Cubs release Chad Gaudin

The Chicago Cubs have released Chad Gaudin, who came over to Chicago in the Rich Harden trade last year.

He's 26, right-handed, was a decent starter for the A's in 2007, and had a 4.14 FIP splitting between the Cubs and A's last year.

I'm sitting here trying to figure out why the Rangers would keep Warner Madrigal in the bullpen instead of Gaudin, and whether it would be worth dropping someone (probably Luis Mendoza) from the 40 man roster in order to option Madrigal and sign Gaudin.

Agreed

I’d really like to see Warner start the year at AAA. We need all the RH relief help we can get.

Concur...

send Madrigal to AAA and DFA Mendoza.

Gaudin could be a good arm out of the ’pen and spot start if needed.

JD should be all over this, I hope.

Is Gaudin healthy?

Not sure he was the worst RHRP alternative in the Cubs pen. If he’s healthy, yep.

What's wrong with Madrigal?

seems like they both where about the same last year…

and maddog is better against RHPs…

Cubs need some help in the BP too, they musta saw something to release him just like that…

Madrigal...

was rushed and could use some seasoning at OKC imo.

Look at the year Gaudin had in ‘07 for Oakland. We would love Millwood or Padilla to do that this year. I’m not saying he will do that again, but he’s a solid pitcher who would no doubt be an upgrade for the Rangers bullpen.

the preceding post was a great success.

by DSheppard on Apr 5, 2009 7:09 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

i got nothing

i guess i always just thought Gaudin was vastly overrated when he was with oakland. i don’t like that he has a 3:2 K:BB ratio. Like I said below, he’s not a K guy, and he’s not a GB guy. He was awful with the Cubs last year and awful again this ST. I just don’t like the feel of it. Perhaps Mendoza slides through waivers, and if that’s the case, I guess I could get excited about it.

I do agree whole heartedly that Madrigal needs more time in the minors to reach his potential.

Rotoworld: Chad Gaudin-R- Cubs Mar. 29 - 8:02 pm et
Chad Gaudin gave up three runs in two innings out of the pen on Sunday, taking his spring ERA up to 10.54.
We agreed with the decision at the time, but if the Cubs had it to do all over again, they surely would have non-tendered Gaudin rather than re-sign him for $2 million back in December. They might end up placing him on waivers and seeing if some other team will pick up his salary. He hasn’t been the same pitcher since last year’s back problems.

Things that make you go HMMMMM…

you are blacked out from your area

Extra Innings would be blacked out as well

If you get FSSW, I believe that all the games are shown on the alternate feeds by Direct TV and Dish Network.

I live in Houston, and have Direct TV, and as a result, I get just about every game, either on the main feed or the alternate feed. Even the syndicated games that aren’t normally shown on FSSW, Direct and Dish put on the alternate FSSW feed.

I'm telling you guys...

the Phillies may be in trouble.

3/5 of their rotation is made up of Myers (who has always been inconsistent), Moyer (age eventually has to catch up to him), and the great Ho. Add to that the whole Hamels and his velocity being down thing and the Phillies could have some serious pitching issues.

They had a pretty dumb off season.

Way overpaid for Ibanez, then resigned Moyer because of… I don’t know, love, or something

And Hamels is a pretty good implosion bet, imo.I do NOT see him making it through this season healthy or effective.

Young, highly-touted starters should start, IMO

Only exceptions are if the bullpen is the only way you have to get them innings in Sept or if you need them to be a power arm in the playoffs, like David Price. But this “lets break a guy in through the bullpen” thing doesn’t seem to work, at least not for Morrow and Joba.

by lonestarJon on Apr 5, 2009 9:49 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

He didn't really bounce in and out.

There was plenty of discussion back and forth, but as far as actual player development.. stater in the minors, reliever for a little less than a year in the majors and then transitioned slowly to a starter. They didnt put him back and forth or anything.

I don’t see that as a particularly bad way to limit some innings and give mlb exposure with a greater chance of success.

I don’t really want them to do it with feliz, but I wouldn’t get too mad about it unless they actually did move him in and out.

the preceding post was a great success.

by DSheppard on Apr 5, 2009 9:53 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Or Billingsley, or Liriano, or Johan, or Pedro Martinez... And wtf is your deal with Joba? Are you dim? The guy's one the best young starters in the majors.

I’d take 100 innings of 10.5 k/9, 2.65 fip baseball from a 23 year old in only his second year of pro ball every single time.

Seriously, this idea that Joba is somehow a failure is dumb and the fact that you won’t drop it is confusing.

And before you go ahead and say that breaking a guy like Morrow in out of the ‘pen ruined him as a starter (and you have absolutely zero proof that that is the case, btw… you have no idea what sort of ancillary factors went into that decision this Spring), go ahead and admit that choosing to not break a guy like Phil Hughes or Clay Buchholz in via the ’pen is what “ruined” them, because there’s exactly as much proof of that as there is of what your saying.

The truth is that breaking a guy in via the ’pen is a case-by-case decision.

Saying flatly that it just shouldn’t be done is specious and lazy.

With certain players in certain situations, breaking in via the ’pen is probably the most prudent course of action.

Other times, breaking in a certain player via the rotation is probably the most prudent course of action.

Saying one way is always right or wrong is dumb.

last night the conservative approach to pitch counts

nearly cost Atlanta. I never get it when a starting pitcher is completely rolling throwing 8 innings of 2 hit ball, and less than 100 pitches. Give the guy a shot at pitching a complete game shutout. How many times do you see when a pitcher is dominating, and a manager puts in a bullpen guy, and that guy immediately gets hit. I just think it is ridiculous.
