3-0
Okay, not great, start by Brandon McCarthy. Scott Feldman underwhelming in relief. But scoring 12 runs gives you a lot larger margin of error.
The last time the Rangers started a season 3-0 was in 1996.
Texas now heads to Detroit for three against the fearsome Tiggers.

I'm watching Scott Boras's press conference in references to Adenhart.
It’s making me very uncomfortable. His emotion seems so forced. Trying too hard to seem like he’s a tearful wreck.
One has to have a heart to have emotions
And Boras does not.

I think we should do this.
The Bills are reportedly shopping WR/PR Roscoe Parrish as an “exploratory measure.”
Last year’s first-round pick Leodis McKelvin has emerged as a dynamic returner, and the Terrell Owens signing has pushed Parrish down the depth chart on a roster that has nine wide receivers. At this point, he’s more of a luxury than a necessity for the Bills. Apr. 9 – 7:02 pm et

Denver may be the team to target for a trade up
They’re switching to a 3-4, right? Could have interest in Ellis or Carpenter, and they could use the extra picks. That would get us farther enough up to grab one of the studs.

I don't remember much about the rangers from 95-97
I sort of just tuned them out for whatever reason. I had moved from Grapevine but wasn’t in to baseball enough to be attentive to the Rangers.
1998 was the first year I actually followed baseball with any seriousness so it’s also the first year I remember the Rangers vividly.

McCarthy threw the ball well, for the most part...
Some of the off-speed stuff looked filthy… Just missed on a lot of pitches, too… At the very least, it’s a good place to start and something to build off going forward…
In my short stint at home...
…watching on tv, his fastballs were getting parked in the seats, though.
He definitely paid for it when he made mistakes...
But overall, he threw the ball as well as I can remember since his time he Arlington, from a purely ‘stuff’ standpoint…
he got squeezed so bad he had to put pitches down the middle to get the call
at some points. other points he was given the corner.
horribly inconsistent calls
"I'm against picketing, but I don't know how to show it." - Mitch Hedberg
He looked pretty good
Ump had an inconsistent strike zone, so that could have played into the high pitch count. Then again, getting 105 pitches out of him is an accomplishment in itself. Offspeed stuff looked very nice.

i thought the key was not to leave the game hurt
(Wife) "So what do you want to watch on the T.V.? UFC or porn?"

he had it for a lot of the game
The ump wasn’t doing him any favors though with that strike zone.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
I thought it looked OK
he didn’t get a lot of calls on balls he was keeping low in the zone. then when forced, he allowed an easier pitch to take deep – and the wind took those fly ball outs the rest of the way. Although I guess I could agree that Shoppach and Grady’s were actual HR balls

But… if you can’t use Madrigal in the ninth inning when you have a five-run lead and are on the way out of town, when can you use him? Everyone else in the bullpen made it in this series, some pitchers twice. But Mad Dog sat last night with a four-run lead late, and today with a five-run lead late.
If you can’t even use him in those situations, since he has options, why is he up here sitting on his ass instead of in AAA where he can get work in on a regular basis?
well the guys that did pitch needed to get their work in too
im sure madrigal will pitch tomorrow.

Sheppalicious!!! Your. Best. Ever.
Josh Hamilton puts his pants on one leg at a time just like you but once he gets his pants on he hits baseballs 420 feet.
well
it sure helps your pitching staff at times to have an offense that will go out and score you 12 runs. McCarthy did not look that great but he battled, feldman was def. disappointing.. But hey we are 3-0 and i am pumped. Good to see Omar and Andruw come off the bench and really play well.
born to destroy
Couldnt be happier about the start and even today.
Now we just need Kris Benson to go out tomorrow and throw a gem to prove again Feldman wasn’t the man for the rotation. BMac last a long 5 innings with no apparent injuries and had decent stuff. Thats good enough stuff to be our 3rd starter. And what can you say about this Offense!! ESPN SUCK IT!!!!

What was more ridiculous than the limited time they spent on the game was the highlights they chose.
If you’re going to choose two highlights from that game, you choose Cruz’s first home run and some dude (Salty?) getting a base hit? Why?

HOW we arived to that 4.33 bothers me.
But, if we go 4.33 at home against the better hitting teams in the Majors all season I’ll probably expect a playoff berth.

Well, good game for the offense (with the exception of Hamilton and Davis)
But I think we might have the worst bullpen in the major leagues. I just don’t know how we plan on getting the ball to Frankie when it’s a 1-2 run game in the 7th inning right now.

I'm banking on Nippy... Mad Dog not so much

The young arms are the only hope for this pen
They need a Frankie/Almanzar type breakout from some combination of Madrigal, Nippert, Moscoso, Diamond, or maybe Hunter. That and if the rotation can stay healthy and be decent, Holland and Feliz could wind up as BIG parts of the pen down the stretch.
Don't you ever damn call here again
Yep
That’s what I’m hoping for. I think Nippert will do good things once he comes off the DL, so hopefully he’ll prove me right. Other than that though, I think this bullpen could have a pretty rough time until some of those young guys are ready in the summer.

I will be paying extra close attention
to what Diamond, Moscoso, Strop, Madrigal, and Nippert do. Those guys have the type of power arms that can give a bullpen a bit of a swagger.
I would love for Beau Jones to come out smokin early on too because Guardado looks cooked and this team needs another lefty out there.
Don't you ever damn call here again
could it be that you'd like to throw another piece of the Tex trade out there too?

All 5 at the ML level would be fun, and could very well happen by the start of 2010
Don't you ever damn call here again
I think
Based on how Madrigal is being used (or not used, really) I think it’s obvious he’s just an emergency guy and is bound for the minors as soon as Nippert comes off the DL.
And I can’t say I disagree with that line of thinking.
He does need more seasoning.
But I really thought he would get some work today.

I’m not in love with the guy or anything… just seems like if you cna’t bring him in for one inning with a five-run lead when literally everyone in the bullpen except him pitched either last night or today, then what’s the point of having him up here?

McCarthy
I think today was encouraging for McCarthy. He definitely didn’t have very good control of his fastball, but he was able to mix in an above average breaking ball to keep hitters off balance enough to get through 5 innings and minimize damage.
If he can have a little better command of his fastball and that breaking ball, he will be a very good starter. I am cautiously optimistic. It is nice to see him throwing a solid breaking ball for strikes.
The first three he threw (which should have netted him 3 straight Ks)
were a thing of beauty.
Don't you ever damn call here again
I liked the Ks he got on his breaking ball and then with his fastball when he caught
some hitters looking for the breaking ball, but I’m just as excited about the “gritiness” of his effort.

Good game to watch for the first few innings
Yes, the wind was blowing out and the Ranger were playing in the same conditions but most of the Rangers lineup was doing some damage. Indians just had a few guys making good contact. We expect our pitchers to beat every good hitter every time but if they manage to put down the lower-level players they’ll be OK.

Between the inconsistent home plate umpire and the wind, today was a very difficult day to pitch – as the results for most of the pitchers show. McCarthy’s slurve was great.
The bullpen scares me, but if CJ and Frankie are good, the rest will sort itself out (with growing pains along the way).

(yeah, it took me almost TWO F*CKING HOURS to get home, and I live in downtown Dallas.)
Everyone looked “OK”. The wind was REALLY blowing out, basically just about anything that flew got out or close to it. I haven’t watched the game off the Tivo yet (yeah, I do it), but late in the game when all the smoke/dust/etc arrived from West Texas, it got very hazy and visibility was pretty bad. The other thing I noticed was the smell that came with it – it’s that “hey there’s a big fire somewhere” smell.
This game was WAY too long.

Suh-weet: The Bench Brigade to the Rescue
On your typical day, the Rangers have 21 Gold Gloves sitting on their bench, a guy who has hit .300 over the last two seasons and a catcher who might be the best defensive talent in the game.
On Thursday, just three games into the season, manager Ron Washington cleared the bench by starting DH Andruw Jones (10 Gold Gloves) and SS Omar Vizquel (11 Gold Gloves), LF Marlon Byrd and C Taylor Teagarden. All they did was combine to go eight-for-18 with a pair of walks, a home run and six RBIs as the Rangers clinched a season-opening sweep of Cleveland with a 12-8 win.
And…suck it, Bitchez:
"I just think everybody that goes in there wants to get the job done," Jones said. "I think it starts with everybody. No matter who goes out there and who is on the bench, we are ready to play when asked to. I think that’s pretty special."
