The Outlaw and Maximus
Josey Wales (Outlawville, TX): Do you think Max Ramirez can be a .300/.400/.500 hitter in the Major Leagues?Kevin Goldstein: No. That gets thrown around a lot -- a 3/4/5 guy, but that's pretty damn rare. For example, last year there was a grand total of eight of them.

knockoutking (lonestarball.com): if wilmer font has a breakout/healthy year this year, what are the chances he jumps into the top 100?
Kevin Goldstein: They’re solid. He’s one of the best young, pure arm strength guys around, he’s just very raw and has a checkered past as far as the ability to stay healthy.

Or (Dallas): Joe Sheehan said yesterday that he thinks Saltalamacchia could make an allstar appearance this season. I love the optimism, but this is the same guy who looked lost both beside and behind the plate for two years, and I have trouble seeing that sort of projection.
Kevin Goldstein: I think it’s a little strong, but I certainly don’t think it’s crazy at all.

first I've seen this...
don (lansing, MI): What’s your take on Detroit’s decision to plug Porcello into the rotation? I’m equal parts giddy and horrified.
Kevin Goldstein: Stick to giddy. When you are ready you are ready.

Porcello pitching right now.
E on Cabrera at 1B is not helping his debut.
JD: Adamant about 78 wins in 2009. Go Rangers!
Three batters, three groundballs.
E3
Slow roller that prevented a double play
DP 1-6-3
Nice start for the kid.
JD: Adamant about 78 wins in 2009. Go Rangers!
a .352 obp
hardly qualifies one as being “lost” at the plate
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
w00t
ive made the big time!
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.
lineup today
1. Ian Kinsler, 2B
2. Michael Young, 3B
3. Josh Hamilton, CF
4. Andruw Jones, DH
5. Nelson Cruz, RF
6. Marlon Byrd, LF
7. Chris Davis, 1B
8. Taylor Teagarden, C
9. Omar Vizquel, SS
Stability is key, and JD is a Beast.
zywica for life...
I just don't get it
Cruz is good enough to bat 4th almost every day….. except when the 25th man is in the lineup.
What do voluntary mean?
i had no idea there was a lefty on the mound...
Stability is key, and JD is a Beast.
zywica for life...
if only
i knew he would since wash said he would, but jones should not be battling cleanup v a righty. even lefty is highy questionable, but righty?
thankfully i assume the cleveland lineup will be at half strength too.
the preceding post was a great success.
didn't you know Carl Pavano is ambidextrous
"Take me out to the ball game, Take me out with the crowd. Buy me some peanuts and cracker jacks, I don't care if I never get back, Let me root, root, root for the RANGERS, If they don't win it's a shame. For it's one, two, three strikes, your out, At the old ball game."
eh
Its Wash on a travel day day game. He does weird things. We know this. Hard to read too much into this
Though fwiw, I agree with you
He was also quoted as saying...
the every team he’s ever been associated with tried to get everyone in the lineup during that initial home series to get them engaged (my word) before the team hit the road.
It’s really not that big a deal that he’s playing, is it??? Seems like a lot of folks have rabbit ears for any AJ appearance right now.
The Texas Rangers have been synonymous with explosive firepower ever since they emptied 130 rounds into Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow in 1934. - Alyssa Milano
Rare though they be, Max is one of them.
I don’t mind going out on a limb for Max anymore than KG did for Feliz.
JD: Adamant about 78 wins in 2009. Go Rangers!
reasoning
Goldstein doesn’t make much of a case. “Not many players do it, so odds are this specific player won’t do it”. Gee thanks for that insight. I mean a 300/400/500 OPS guy needs to have patience, contact skills, and power. Look at Max track record – check, check, and check.
But he is right in that 900 OPS is much more valuable than some here some to think. If it comes in the form of a DH, it is still very valuable.
Doctor please. Some more of these.
I think its one of those things that is unfair to say someone can do until they do it in the Majors
If you think he can do that, then he must be one of the top prospects in baseball in your mind.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

I think I've been pretty clear
I think Max is one of the top bats around, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he turns out to be a better hitter than CD.
Doctor please. Some more of these.
agree
he treats the question like an economist. Well, the chances are that he will not become one. Okay, that’s fine. What do you project, Mr. Goldstein? Where does he fall short? How about some insight?
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
Its a chat
Not exactly much time for a full analysis.

I wonder if Goldstein has seen "Josey Wales: An animated movie".
JD: Adamant about 78 wins in 2009. Go Rangers!
The big studios...
screwed me over on distribution. All I can hope for now is that it becomes a cult classic.

I saw
Be Kind Rewind yesterday and I thought of your little production.
I couldn’t decide if you were Jack Black or Mos Def, though.

OK - I'm confused
Are there two Josey Wales out there? This one sounds almost optomistic and he asks how Max will hit in the “Big Leagues” instead of “The Show.” What the hell’s going on here?
Remember Red, hope is a good thing. Maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies.

...yes it is
my bad on it – was submitting a ton of questions and had one where i used the “usual” JW lines about johnny donuts, nolan, etc and accidently included it on this one
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.
