be at AA, the fact of the matter is that they lack guys like Feliz and Holland.

To top it off, what position depth they do have are straight out of HS with Moustakas and Hosmer.

And Hillman is absolutely a worse manager than Ron Washington.

by FirebatM3 on Apr 4, 2009 2:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Well, yeah, Hillman is much worse when you factor in player relations

But when it comes to the managing part I don’t think you can get much worse than Ron.

Home from the game

First, it was a lot warmer than we thought it was going to be, so I’m already nursing my first sunburn of the season, even though I put on sunscreen :(

The thing that really stood out for me was that people were actually booing Andrus when he made that error. I was pretty upset about that, but I guess these are the same people who think FOTF should win a GG every year.

Sadly, probably 80-90% of people who go to ballgames are retarded jackholes when it comes to baseball knowledge

Even worse is the fact that they’re the ones the Randy Galloways of the world pander to.

it is really sad

the knowledgeable baseball fan that goes to TBiA is a very low percentage. That is one reason I really enjoy visiting parks like St. Louis and their fans.

every town loves a winner

but this is mainly in regards to the retards that were booing Andrus after the drop. Although, I don’t condone the error. It looked strange the way he played it. I think the MY homerism effect is already in full swing. The general fan doesn’t understand how to build a team or what it takes to win.

and, this town loves a winner so much, that when the Yankees or Red Sox come into town, there are more visiting fans than home fans.

Good points

Andrus booting a play doesn’t deserve boos (but boo birds exist). Young doesn’t merit fetishism, but those who think everyone who appreciates him and not knowledgeable baseball fans are equally off the mark. Nothing worse than bringing MY affection up as a measure of stupidity.

A fanbase, as a greater whole, generally cares when it's team is involved.

The last decade of Ranger baseball has become so predictably bad that it has caused a lot of spite, anger and betrayal within the greater DFW community and has alienated enough to leave us with the casual ‘idiot’ fanbase that so many hear whine about.

The media isn’t going to give this team any favors.

I mean, I guess I wasn’t as shocked as you were about their reaction… but the answer seems pretty logical… when the times are good, people will take an interest and want to know more about the team and care about the team…

The DFW sporting public, media included, have just become so desensitized with the losing that they don’t want to hear about the future. They just want to pick on the now.

by oc on Apr 4, 2009 7:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Also, if you want to stir up interest, you can do your part and phone into the radio shows that are broadcasting to the masses.

I called Norm’s show last week and asked him what he thought about the possibility of creating a bidding war with the Yankees and the Red Sox over Saltalamacchia

To my surprise, Norm was educated on how Jesus Montero probably won’t stick at catcher, but honestly believed that Posada will be able to cut it as a catcher for another year.

That terd Sean Bass thought there was just no way we were going to get Phil Hughes.

And Bascik made a pretty weak statement that I can’t remember.

All you have to do is beat these idiots at their game and snap, the Rangers look better.

I tried to call in once, but didn't get through

I think they were looking for anti-JD talk at the time.

And, i agree with your points above, winning does breed a little more fanbase and may increase general knowledge. I understand the media here really doesn’t know anything about the rangers and what they do know is based on what is on the field now, and many of the fans only know what they hear on these stations and winning is the most important thing to them. The rangers haven’t won anything in their history, and it does get frustrating.

Bring on April 6th!

Was at the game today

Really like all of the new boards. My one quibble would be that the square they used on the left field fence for videos is too small. They need to use most of the board for replays I think.

Really like the look of the brick. I was behind the plate so I couldn’t get a full view but what I saw looked good.

It’s interesting to see the balls bounce of the brick, especially with how close it is. A couple passed balls bounced right back to the ump’s area. I think that’s going to make for some interesting passed ball scenarios with runners on third.

Oh, and Andrus didn’t just drop that ball as Evan said in his recap. He clearly either lost it in the sun or the wind messed him up. It was an awkward play, no doubt, but it wasn’t some random bone headed drop.

by jthig32 on Apr 4, 2009 7:59 PM CDT reply actions

yep

That was what irritated me the most about people booing – it’s not like others have lost balls in the sun, and I certainly don’t remember anyone else getting booed for it.

One thing

why isn’t there yellow lines on top of the fences? It looks weird with out them.
