I have two AL-only fantasy teams. They both have Jarrod Saltalamacchia. This is going to end well. Saltalamacchia, who has something to prove from the right side of the plate, had an opposite-field single off of Lee in the second inning, then later turned around and hit a long ball off of Jensen Lewis. Depending on how much time Joe Mauer misses, Saltalamacchia could start the All-Star Game for the American League.

Ummmm....

Yeah. I’m not sure I’m buying into the Salty kool-aid just yet. His stench from last year is still on my clothes and doesn’t seem to come out in the wash easily.

Everyone just settle down. If anyone has a shot to call pitches from behind the plate and wearing a Rangers uniform, it’s going to be Teagarden. Or hell, Max Ramirez. Has everyone forgot how abysmal Salty was at the plate last year??

by River Fenix on Apr 8, 2009 2:19 PM CDT up reply actions

He wasn't really as "abysmal" as it seemed

He still managed a .353 OBP and he hit .311/.426/.451 (876 OPS) against right-handed pitching. He also hit .312/.379/.416 (795 OPS) from July 1st on. The only “abysmal” part of his year at the plate last year was his .443 OPS against lefties, which skewed his overall line.

There really aren’t any overly good catchers in the AL though, so Salty’s got a shot.

That’s a pretty bold prediction. I love Salty, but Mauer is the catching sweetheart of the league. It would take a lot to unseat him.

This is somewhat confusing...
I’m as bearish on Cliff Lee as anyone you’ll find, but then again, I would have said that in June of last year as well. Lee will regress to an ERA in the vicinity of 4.00 this year, likely because his walks and BABIP tick back up. He won’t be as bad as he was yesterday, when the Rangers lit him up for seven runs in five innings, but I’d be surprised if he picked up even a single Cy vote this season.

The Rangers are going to do this to a lot of good pitchers, especially lefties.

I would have thought the opposite.

Feliz and Andrus

Personally, I disagree with everything he said.

The Rangers had a hole at third base bigger than the one in Travis Metcalf’s swing. They had the opportunity to fill it over the winter and whiffed. Rather than adding a stopgap, or trying to ignore the problem they dealt with it. Moving Young to third, immediately improves the defense we got at third. For that matter, its a better offensive solution (even though Young won’t hit that much) than going with Metcalf and Vizquel and maybe putting Davis or Blalock back at third and getting one of them hurt. Arias can barely play short with his arm, so third is “right out”. The question then becomes, who do you play at short since you’ve moved Young. Well, I guess the question is, who’s the best fielder we have at short? Answer: Elvis Andrus. Who’s the best hitter we have at short? Amazingly, the answer is still Elvis Andrus.

Name Projection
Elvis .248/.301/.334
Vizquel .224/.283/.278
Arias .259/.294/.373
Duran .264/.316/.434

Ok, maybe that’s an overstatement. Duran will probably outhit Elvis. But Duran isn’t going to play short everyday. And maybe Arias outslugs Elvis. maybe.

His arguments about Feliz ignore everything which is good about him. We know he has command issues, but he can sort them out in AAA as easily as AA, and he did post a 2.98 ERA and allowed only 34 hits in 45.3 innings at AA DESPITE a .306 BABIP, oh, and yeah. one home run allowed.

In his 3 year minor league career, he’s pitched 198 innings. He’s allowed 5 home runs in that span.
For comparison: Edinson Volquez allowed 38 homes in his 4 year, 550 inning minor league career, and 28 more in his four seasons and 276 innings in the majors. John Danks allowed 39 homers in his 4 seasons in the minors over 426.1 innings, and in 2 seasons in the majors, has allowed 43 in 334 innings. Thomas Diamond has allowed 28 homers in his 4 seasons in the minors, covering 379.1 innings. Lastly, Honorary DVD member Eric Hurley has allowed 69 homers in his 5 years in the minors covering some 580.1 innings, but only 5 in the majors, but those 5 have come in only 24 innings.

Feliz strikes out alot of batters, allows very few hits, and extremely few home runs. He walks some people. that can change.

no way A's

Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year

by RangerMad on Apr 7, 2009 10:53 PM CDT up reply actions

definitely

the a’s infield defense is pretty good if chavez is anywhere near his old form though.

if kinsler plays as well as I expect him too the rangers overall defense should be pretty good.. hamilton in CF isn’t bad enough to drag the whole thing down.

the preceding post was a great success.

by DShep on Apr 7, 2009 10:59 PM CDT up reply actions

And unlike the As

who absolutely need their bats in the OF, the Rangers can eventually put Byrd or Borbon in CF and the offense can probably still chug along.

by FirebatM3 on Apr 7, 2009 11:17 PM CDT up reply actions

This year probably not.

Though Hamilton in center will probably make it closer than it should be.

by ab03 on Apr 7, 2009 10:54 PM CDT reply actions

i want the a's to lose all their hype fast

i cant ebleieve how positive the analysis is. yes they helped their lineup, but when you were dead last in 08 a turnaround gets you to “solid” territory, its not like they are great. and the rotation is about as unproven as possible.

but as ive said a few times, since I don’t believe they will be winning 90 games or anything I do want them to win every game against the angels they can.

the preceding post was a great success.

by DShep on Apr 7, 2009 11:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Whoah, how many people have them winning 90 games?!

That’s probably insane.

I think they’re about solid or a little better (and that being good enough to win this division), and I thought I was in the consensus. If 90 wins is being thrown around, though. . .

by philkid3 on Apr 7, 2009 11:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Well I've seem them picked quite a few times to win the division

I guess that may be at 85 games instead of 90, though I think the angels winning less than 88-89 is really really optimistic.

the preceding post was a great success.

by DShep on Apr 7, 2009 11:40 PM CDT up reply actions

Really?

I think the were an 85 second-order win team last year (setting a record for number of flukey wins). They’ve now lost Teixeira and have injuries to their top pitchers. Teams that overperform tend to regress, anyway, and they’ve gotten a little bit older, lost an elite player and have an injured rotation.

I think 88-89 wins would be optimistic from an Angels fan.

by philkid3 on Apr 7, 2009 11:51 PM CDT up reply actions

if they were all out for the year, yeah.

but nothing ive ready suggests they shouldn’t be able to pitch effectively at least by june.

hey, i hope they lose 100, but if their pitching comes back they should be really good from that point forward.. and i can seem them holding it together until then.

the preceding post was a great success.

by DShep on Apr 7, 2009 11:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Even if they weren't out of the year. . .

. . . I probably would be relatively surprised if they hit 88-89. I think they’re only going to cost the team a handful of wins. But I think they’re an 85-86 win team with them, so. . .
