question

Why are runs scored on a wild pitch earned runs?

Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year

by RangerMad on Apr 6, 2009 3:38 PM CDT reply actions

By that logic

fielding errors by the pitcher should be earned, too.

by NorCalRangersFan on Apr 6, 2009 3:40 PM CDT up reply actions

well

with fielding errors, the pitcher didn’t cause the run because of his pitching, he caused it becuase of his fielding

by iorange555 on Apr 6, 2009 3:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Why the hell wouldn't that be?

Doesn’t the pitcher throw the wild pitch? Then it’s an earned run.

If I had to guess

I’d say that (a) it’s the pitcher’s fault; (b) unlike an error, the ball is not in play; and © it’s a pitching error (like a balk) and not a fielding error…IIRC balks count toward ER’s

8 Run Save

So, is the smart thing to pitch your setup and closer in the 8/9 innings on opening day so you get them in the game, get them and the team the feel of things for typical games, and to lock up that first important win, etc.

Or should you hold them out for tomorrow and future games that are likely to be more competitive.

I’m not sure what the answer is, and I’m not certainly complaining. I’m happy with the way it turned out, and I do think giving up 5 runs in the 8/9 would have put a damper on things.

I’m just crious what the “right” answer is, if there even remotely is one.

Day off

I missed the day off tomorrow. I’m curious about the hypothetical. I don’t have a problem with the way it played out, even if no day off.

by gr7070 on Apr 6, 2009 4:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Pointless stat of the day

To match last year’s performance the Rangers now have to score 5.54 runs per game and allow 6 runs a game.
