Rangers "all but certain to sign" Guillermo Pimentel

Nice!!!!

With two months remaining until the July 2 start of the signing period, several high-profile players are starting to get linked to certain teams. Outfield prospect Guillermo Pimentel, a left-handed slugger, is all but certain to sign with the Texas Rangers for a bonus that many Dominican sources believe will be in the $1.5 million to $2 million range. Pimentel has spent a significant amount of time at the Rangers' academy in the Dominican and also visited the team's spring training facility in Arizona in March. At least two international scouting directors say that Pimentel will no longer work out for teams, making it all the more likely Texas will sign him.

AND

The Rangers are also heavily tied to Curacao pitcher Jurickson Profar, a 16-year-old right-hander who once starred in the 2004 Little League World Series.

Based on the name alone he’s sure to become the best pitcher in the history of baseball.

On a serious note, I agree. Playing baseball as a kid in a nice front yard with a good Louisville Slugger bat and Wilson glove is something we take for granted too often.

When Ben and I were living together...

…we were watching a Rangers game, and Juan Gonzalez was mad after an at bat and was complaining, and Tom Grieve said that Juan was upset because the batter’s box was too hard.

We ended getting into a big discussion about how Juan needed the ground to be softer like it was in Puerto Rico in order to hit, and his pants must not be too baggy, and he wanted chickens running around in the outfield like when he was growing up hitting the ball.

Latin bonuses

I’ve read that Neftali Feliz signed for only $100,000 and Johnny Cueto only got $10,000.

I’m sure there are plenty of others. Just curious, are these cases of guys that weren’t discovered, guys that only blossomed after getting older, or what? How do such highly talented guys slip through the cracks and sign for such small amounts?

If you take the worst pitching staff in baseball, then add Kris Benson and Jason Jennings, what do you have???

surprise!!! You have the worst pitching staff in baseball, that's what.

by tricer on May 1, 2009 3:51 PM CDT reply actions

Teams do a good job of shielding players.

If you find a really good prospect that’s off the beaten path in the LA market, job #1 is to make sure no one else finds out about them. That’s the reason why more talented guys sign for less. If they have inexperienced agents/buscones, and the scout does a good job of running interference, you can basically have no competition and set the bonus level yourself.

by Andy Seiler on May 1, 2009 4:03 PM CDT up reply actions

My guess it's a little of both.

Anytime you’re talking about 16 year-olds there’s a chance guys are going to blossom after signing (or of course, go completely to shit). There’s just so much growing left to do.

But of course given the amount of small towns and villages out there it’s also entirely possible some of those guys simply didn’t get the exposure necessary to incite a bidding war.

I don’t know enough about the specific stories of those two guys to figure it out.

definitely, with our scouting work

we are doing over there, this might be the most effecient and productive market for us to spend in…. We can really accumulate and continue to build a strong talent base no matter what our draft position is. I know many have said that anybody can build a top system while drafting high like the Rays have in the past and you can always build a strong farm system when you are trading your ML talent away b/c you arent in contention. But if we continue to do a solid job in the draft and pour tons of money into the LA market, Our farm system wont depend on us sucking the life out of our ML team.

Profar's mechanics

I know very little about pitching mechanics (I’m not sure I could spot scap loading, across-the-body motion, or any of the other no-no’s if I had to), so I may be all wet when I say this, but I like Profar’s. The guy saying “effortless” in the background said what I was thinking. He’s just very smooth and fun to watch.

Is it a mechanical no-no that he turns his back on the hitter during his windup?

on the turn your back to the hitter part...

i know thats not a no-no if you make it work… I know this also can be a type of deception in your delivery

re: "Is it a mechanical no-no that he turns his back on the hitter during his windup?"

It’s not something you’d teach a young to do, but plenty of big league pitchers have used this mechanism in their deliveries and been more than fine.

And CBS doesn’t even have Perez ranked among AL/NL starting pitchers – which is VERY surprising to me since people here seemed so adamant that he is very good, citing a litany of numbers/stats/seemingly important ratios – all in a manner to protect JD from criticism.

Do the Rangers set aside a specific

amount of money they anticipate needing for LA, Draft, etc? They have to know whether this is a good year for LA or not so I would guess Hicks already put aside the money they needed before this “financial” crisis he’s found himself in.

How does the budget work for this?

by Hull Fan on May 1, 2009 5:56 PM CDT up reply actions

From what we've seen

it isn’t really a set budget per se. I would guess that there is a soft budget, but they’re willing to go over for appropriate players. They set aside the money for Ynoa and Smoak, for example.

So with someone like Pimentel, aside from the fact that they had money earmarked for Ynoa and were unable to spend it, they knew early on that they wanted this guy. He is probably his own aspect of the budget, and they probably set the rest of the budget based on the idea that they sign him.

Curacao..

I spent three months there a couple of years ago, and I can almost guarantee that Profar’s favorite team is the Rangers. And if not the Rangers, definitely the Braves. They are batshit insane for Andruw Jones in Curacao. I don’t know what the overall talent pool is like there, but I’ll bet the scouts are playing the Andruw card pretty hard if they’re looking at other kids there.

It’s pretty funny, there was all that love for Jones, and I only found out Ponson was from Curacao when he joined the Rangers a year later.

You're more right than you realize...

Most of the women who are topless at the beach, really shouldn’t be. And the one or two hot ones would freak out and move down the beach if they even sensed someone was looking in their direction.

I understand most of them come across their share of pervs, but it was kind of ridiculous. It gets to the point where everyone involved would be more comfortable if they weren’t topless.

I realize I’m like two words from losing my man card, but it’s the truth.

This early movement

has to be motivated by how we were swindled for Inoa last year right?

There's always movement this early.

It’s just that there’s now a consistent English blog that writes about it this year.

by Andy Seiler on May 2, 2009 12:28 AM CDT up reply actions

Looking back on it, were we really swindled?

I read an article stating the Mr. Bean made two personal trips down to see Ynoa and had long visits with him and his parents that really made it sound like he got sold on the A’s before the bidding even began (much like what we’re doing with this Pimentel kid) but that the A’s didn’t do anything there that mosts teams don’t do with guys they covet. Basically the just made the stronger sales pitch and so when it came time to talk money and we made the top offer he had already made up his mind.

If some team came in and offered him 500k more than we’re offering for Pimentel but he said, “No, thanks. I’ve already agreed with the Rangers. I’m comfortable with them and I won’t turn my back on them at this point.”, would we then be swindlers?

Seems like the A’s nailed him down with old fashioned recruiting and then we got mad when we came in with all these juicy gobs of cash and he’d already made his decision.

I’d really like to get a definitive answer on exactly what happened when with regards to the Ynoa thing, but I doubt we’ll ever have anything more than ambiguous quotes from here and there that don’t really tell the whole story.

Or maybe one of our insiders actually knows.

I’d love to hear a definitive story on this.

Wasn't there a quote from Ynoa

that basically said had he known the Rangers offer earlier, he would have taken their’s over the A’s? Plus, I’m sure the Rangers had met with him a good few times too and weren’t just offering 6+ million dollars to him without having the higher ups talk with him.

I have been known to critique

the moves of the front office every now and then, but this is very encouraging news. after the ynoa debacle last year, i am very glad to see us come out and aggressively nail down a few key players this year. as nice as it would have been to sign another bullpen arm or two this winter, if not signing those guys allows us to go and get a few extra studs in this year’s LA class, then long term, it is probably the better way to spend that money.
