Well I guess at this point

Holland has a chance for his first win or loss…

Hindsight is 20-20, but that was a pretty questionable move by Ron Washington. Feldman was really cruising and hadn’t allowed a hard hit ball all night.

I really think it is time to cut bait with Benson. Feldman deserves a chance to stay in the rotation for the foreseeable future and Holland needs to be the next in line to take a rotation spot when it opens. Jennings is also available to start at some point, if needed. I honestly believe that there is no place for Benson at this point. Then again, I didn’t think there was a place for him out of spring training, so what do I know.

by Stephen Rushin on May 1, 2009 8:34 PM CDT reply actions

Honestly...

I wouldn’t be all that upset if he’d get the long relief role. Or at least go into the bullpen in some fashion. Depending on who gets cut of course…

So lets get this straight

We have a pitcher with a ERA over 5 for the season and for his career who has a reputation of falling apart in the 5th/6th inning, and is in only his second start since moving into the rotation.

The back end of your bullpen + holland is well rested. Feldman could probably only go another inning anyway.

Feldman walks a batter to load the bases to face a power hitting lefty who has a .300 lower ops against lefties the past 3 years.

You decide to bring in your power lefty who needs to get in a game and has pitched very well thus far.

Fire the manager? The likely result of that at bat was an out. A hall of fame bound slugger hit a double. It sucks for feldman and it sucks for the game, but come on he didn’t luis mendoza or josh rupe in there.

the preceding post was a great success.

If Feldman stays in the game, Thome is likely the last hitter he faces anyway.

by Stephen Rushin on May 1, 2009 8:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Well for myself, I was saying no no no no as he got Holland. It may be in part wanting to protect Holland, but it wasn’t a second guess.

by Brett Perryman on May 1, 2009 8:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Sure

I felt the same way. I also would have preferred to protect Holland and not bring him into such a critical part of the ballgame. As was already mentioned several times, Feldman had already handled Thome pretty well, including a K, and was cruising until that little flair up in the 6th. If I were Washington, I wouldn’t have made a pitching change at that point.

CJ would have been a better candidate for that situation, probably. But I guess Washington wanted someone who could handle a couple innings. Reasonable move? Sure. The best move at the time? I don’t know. Now it looks like Holland will get his first loss. Oh well.

by Stephen Rushin on May 1, 2009 8:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Well I don't think that it was reasonable

There was no reason that he had to bring in someone who could go two innings there. If CJ gets Thome, he can either pitch the seventh or Holland can pitch the 7th and 8th. No reason you have to have Holland face that batter just to save the bullpen. I think that he came into this game expecting to use Holland because he is past due and Feldman didn’t figure to go that long, and he never quite got out of that mindset.

by DShep on May 1, 2009 8:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes...but

Feldman needs to get to a point where he’s not falling apart after 5 innings…it seems to me that this would have been a good chance to do that. I want to see if he can gain the confidence to get out of those situations. If he does that, then the pitching coach and manager will have the confidence in him as well. What’s the point of having him in the rotation if he’s just going to go out there for 5 innings, get in a little trouble and say to himself, “well, I guess I’m about to get pulled out of the game”.

This is the Ron Washington rationale from past years

And it’s stupid.

You’ve got a guy with great stuff in the bullpen, you use him when you feel you need to, and let him take his lumps. The timing of the situation Wash used him in may have been questionable, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be using him in tough spots.
