Josey Wales: An animated movie
I have created an animated movie, entitled Josey Wales.
The gentleman on the left in the sports jersey who speaks in a robotic British accent is Josey. I feel like the actor did a wonderful job capturing the "je ne sais quoi" that is quintessential Josey. The actor on the right is playing an amalgam of "normal" LSB posters, and is a real "up and comer." I think he's got a future in the movie business, which I call "The Show."
Anyway, here's the movie, tell me what you think!

There is nothing better...
…than hearing a robotic-voiced benmor explain in detail his sophisticated plan to, uh, soil Josey’s mouth.

I love that site.
Well, I don’t want Josey to go away. His early posts on Newberg were epic. He’s been sidetracked by the idea that Hicks-is-to-cheap to be a good owner, which has clouded his conclusions, but he makes some astute observations.
Anyway, pretty funny stuff.

Nobody's telling Josey to go away.
I was just putting a Josey thread in an animated context.

Very, very funny benmor
I do believe your character is flammable and plays for the other team / hits from the other side of the plate, if you know what I mean.
Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
I did laugh and no longer believe you are the worthless little brother capable of nothing.

I congratulated benmor on creating something
that’s pretty funny (bordering on LSB genius given the limitations involved) but the character he created for himself is uh, shall we say revelatory – and I’ve never been big on the theory of coincidence.
Who else in here has had their own movie created by somebody from LSB?
THAT, my fellow Ranger fans is an aura and presence backed up with substance that Elvis Andrus would acknowledge and appreciate.

btw, just saying “not that there’s anything wrong with that,” does not give you license to make homophobic statements.
while your being a jackass is annoying, your homophobia is pretty disgusting.

If the character is blatantly effeminate
(and he is) are we supposed to ignore it?
I’ve had a person in my extended family who was gay and he was a great, great guy (died of AIDS in the 90’s) so don’t point the homophobia fickle foam finger of fate at moi. I have no problems whatsoever with that part of society.
I just found it interesting that benmor saw himself that way and thought it was more than a little revelatory.

I said “it doesn’t prove anything” and you completely ignored it.
What is the implication of it being revelatory? What is it revealing that is so bad? What if he’s completely gay? So what? Unless you think that is some sort of knock on him, there is no reason that it is “interesting” or relevant at all.

By saying that I have no problems with
that part of society?
I don’t know how to best describe my feelings towards gays other than the fact I accept them and have no negative feelings towards them.
Having somebody in your extended family who is gay (and shunned by others in the family although he was a great, great guy) will do that.
I also work with somebody who is a blatant leftwing uber liberal lesbian but that doesn’t matter to me because she’s a great person
I seem to have really touched a nerve with you on this subject but I promise, I have no problems whatsoever with the gay but….benmor’s portrayal of himself was obviously effeminate.

It's just difficult to believe you
when you use homosexuality as a derogatory descriptor for someone in this community.
If you believe that sexual preference isn’t an indication of the value a person has, and truly cared about those people, then you wouldn’t use homosexuality like that.
by jwiscarson on Apr 7, 2009 1:26 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
How was I derogatory?
Curious, do you believe the “gay/not gay” segments on BAD Radio are funny or derogatory? Personally, I think those bits are funny so what does that make me?
Given the rigorous passion with which the cavalry is coming after me on this issue, I must have stumbled onto something that has traction.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."

Well, first off...
you immediately commented about perceived homosexuality of a text-to-speech character which Ben himself said was an amalgam of the LSB community as a whole and projected this onto him. Not only is it a stretch, but it’s a completely unnecessary comment.
I think ab03’s comment above is accurate. Do you think your gay friends would be upset with you after the comments you made in this thread?
Although I’ve listened to Gay/Not Gay on BaD radio before, I don’t anymore because I think segments like that simply reinforce the idea that homosexuals are second class citizens, and that being gay makes you less of a man/less of a woman.
by jwiscarson on Apr 7, 2009 1:41 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't really care if my gay friends were upset
with those comments. I wasn’t bashing anybody or any part of society.
Is Barney Frank effeminate? Absolutely, that man is en fuego but is it homophobic to make that observation?
If so, why?
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
by Josey Wales on Apr 7, 2009 1:52 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
It's the manner in which you made the comment
that makes it homophobic.
When a group of people are treated as less than human by society, and you make a comment that exploits this fact to deflect attention away from yourself, it comes across thusly:
“Nevermind that I don’t make sense sometimes, Ben is GAY!”
This isn’t ha-ha-funny, or strange funny. It’s derogatory, and it’s completely different from noting that someone has effeminate mannerisms. If you can’t draw this distinction, I seriously suggest therapy (and I’m not trying to be mean when I say that).
Even if you didn’t mean it that way, surely you can see that at least three people in this thread have interpreted it that way. Rather than blaming us, it might be worthwhile for you to be introspective and try to figure out if you have a subconscious problem you’ve been ignoring. Again, therapy could be of great assistance.

I've also been accused of being racist
because I rip Ron Washington for being eternally dimwitted yet I have also gone on and on about what smart baseball players Milton Bradley & Brandon Boggs are.
I also believe Joe Morgan was the greatest and smartest players (who did not use steroids) I have seen in my lifetime yet I also believe that Jim Cleamons was one of the most incompetent NBA coaches I have ever seen in my life. Racist? I don’t think so.
So in conclusion, I have no problem with the gay but benmor’s character was unmistakably effeminate.
Was he gay?

you didn't recognize an effiminate character
if you had done that, it would have been fine.
what you did was call it revelatory (liek 50 times). So what is the implication of that? That it reveals that ben is effminate. What is the implication of that? You tell me (which you still haven’t yet). You have only said, draw your own conclusions.
Well, ben is effiminate. There’s nothing wrong with being effiminate, is there? Josey thinks so – thinks it is worthy of being made fun of.
This isn’t hard to parse through.

I think that’s a little different. This whole “he’s gay” thing isn’t usually meant literally that the person is gay, hence bad. Here, Josey’s direct implication was that Ben was gay (likes men, is effiminate) and that is bad.
Still, using gay in a pejorative sense is still wrong. I’d be embarassed about doing it in front of gay people. That’s probably a good indicator that you’re doing something wrong

Ummmm....
I don’t think that gay people have a problem with being gay. If a character in anything seems to be effiminate, it’s not cast in stone that they ARE gay, but there is always a reason for that character to be portrayed in that manner.
I didn’t think of Josey’s comment as anything more than a possible jab at benmor….as people do, when they banter back and forth.
As far as the homosexual people I know go, they are more than happy when a character in anything is portrayed as gay. At times, it seems to signal progress in societal acceptance, and not a taboo “thing”. Shit, they friggin’ were all over the purple Teletubbie when it was rumored that that character might have homosexual tendencies.
In my opinion, this was a ridiculous exercise in over-exaggerating benign commentary about a video specifically made to poke fun at another member of this forum.
My question is, based on the fact that I don’t know if Josey is British or if benmor is effeminate, how in the hell are we supposed to know (via comments on a blog) if they are accurate depictions of the people the characters are based on.
I didn’t think twice about it, but since ab03 decided to post “Well, ben is effeminate.”, I guess that might stick in my mind as accurate, even though I have no idea if it is accurate or not.
Honestly, I couldn’t give a rat’s ass, but what reason could ab03 have for putting that out there? If true, would ben have any reason to want that put out there for everyone to read? If not true, would ben have any reason for wanting ab03 saying that about him?
In my opinion, this is serious over-reaction and unneccessary. It smacks of grasping at a comment and trying to use it to rally against the author. If it was truly offensive, then bash away. But if creating an intentional furor just to get others to dislike someone you don’t like by making a big deal out of nothing is the goal, then shame on those doing it.
Chaim Witz is an equal opportunity basher, and definitely finds humor in stereotypes generated by society, however, does not condone criticizing or making fun of things people cannot help or change about themselves.
In my opinion, the negative reaction and commentary heaped onto Josey was over the top and somewhat disingenuous.

Ben
He’s balding.
He has a goatee that is almost never groomed, and oftentimes has a two-toned beard thing going, since he’ll go a week or two without shaving.
My wife claims never to have seen him where he wasn’t wearing a shirt that had stains on it.
I wouldn’t go so far as to say he’s particularly masculine, but he’s definitely not effeminate.

I should point out...
that for the “script,” I just copied almost verbatim a couple of your threads. So, while the very end of the script is an exchange you and I had, the first half is you and jkolar, and I think one other person. So the other character isn’t supposed to represent “me,” per se, but just a generic LSB poster, which is why I said in the original post that it’s an amalgam. It’s a Josey’s Greatest Hits sort of thing. That’s why saying the character is indicative of my masculinity or lack thereof is a little off base.
However, the fact that this thread went off the rails is too perfect. I’m going to go ahead and claim that I knew it was going to happen and that it was part of my artistic vision.
Now, I would like to thank the Academy…

Upon further review we can conclusively say...
-benmor made a great flick
- Not only do I have extensive knowledge about all things Great Game (especially as it pertains to the Rangers) but I also have enough – charisma, aura, look in the eye, sense of belonging (choose the garden variety bullshit descriptions for Elvis Andrus) to have a movie made in my honor not to mention an obvious sense of humor.
- We know Adam is an excellent big brother.
- benmor’s masculinity is in dispute. Adam says not effeminate, ab03 says effeminate. I have no point of reference but will believe Adam’s take because, well, ab03’s judgment is beyond questionable.
- ab03 came off looking worse than anybody and further cemented the long held notion that indeed, he is an asshole of the highest order. Congrats.
- We also know jasonh still doesn’t know a freaking thing about fantasy baseball and really hates it when somebody teases him about it. Oh and jason, I never notice when you post because you’re not funny, intelligent or memorable. Like dog crap in a park, you’re just there.
Without a doubt, this thread is an instant classic – great job, benmor!!
