Sigh

Or, why you shouldn't read the comments at the DMN blog...

The last three comments made on Richard Durrett's "let's talk about the sweep" post:

McCarthy was crappy today.

LOL attendance was 14k. I won't be setting foot in the wind tunnell all year to watch 4 hour softball games.

Good to see all the brilliant bullpen acquisitions turn out so well.

yeah…that’s funny.

mccarthy wasn’t great, but definitely not crappy

and i don’t think acquiring a bullpen was ever a real big need

and oh yeah, the rangers won!!

Quit being such a homer...
One caveat though is that LSB is all homer all the time and that they tend to cherry pick their statistics in typical lawyerly fashion often omitting the truth in the process.

that year in and year out, the franchise was obviously going in the wrong direction (until recently), yet somehow there were folks who thought you couldn’t possibly criticize the front office. This goes back to early ESPN and Newberg days (early ’00s).

Point of view

I think the patrons posting on the DMN blog are some of those I typefied several years ago as “football fans who think their team’s success directly represents their own ego and sense of worth”. Or stuff to that effect. Hell I’m a septugenarian, and I’m absolutlely delighted that today’s (our) twenty and thirty somethings care enough about baseball to dig into its’ factuality, using statistics and analytical metrics to assess progress and have fun trying to predict both team outcomes and individual player progress.

It’s unfortunate that shock jocks of every ilk don’t think they are respected until and unless they get attention for being mouthy, inconsiderate, accusatory, and generally shadow blind and tone deaf to the world around them. Good old plastic, chrome, and marble Dallas (covering tar paper personna).

I was a DMN fan for a while

I just didn’t know any better. I’ve learned more about statistical nuances and the machinations of the organization in the several months I’ve been on (read: hopelessly addicted) to this site, than I had in years/decade on the DMN, Star-T, and those ridiculous grocery store magazines (Street & Smith, et al.).

I go back to the DMN every now and again, and I wonder how many of those people commenting 1) care about baseball enough to suffer the learning curve 2) even know about sites like LSB, or even the Newberg Report for that matter 3) are willing to admit how little they know or how much there is to know about the game.

I also think the Randy Galloways of the world hold sway over those type of people. It’s easier to make blanket criticisms and never learn the subtleties of the game. It’s also easier to cling to whatever opinion you’ve been fed without questioning what might be motivating the person feeding it to you.

I fucking love this site. You’re all stuck with me.

Only I started out on TR Sullivan’s blog.

Once I came to LSB however, and had a few slices of humble pie fed to me by the rest of the community here, I realized TR and his blog have either gotten much, much worse compared to when I first started out, or I’ve learned enough here at LSB to make “Postcards” irrelevant. It’s probably a little bit of both, really, seeing as how TR’s developed crotchety old sportswriter syndrome over the last year or so.

ESPN and Newberg

So, I hear a lot of references to the days of the ESPN boards and Newberg. Honestly, I never knew they existed. Looking for intelligent baseball conversation using metrics, I stumbled upon Baseball Think Factory. It is an excellent site, but at the time (when Depodesta signed Choi) nobody had anything to say about the Rangers. So I used Google, found LSB back when it was on blogspot and never bothered to go elsewhere. So, who was around for the ESPN boards and Newberg, and when was this?

by Excel Hearts Choi on Apr 10, 2009 6:49 AM CDT reply actions

I found Newberg on the ESPN boards back in 2001 or 2002..something like that

I didn’t post much, but you learned pretty quick that Jamey knew his stuff, so I signed up for his newsletter. Eventually I made my way over to LSB after I got tired of some of the Josey threads over at NMLR.

Adam, Cahill, Sharky, cstorm, chase, Athos, Ed Coffin, Escher, zywica, Texassportsfan, and I were all on the old ESPN board. I started posting there in 2000 I think. The Juan trade and the ARod signing with subsequent battles with Mariners fans were highlights of the early days.

I stopped posting there when a guy named LarryLegend pretty much ruined it 2 or 3 years ago. He was a much more constant and annoying version of Josey Wales….I know that sounds impossible but it’s true.
