Travis Metcalf designated for assignment
To make room for the 6th non-roster player on the 40 man roster, Travis Metcalf has been designated for assignment, along with Eric Hurley and Joaquin Benoit going to the 60 day d.l. (as expected).
Not surprising news vis-a-vis Metcalf, who seemed the obvious choice to drop, given the plethora of utility infielders and the fact that Michael Young is going to be at third base for quite a while going forward.
Metcalf getting DFA'd, rather than simply put on waivers (as Kason Gabbard and Joe Koshansky were), suggests that the Rangers think Metcalf may get claimed, and are possibly trying to work out a trade.
Or maybe not.

The 40 man is set. Less than 24 hours till first pitch. It's almost here.
Wes Littleton cleared waivers and is with the Brewers AAA affiliate. With the uncertainty of the bullpen, I would’ve liked to have him back.

3B
If Metcalf’s out of the system, Young’s backup becomes Blalock (if he’s healthy enough) and Duran?
I can’t imagine Metcalf getting claimed, but yeah.

I'd imagine they'd start Davis at third before they do Blalock.

Which brings up...Blalock at 1B.

That's where you'd rather have him play, right?
by oc on Apr 5, 2009 3:35 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
No
If Blalock can’t play 3B they’re not trusting him to field the ball at all. So I think it’s probably Duran at 3B in that case.
Or maybe they do slide Davis over and Smoak comes faster than anyone predicted. I imagine he’s up to the task, actually.
I’m not sure Blalock’s played his last game of D, unless his bat proves out in a consistently healthy 2009 and he signs with an NL team for next year.

I have to imagine it's easier on Blalock's arm to play first. I seriously doubt Blalock won't put on a glove this year.
by oc on Apr 5, 2009 3:42 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah...
Blalock is sliding away from 3B mainly due to the shoulder problems from all reports. Hence why he’s at 1B where he doesn’t have to make that cross diamond throw.

have there been any studies on the effects of TOS long term?

I doubt anyone would have claimed here before ST
And I dont think a .500 something ops in ST is going to change that.

It is almost as annoying...
…as the ranting early in the game about how coaches shouldn’t listen to the team doctors, and shouldn’t limit players minutes, and should just ask the player if he can go or not, and if the player says yes, play him.

went really really far back for that one. You realize that was from last year – and comments about making the playoffs in 2008 (as well as 2009), right?
I bet there were multiple times Adam said the mavs weren’t making the playoffs this year

Good hell...
I don’t think I can watch the game tonight. Steve Phillips AND Joe Morgan are calling the game.
At least before they had John Miller to make up for Morgan. Those two guys together are bound to reach a new realm of sucktitude. I’m sure I’ll watch the first 30 min before either muting it or watching something else.

I see a handful of pitchers
…when you look at it as, say, a 2-3 month proposition. If a guy like Arias or Golson has a horrible season he could be in there, but I wouldn’t bet on it. The most expendable now (again, over the course of the first few months, not this very moment) seems like one of Eyre, Mendoza, Bannister, Jennings, Guardado and Nippert. And it will just depend on how the season goes as far as how that line forms.
There are still some expendable spots, but there are also guys on the horizon who will need them.
by Brett Perryman on Apr 5, 2009 7:43 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Arias
He’s out of options after the season, as well, which is a factor.
