Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

Wednesday morning things

Game 2 of the Rangers' season is tonight, and the Rangers are currently sitting alone in first place in the A.L. West.  Yay!

And watching the end of last night's debacle in Minnesota, I couldn't help by think of Phillipe Aumont.

Vicente Padilla pitches tonight, and Jeff Wilson says Padilla is healthy and ready to show he deserves to be the team's #2 starter.

And...well, that's about it this morning.

things I liked about last night

neither the A’s nor the Angels pitchers looked that great, or had overwhelming stuff. It is early in the season, but Cahill should have been tagged for more runs than 3 (2 earned). He was lucky with 5 hits and 5 walks (only 1 K) in 5 innings of work.

Either way, the Rangers may end up with the most consistent staff, at least until the Angels’ injured pitchers return to action.

Bedard and Felix looked good for the Mariners, but Morrow can’t save their bullpen problems.

C’mon Padilla, your contract season starts now, and you better perform.

My AL West thoughts after 2 days...

And no, this will not be my usual “What the hell does everyone see in the A’s” diatribe.

1. The A’s have a great bullpen. Billy Beane traded triple A fodder to the Cubs for Michael Wuertz, and he looks great. Damn. In fact, the A’s look a lot like most successful Rangers clubs in the past. Lineup that depends on aging veterans hitting for power and a shaky rotation that just needs to hand over the ball with a lead to a great bullpen.

2. The Mariners are the new version of Spahn and Sain and pray for rain. Their revamped OF has already paid dividends, but I still don’t think they have the offense needed to compete. I like their direction, though.

3. The Angels look old. Not quite Astros olde (as in Ye Olde Astros), but old none the less. The Angels two top starters are currently Joe Saunders and Dustin Moseley. As long as that is the case, this is anyone’s division to win. But when/if they get their studs back, they still appear to be the best team in the division. Kendry Morales is better than people give him credit for. He is a drop off from Tex, obviously, but I think he’s a notch above Kotchman.

What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.

They are batting Cust

down at 7 or 8 so far. Not sure how that makes sense. Garciaparra had a great spring, so the A’s are playing him like he’s still in his prime. This will eventually backfire.

a healthy Bedard

by clark on Apr 8, 2009 10:57 AM CDT up reply actions

I think whatever the Angels offense they lost from tex

Morales and Abreu will be able to fill that void. The Angels were still the best team in our division without Tex. Of course, they were carried largely by the arm of Ervin Santana.

I think the A’s bullpen will take a huge hit today when, most likely, Devine will be out for the year. They already placed him on the 60-day DL. Also, Ziegler will not strike guys out like he did last night. He has great movement, but his k/bb is not that great-around a 1to1 ratio. He lives by getting ground balls.

Bring on April 6th!

by NothinG on Apr 8, 2009 10:31 AM CDT up reply actions

Oakland Bullpen

They’ve got plenty of solid arms in that bullpen, plus plenty of guys in their upper minors who can come up and be productive bullpen guys. Devine’s injury does hurt, but it’s a whole lot less devastating than if Francisco got hurt on our squad.

by Andy Seiler on Apr 8, 2009 10:37 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm very intrigued with the A's and Billy Beane

but I wasn’t expecting them to get anything from Chavez.

If he’s 85% of what he used to be, that may put them over the top.

"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."

by Josey Wales on Apr 8, 2009 10:38 AM CDT up reply actions

i think it is too much to ask

3 rookie starters to carry the load on a pitching staff. Even if they are more effective than last night, I don’t think they will be able to make it the entire season. I would expect a late season fade. They will struggle and if they can’t get deep into games. Cahill threw over 100 pitches in 5 innings last night. Their good bullpen will feel the pressure that Rangers bullpens have felt recently of pitching too much.

Bring on April 6th!

OT: Dallas Smoking Ban

Efforts to delay the ban have reportedly been defeated today, as e-mailed to me by the DMN (update on their politics blog shortly, so no link yet), ban to start Friday as planned.

Most of the places its been tried

it really hasn’t killed restaurants and bars like folks thought it would. I’m pretty ambivalent about smoking bans now. I don’t smoke personally, but in general I’d rather have bars and restaurants have the ability to set their own rules.

I generally didn’t go to restaurants that didn’t do a good enough job of segregating smokers from non-smokers though. Nothing ruins a meal more than someone lighting up in the table next to you and blowing smoke in your direction.

Well

Since they are already fairly restricted to certain areas it is nearly impossible to accidentally come across the cigar lounge of a place. But yes, people who don’t smoke them hate cigars.

Smoking

In protesting the smoking ban, did you consider than cigarette smoke harms other people?

May not be the be-all-end-all, but it’s the reason I’m deeply glad smoking’s out of New York bars.

by hightowersmith on Apr 8, 2009 3:57 PM CDT up reply actions

That's the argument that always gets thrown out there

If there was no feasible way to avoid smoking, you would have a point, but there are literally hundreds of non-smoking restaurants in DFW. If you’re worried about your health, go to one of them and speak with your wallet. Demanding a restaurant ban smoking just so you can go there in comfort is like going to Taco Bell and demanding a Big Mac.
In the interest of full disclosure, I don’t smoke. However, smoking is legal and if a business owner wants to cater to that clientèle, that’s their right. No one is forced to walk in those doors to either eat or work. Either ban cigarettes altogether or leave businesses alone. Next they’ll ban drinking and then loud talking.

I am only pro smoking ban for selfish reasons – I hate the way cigarette smoke smells and how it sticks to you and your clothes. Personally, every reason anyone has ever given for a smoking ban being a good thing just goes against my personal governmental philosophy. I think the government has no right to meddle in such a fashion. That said, I’d still vote for a ban were it put to a popular vote. Like I said, selfish!

yeah

it’s the reason I am aboard…after going to NYC a few times, coming out of the bars and not feeling like I had to shower before I went to bed…such a great feeling.

I’ll be glad when the ban hits, but then again, I like an occasional cigar, so I’m all for a “cigar bars and other bars designated for smokers” situation. Although, I’m sure a higher tax rate would be applied to such bars, putting a chokehold on them.

And at the end of the day, I do agree that bars should be able to decide if they ban smoking, or if they segregate smokers, etc. But maybe they need a kick in the pants to get that rolling. Restaurants, it makes total sense to be smoke-free.

Cigar Exception

The establishment has to make 15% of their income from the sale of tobacco to allow smoking of cigars inside. So, places like Javier’s Cigar Bar and other specialty cigar shops will probably be ok. I’m cool with that.
