Question about the photos
Okay, as you've noticed, we've got the rights to use AP photos now at SBN, and I've been incorporating them in my posts.
I'm interested in what you guys think of it. Cast your vote.

Just more clutter
Taking up more space. Just like almost every other website.

Yep.
I voted, “Like it somewhat” The pics sometimes get too big and make reading the posts awkward.

OT:
Scott Lucas is a beast. Truly beastly.
Every major national writer covering baseball needs to read it because I’m sure 95% of them don’t understand it. Concise and eloquent. Truly awesome.

I'm not so much against...
the Ranger photos as I am some of the creepy crap that some of the posters put on the board.
I'm ok with pictures
I never want to see sound or video though. Thats when I left ESPN.

it's not that bad now
they don’t start playing automatically as long as you turn it off (just once, not every time).

I love them
I have no real reason to check out many other sports websites for Rangers news, since LSB guides me to all of that, so I never have an occasion to see these pictures yet I enjoy seeing them whenever I do. Picture’s worth a thousand words.
Remember Red, hope is a good thing. Maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies.
From a rather newbie
I voted meh, only because that is not the reason I came here nor would it be a reason why I stay here. Photos are fine, but this place has the best intelligent discussion about a professional team anywhere on the web.
I don't like it myself
Just clutters up the front page posts, IMO.
Hello Win Column - no two-tone helmets have been included in our redesign.
I personally dig
mainly bc I don’t really go anywhere else for Ranger news.
Arguing with Josey is like pissing in the wind.
I like it
Mainly because I get just about all of my Baseball news from here.
In memory of Nick Adenhart.
Negative
Don’t like it at all. Adds unnecessary clutter. The occasional picture isn’t bad, but adding pics to every other entrys a bit much.

Speaking of Photos I wish I had thought to grab a camera
I got a call from a neighbor at our land up near Montague County to let me know they had given them 2 hours to evacuate at about 8:45. Took me an hour to get there in my truck along with a buddy and his truck as we violated every speed limit known to man. By that time they had gotten in down to only one lane headed up there but luckily we were 2 of about 10 people it seemed. We managed to get the tractor and trailer up to the end of the gravel road where they had some deputies posted to watch everyone’s stuff and shut down the roads. I counted 9 tractors and a handful of ATVs and vehicles parked there. Did a quick sweep to get some firearms, photos, fishing gear, etc. out of the cabin and into the trucks then hauled ass out of there. I’m crossing my fingers we don’t lose the cabin, bunkhouse, or barn but you could see some of the flames and it was incredibly dense with smoke.
I had asked my neighbor to douse the area around the cabin and bunkhouse this afternoon and he got it done but I really wasn’t thinking it would get that bad. Stupid on my part. One of the officers told me that they were hoping to get some helicopters in there overnight and were doing everything they could. We were one of the last people to head out on the road before they shut down the dirt roads to get back in where our place is. The wind is making it hell up there for the people fighting the fire. The best thing is we don’t have any cattle out there right now. A guy up the road had apparently been moving cattle all afternoon but still had about 20 head out there when he had to pull out.
It’s really just a get away place for us that we run a few cattle on every year, but mainly it’s a hunting a fishing place and family get together place. A lot of people up there, that land is their livelihood. Really bad situation.
I used to shoot baskets
Just got back and read some of the updates
and Sunset was one of the areas hit the hardest. We are about 20 miles from there and apparently in an area where the red flag warning has already expired. Turns out about 15-20 miles away they had to evacuate 4 or 5 hours before us. My neighbor called and told me he had heard that based on the winds and humidity levels it looked like we were going to be in the clear.
I used to shoot baskets
Now I'm biased a bit, since I have my own SBN website.
And it’s interesting to hear everyone’s thoughts here.
I’m still trying to figure out the best dynamic for DBD, but I think there’s a good way and bad way to use the photos. When incorporated cleanly into a post, such as this morning’s a.m. stuff, then it works fine.
But when the photo takes up the whole post and the text doesn’t match, such as the post game thread from today, then it looks cluttered.
Lone Star Ball has always had a different dynamic than other blogs around SBN and the web. This is a place that feeds on discussion points and news, and does not rely on newspaper style presentation to be effective. So for LSB, perhaps a more subtle approach would be best.

i'm sorry man
but i hate it…like Daheel and LSJ said, way too much clutter. I love just the simplicity of blogs, and that’s why i loved the original format when it was atexasrangersblog.com or whatever your first website was…I like how it is now too, but when u add the pictures it looks very newspaper-webish (bleh!)…

They're ok
as long as you don’t start having too many of them, or photos with every post.

At the very least
I think we can all agree that a post with text, photos, a graph, and a little graphic baseball player (Ichiro?) ad is a bit much.
Firefox/Adblock dude.
It’s the shit. I never have to see that Ichiro-looking dude in the Giants uniform.
Hello Win Column - no two-tone helmets have been included in our redesign.
Yeah
I use Firefox and don’t take much advantage of it.
I’m usually never bothered by popups and that’s good enough for me.

I'm not a fan of the photos
i suppose in moderation it would be ok, but it clutters the page too much.
"I'm against picketing, but I don't know how to show it." - Mitch Hedberg
Another thing I should mention
If we have to have the photos, keeping the captions as short as possible would be preferable (or better yet, if you could fix it so that the caption only pops up when you roll your mouse across the photo that would be ideal).
I’d say the caption on this entry’s photo of Andrus is a perfect example of what not to do.

Guhgree
A picture may be worth a thousand words, but you don’t have to use all one thousand in the caption.
Zing!
Purgatory's kind of like the in-betweeny one. You weren't really shit, but you weren't all that great either. Like Tottenham.
For instance
The 3-0 thread tells us in the McCarthy picture caption that he is “follow[ing] through with a pitch.”
I guess I don’t think the captions should include such extraneous information.

Oh really?
I suppose I just assumed that he wrote the captions. If he doesn’t, then disregard that criticism.

I think he has the option of using the AP one
or writing his own

Hmm
If there’s an option for “none”, I think that’s the way to go.

Hmmm
You’re right, I forgot about the caption he wrote for the captioning contest a few days ago.
But I strongly suspect the captions that are below most of the pics are default, AP written captions. But it appears he may have the option of editing/removing them.
Yes
Such as the one I did where I said Cliff Lee had his imaginary friend “Corky” in a headlock.
But usually, I leave the AP caption in place.

Personally
I really, really like them. I think it adds another level to the blog. I do agree with Brandon’s point that the layout should be considered. May favorite layouts so far have been photo on top (the last two GDT’s) and yesterday’s AM things where it’s tucked in nicely.
While the others don’t bother me, they can look a little weird when the photo and caption is taking up twice the space as the text.
I like the pictures....
I just do not like the captions. Most are either too long or giving info that is not relevant.
We know “…after a baseball game against the Cleveland Indians, Wednesday, April 8, 2009, in Arlington, Texas.” , duh.
The 2009 Texas Rangers..........they're awesome, man.
