Adenhart dies in wreck
This is awful.
TMZ has learned Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Nick Adenhart was killed in a felony hit-and-run car accident in Fullerton, California early this morning -- hours after he pitched in a game last night.
Cops say someone driving a minivan blew through a red light, causing the Mitsubishi that Adenhart was riding in to hit a light pole. Three people were killed in the crash, including Nick.
Cops say the person driving the van fled the scene -- but was later caught and charged with felony hit-and-run. The suspect is currently being treated for injuries in a local hospital.

He pitched well
I watched some of the game last night and the later analysis of his outing. He kept getting himself out of jams. They talked about how, at just 22, he showed real poise in the face of adversity. Crazy to think that someone I just saw pitch on TV is now dead.

I think they'll play
Usually you only post-pone games for big tragedies effecting the fans. Sadly, when its a player they’ll do a memorial, moment of silence, numbers on the sleeves and dedicate the season to him.
Sounds like they found the guy that did it, and hopefully he gets what he has coming.

What makes this story worse...
is that upon his draft signing, a torn ACL was found in his physical. The Angels stood him, paid the signing bonus. Adenhart worked his ass off after the surgery to get back to MLB.
by awillis111 on Apr 9, 2009 11:03 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
this probably isn't the time or place to nitpick
but i think the torn ACL was the reason he slipped to them in the 14th round in the first place. But yeah, he did work his ass off and seemed ready to turn a corner and become a big time guy for the next decade. I really can’t believe it. My first thought was to compare this to Len Bias, but this was completely out of Nick’s hands.
It just makes me angry.

There’s a picture of the crash scene… the damage to the car seems a bit weird to me. In the picture, the roof has been cut off, but it looks like the fenders on the left side aren’t beat up like you’d expect them to be in a crash bad enough to be fatal. The only thing I can figure is the minivan hit it on the right side and somehow, the car’s roof is what hit the light pole, then they cut the roof off with the Jaws of Life.
It really makes me think about life a little bit more when people younger than me die.

Rangers Adenhart reaction:
The Rangers were stunned by the death of Los Angeles Angels rookie pitcher Nick Adenhart. There will be a moment of silence before the game. Pitcher Warner Madrigal played with Adenhart in the minors and remembers him being a quiet person. Manager Ron Washington sent his best wishes to Adenhart’s family and the Angels organization. “That’s sad,” Washington said. “All I knew about was his talent. I didn’t know him personally. I just knew about his talent. The kid finally got to be a starter at the major league level.”

My prayers and thoughts
go out to his family, his teammates, and the families of all the victims. What really sucks is knowing that this kid (im only 26 but still he was also just a kid) was probably riding such a euphoric high last night after his very impressive outing. He never got to say goodbye to anyone. I offer this poem to his family:
I think of you often
and make no outward show,
But what it means to lose you,
no one will ever know
You wished no one farewell,
not even said good-bye,
You were gone before I knew it,
and only God knows why.
You are not forgotten
nor will you ever be,
As long as life and memories last,
I will remember thee.
To some you may be forgotten,
to others a part of the past,
But to me who loved you dearly,
your memories will always last.
Nothing can be more beautiful
than the memories I have of you.
To me, you were someone special,
God must have thought so too!
If tears could build a staircase
and memories a lane,
I would walk all the way to Heaven,
and bring you back again.

It's so hard to really figure out how to react.
It’s just so stunning. Yes, it’s sad, but that just doesn’t feel like it rightly encapsulates the issue.

Death Is the Worst Part of Life
I would say that we should all look at our lives, think about what we are thankful for, think about what we love, who we love, and thank God that we are here and able to enjoy a wonderful life. We should all remember to enjoy life, and enjoy love, because every day is precious.
This is our year.

First big league shutout
and then some idiot in a minivan takes a precious life.
RIP Nick and God Bless the Adenhart family and the Angel family. As much as I hate the Angels, I am truly sorry for their loss and at a time like this baseball means nothing.

What a senseless tragedy... his poor family.
I can’t imagine what they must be going through. God’s blessings on them and all affected by this.
Aikman and Bradshaw?
Please. They are in the same league as Trent Dilfer and Jim McMahon as QBs who were taken to the SB by great Defenses and great Running Games.

i hate thinking of parents in this situation
i might be wrong but I think he was an only child. for a parent to see lose their only son when he’s 22 and about to make a living for himself…
I’ve known people who’ve lost their very young kids and they are shells of their former selves. just a really hard thing to bounce back from at all, let alone normalcy

Her face was the first thing I pictured after reading the first report.
I can’t imagine the pain you go through while dealing with something like that. Ugh.
I’m not going to lie and say I’ve never driven drunk. I’ve done it, and it was stupid, and I’m lucky to have not killed anyone or myself. I won’t do it again. I’m curious as to how many of you have done it? To me, it would seem like at least 90% of drivers over the age of 25 have driven drunk at least one time in thier lives. Anyone care to discuss thier own story?

I can’t possibly imagine the pain his family must be feeling now. My prayers go out to them.
Also, as a fan of a baseball team, following the minor leagues and checking their stats ever so often, you almost feel as if certain players were part of your family. And I’m sure that some Angels fans who are as ardent stat-geeks like us must be heartbroken losing someone they’ve followed so closely.
RIP Nick

I think...
Jeff’s take on the incident is pretty good (not surprising, he’s a great writer and I can relate to the way he thinks) http://www.lookoutlanding.com/2009/4/9/829381/on-the-passing-of-nick-adenhart
While it’s weird, in a way, it’s also not-weird. Young males have high mortality rates, in part because they’re full of testosterone and, to a certain extent, professional athletes career choices probably self-select for a certain amount of risk-taking. So when you hear about those football players going 30 miles offshore in a 22 foot boat, and 3 of them dying, or about Dante Stallworth running over some dude, you think, “well, that’s the kind of thing that happens when you give young men hundreds of thousands of dollars.” Probably the reason we don’t hear of more cases like those is because professional athletes are under a lot of scrutiny, and, for their own careers, don’t just go whole hog.
Not to say that Adenhart brought on this tragedy through excessive risk-taking, except to the extent that any of us are taking risks by being out on the road at midnight. But the kid that hit them was their same age. And, I haven’t seen any stories that mention it, but there’s also the not-inconceivable possibility that whoever was driving Adenhart’s car had also imbibed that evening.
Anyway, the hit-and-run driver is apparently a recidivist. As someone who was in a drunk-driving accident and subsequently quit drinking, I’d say take this opportunity to examine your own late-night behavior… I’d say that most people that drink have driven drunk at some time. Take it from me, take it from Adenhart, take it from whomever… don’t do it.
