like I said, I don’t like him particularly. But I just think the mindless “he sucks” are really annoying. I would like to identify actual bad moves. Instead, people just point out moves that are slightly less than completely obvious and take the opposite side when it doesn’t work out. At least you didn’t think the holland move was bad but when he has to decide between pinch hitting two bottom of the order hitters and he decides to PH his #9 hitter as opposed to his #8 hitter – geez

here's another reason i was mulling

the #9 hitter is going to get some good pitches to hit because jenks doesn’t want to pitch to kinsler. so, there’s a good case that can be made that murphy wasn’t going to get better looks from the #9 spot then the #8 spot.

it’s not a great reason, but it factors in

Hank Blalock's pitch recognition sucks.

I’d say his plate discipline sucks too, but he doesn’t have any.

I could probably go stand in the batters box and work the count better than him right now.

Well, 637 OPS with men on

But an 842 OPS with 2 HR with RISP. So he’s been decent at driving in runs, most of the time.

His problem is his hacktastic tendencies mean he’s not getting on base the rest of the time, and therefore creating a ton of outs.

Which isn't very good and still skewed by his high SLG.

Given the small sample size, his OPS, wOBA, wRaa, WPA, etc. etc. are totally irrelevant to me right now. The dude just looks straight up fucking terrible at the plate. It honestly looks like he’s trying to homer his way to a new contract.

If Blalock plays another fucking game ahead of Jones when Hamilton gets back, both Daniels and Washington deserve to be skewered.

by LiamP on May 1, 2009 11:06 PM CDT up reply actions

A .352 wOBA is far from bad if he keeps it up all year

Yes, he looks bad at the plate, but Blalock is better than this. He’s seen 3.36 pitches/PA while he has averaged about 3.7 for his career. He’s walking 1.3% of the time while he has walked 8.3% of the time over his career. This isn’t going to last all season. And if he manages a .352 wOBA until he starts showing his usual patience, its something I can live with.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw

by Gdawg on May 1, 2009 11:16 PM CDT up reply actions

It's irrelevant whether or it lasts all season.

No, he’s not going to walk at a 1.3% pace for the rest of this year, but he’s not going to reach 8.3% either. I wouldn’t be surprised if he finishes around the 6.9% he put up last year.

Jones is much much better at this point, and I’m willing to bet that Jones will be better than Blalock throughout the course of the year. Neither dude will be with the team next year…there’s no excuse not to play Jones.

Also, a .352 wOBA from a DH, on this team? I’m sorry, but that’s bad.

by LiamP on May 1, 2009 11:28 PM CDT up reply actions

I am perfectly fine if he puts up a 6.9% walk rate this season

With his power, that’s going to be a productive season for him.

Jones is playing better so far in the season, but I’m still skeptical on him being able to do this while playing everyday. Right now, he isn’t being overexposed to AL pitchers who haven’t ever seen much of him, and he has hit great during this time. Since Blalock isn’t hitting that poorly right now (contrary to popular belief), I think taking the risk of overexposing him right now isn’t worth it. With Hamilton on the DL though, it looks like we’ll be seeing more of Jones in LF everyday and we’ll be able to get a better idea on how he looks when he is playing everyday.

And a .352 wOBA is not bad. Its 1% better than the average hitter right now. When you consider that this is coming during what is most likely a semi-slump for him, its even better. Blalock is far from this team’s biggest problem and is way down the list of reasons why this team has lost games this season.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Looks great when these bats pummel subpar pitching.

But anytime they go up against good to great pitching, they wilt because they don’t know how to play small ball. And it’s all because of Rudy’s approach.

Batters had a 967 OPS against Feldman in the 6th inning last year, and a 1.271 OPS from the 7th inning on

And Feldman was just making his second start of the year. So I can definitely see the rationale behind having him on a short leash. It was probably overmanaging to not let him at least face Thome, but I can definitely understand the rationale behind the move.

After all, with Feldman’s history we’d be calling Wash a moron for not bringing Holland in if he’d have left Feldman in and Thome would’ve gotten that hit off him.

Just saying you want him to die or get an STD

is not nearly as bad as something like cancer that personally effects many people and is very specific. STD jokes are much more socially exceptable to laugh about than cancer. You can laugh at somebody for being cream for his herpes, but you don’t laugh at someone who is bald because of kemo therapy.

2. Why lett TT hit in the 9th? Andrus > TT.

I assume you meant

Murphy and Elvis > TT and Murphy.

1) barely, if at all

2) you are subbing your catcher, which you should avoid if you can

3) Murphy might have seen better pitches to hit from the 9 hole

4) you are possibly giving murphy a chance to hit with a runner in scoring position or possibly on third

5) the preceding reasons show that the move is not assinine but could have gone iether way (you could make a similar list for doing it the other way). Therefore, it’s not a real reason to bitch. Just a choice that could have probably gone either way.

If you are looking for the homerun to tie the game they both probably have as good a chance to do that. And since TT is far superior to Max defensively wouldn’t you want to have that guy in should you tie the game?

OK...

so I just finished watching the game on my DVR and haven’t read everything here. I’m sure there has been a lot of Wash bashing and usually I defend him, but I can’t tonight.

You don’t bring in Holland when Feldman is pitching the way he was pitching. He was under 80 pitches and earned the right to try and get out of that situation on his own. I’m tired of reading shit about how the Rangers want to get Holland’s feet wet and put him in situations that he can succeed. Bases loaded against Thome is not one of those situations. Especially for a guy coming out of the ‘pen who isn’t used to doing that.

Also, not to rain on the parade with Holland but he should still be in OKC working on his secondary pitches. Right now he looks like a one pitch pitcher to me. That fastball and location is pretty good and will get him by a lot of hitters. However if he is going to be the pitcher we all think he can be he needs to start throwing that slider for a strike and start using his change up.

I know Feldman...

is still being stretched out and his weakness last year was around that time in the game. However I think with the way he pitched tonight he should have been given the shot to get that last out. If the Rangers want their starters to go deeper into games, and constently say so, then pull a guy who was under 80 pitches with 2 hits and 1 walk the entire game I think it sends a bad message to Feldman. Maybe it’s just, me but he looked pretty upset that he was being pulled too. They should have had more faith in him in that situation after the way he had pitched. Just my opinion.

And so help me if Benson comes back and they put Feldman back in the ‘pen for him I’m going to hop aboard the fire Wash/JD train. Feldman needs to be in the rotation.

By the way, nice to see Firebat, Boomer, and yourself playing nice with a ChiSox fan. Haha.

There seems to be one issue with Feldman

And it’s the kind that won’t go away with conditioning, more innings or work, adjusting the arm slot, or anything else. He cannot go through a MLB lineup a third time, and generally has trouble getting through one a second time. Five innings of ground ball inducing brilliance is the absolute most anyone should expect of him.

I'm not sure

In the aggregate, you may be right, but the 6th tonight seemed a little fluky.

by brettgardner on May 1, 2009 11:37 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree

they sincerly had zero hard hit balls off him the entire night, he was pitching better than maybe any pitcher we’ve had going… Im very frustrated we managed to lose a game like this. We have been getting above average pitching for about a week now and yet we are right were we started a week ago.

There are alot of issues that need to be worked out with this team, and id say #1 right now is our approach at the plate and the mental errors we are making

I don't think you can say that more innings of work won't help him out

He’s been a reliever for most of his pro career. Having to go through a lineup more than once isn’t something he’s really had to work on. More innings of work could help him learn how to deal with facing the same hitter 3 or 4 times in a game. If he improves his stuff a bit more on top of that (or even in place of that), it could make enough of a difference to let him get through that 6th/7th inning.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

by Gdawg on May 1, 2009 11:42 PM CDT up reply actions

I hope you are right and I am wrong

About more innings being instructive. I’d love to be able to think he’s good for 6+ innings. When he was starting in the minors, it was symptomatic to go well until an inevitable letdown came. Not that he melts down, he doesn’t he’s competitive. The same stuff that induces mainly ground balls can be hit by MLB batters after they see it a couple of times. Ryan Drese had the same symptoms. Again, I hope I’m overly judgmental about ground ball guys who don’t have a swap off repertoire.

What do you think

is the cause of it? Just not a good enough breaking ball? Because guys like Westbrook made a pretty good living off of their fastballs when they were starters, despite having poor 2ndary stuff.

I'd have to see a cumulative pitch f/x scatter chart

(Which I’m too dumb to create) to verify it, but I think that his best stuff falls into very tight location clusters. Fool me twice, can’t fool me a third time.

Worst case scenario

Well, not worst case scenario, but if you’re right and I’m wrong:

We have a number 5 starter who we can guarantee on 5 solid innings from every 5th day. Holland’s struggles today aside, if you match Feldman up with Holland every 5th day then you can develop Holland effectively and still give your team a solid shot at winning games.

this is what they are doing it looks like

it was just unfortunate that they took him out exactly at that time. I think leaving Feldman in there would have been the correct call and then allowing Holland to start the next inning if you felt like that is the way you wanted to do things

I disagree

At least until after this year. Last year I think his stamina contributed alot to struggling the third time through the order. Along with his first two starts this year after being relegated to reliever to start the year. But now that he has a full season under his belt and is back to starter stamina I think you’ll see him alot better that third time through the order

Wash just doesn't trust Feldman

5.2 innings, 77 pitches, 0 runs scored and you pull the guy after giving up 2 singles and a walk??? Even if he does give up a run or two there, he’s still pitching a great game. Hell, giving up the grand slam still has him having a solid Ranger start if he can make it through one more inning. Would Wash ever even consider pulling Padilla or Millwood before they are at 100 pitches or at least 5 ER given up.

"Wash just doesn't trust Feldman"...

I’m starting to think that’s really all there is to it. After pitching the way he did in the rotation last year he shouldn’t have had to earn a spot in the rotation to start this year. It’s not like the Rangers signed a couple really good quality pitchers for the rotation that pushed him back into the ‘pen. I know the guy isn’t and ace, but there is zero reason for someone like Benson to be given the shot ahead of Feldman. What the hell has Benson done to earn anyone’s trust in the short time he has been with the Rangers?

He hasn't pitched since being called up, right?

I’m not sure I’ve seen a single in-game situation where I would say Mendoza would be perfect right here, but working with a smaller bullpen isn’t going to help anymore than having Mendoza in a game. He’d do as well as Guardado at least.

Fine.

But Fast Eddie and C.J. had the really good career numbers against Thome and would have been better options out of the pen than an unproven Derek Holland. I know you want to bring the kid along and all, but…

Thome’s line against Eddie Guardado:

32 ABs – 5 hits – 20 Ks – .156 average.

Thome’s line against C.J. Wilson:

4 ABs – 1 hit – 2 K – .250 average.
