Record and follow? Or record and wait?
So the past Ranger seasons I have been in college with a flexible schedule to catch most every game live. Now having graduated I go into this season for the first time having a full time job. I also work the hours of 1pm-11pm. So most Monday-Thursday games I will be having to record and watch after work.
So the question is, when you guys DVR/Tivo/Record a game. Do you follow the score at work live, or do you avoid all possible information about the game in an attempt to view as if it were "live" when you get back home, to keep some suspense in a previously recorded game?

Personally
It depends how much time I have. If I have time to sit down and watch the whole thing start to finish then I try and not have any info on it beforehand.
If I don’t have time to watch all of it I will usually keep track and then fast forward to the important spots.

When you DVR, or Tivo
You can atleast skip through the commercials.

I can rarely resist checking on the score
constantly.
and then just watching the best parts on the recording.
the preceding post was a great success.

Avoid and watch later...
which is probably a lot easier for me than most of you guys in and around Arlington. I don’t hear anything about the game in Salt Lake and I avoid LSB while the game is on and ’til after I watch it.
The last couple years I have just recorded the games and watched them after the wife and daughter are in bed.

If given the option...
…I’ll wait for thirty minutes before watching, just so I can skip through the commercials for most of the game and catch up.
In a related note, has anyone tried out the MLB iPhone App? I’m extremely tempted to fork out the $10.

I have it
right now it’s pretty much like last years, but once the regular season starts it’s supposed to be sweet with the home/away audio. Will be perfect for listening at the game.

Tivo
I never watch it any other way. The 45-60 minutes you save is invaluable.
I’d also recommend not spending much time here at LSB, either, as spoilers are imminent. And i’m probably not telling you sumpin you don’t already know, but if you are watching on FSSW rather than 700 channels, be sure and record the next hr or so that comes after. Nothing sucks worse than investing 2-3 hours of your precious free time, and then the game goes to extra innings…without you.
This must be killing you. Now, when you want to scream DFA HIS ASS in the GDT, you’ll be all discombobulated and such.

Congratulations Salts on the new job!
You KNOW you won’t be able to hold off knowing the final score until the re-run, at least I wouldn’t be able to.

My approach.
This represents a huge conundrum for me. It’s so hard (1) to improvise a news blackout until you finally sit down at home and watch the game…I have to listen to WRR-FM classical music on the way home from work to keep from going crazy, and (2) to resist the temptation to listen to the game. I can already feel myself being persuaded to jettison the ruse and just turn on the radio.

i usually DVR it and watch it while its still in progress
and stay about 30 minutes behind, so i can FF through commercials.
the times when i do have it recorded the whole way before i watch i generally like to avoid all information about the game. it just adds to the excitement.

I try to do that too
In fact if I have nothing else to do I’ll often start watching something else I’ve recorded about game time so I’ll have some time built up on the DVR.

Personally, I have a rule against watching pre-recorded sports of any kind.
If I miss it, I miss it. But there’s no sense in trying to avoid looking at the box score, and once you’ve looked at the box score there’s no reason to sit through the game.

And what is the motivation/reasoning behind this rule?

See what Jake said below.

OK, to quote Jake
the whole rush of watching sports is not knowing what is going to happen and feeling like you rooting for the team is going to somehow affect the outcome of the game…
once its already happened then its just like basically watching highlights, the suspense is gone.
So, there is some invisible force that mindmelds you into demoralizing hopelessness, knowing that even though YOU have no more idea of the outcome than your average Joe watching it live, somewhere, average Joe is having a better time b/c it isn’t ignorance that is the ultimate bliss, but ignorance + real time?
What if you were watching a game, really getting into it, and then you discovered it was on tape delay? Would that ruin it for you?
And, doesn’t this rule kind of really screw you over when it comes to your sports enjoyment? Because, box scores and highlights pale pretty bombastically when it comes to the real thing, the actual game, don’t you think? And I can’t imagine how anyone would have the type of schedule where they could almost always catch a game when they wanted to, so that this would be a non-issue.
I dunno. Obviously, it makes no diff to me. I just find this rationale kind of puzzling.

Well, the thing is I can never keep myself from looking at a box score if I miss a game
If I know it’s already been played, I always wind up looking at the outcome. Which totally spoils any intent I might’ve had to watch the game, knowing already how it ends.
I mean, there are certain exceptions, like watching a historic no-no or something being replayed, or watching some random sporting even (like an ARCA race on the speed channel or something) that you have no previous knowledge of. But when it comes to baseball games, I simply cannot resist the urge to spoil it for myself.

OK, that makes more sense
But that wasn’t what Jake said.
And you really can’t avoid the sports internets for a few hours now and then?
Heh. I thought I was a fan.

Why
in the hell do the Rangers have an off day on Tuesday?
I had a secret meeting in the basement of my brain.

Weather day.
About 60% of teams have Tuesday off, in case of crappy weather.
