17-14
A 5-2 road trip. Solid starting pitching. Sitting here the day before an off-day with a comfortable lead, and knowing that Wash probably needs to pull a starter who could go another inning because he needs to get his bullpen some work.
This feels so weird.

i was wondering about the Defense up the middle and its effect on pitcher confidence
you know it has to have an effect on the staff to know that if its up the middle the chances are a lot better this year than in the past that its an out.
its gotta give the pitchers a little more leeway here and there

that is what i was hoping for this year with CD
i think he’s a legitimate 40+ HR guy with enough ABs. Im not sure if he’ll hit above 250 or so this year even if he doesnt strike out as much just b/c he’s dug himself in a hole number’s wise. Although, in the future I definitely see him being a .270-.280 hitter with a .330 OB% and over around a .550 SLG%… I hope he can start showing some of that this year and improve his overall #’s next year into that range

Better to have him

interesting idea
his pitch to contact, groundballin’ ways would be a pretty good fit here. I think he has 3 arb seasons left as well.
Doctor please. Some more of these.
if you put together a package of
golson/boggs/murphy, mad max and someone like beavan do you think theyd bite? they need a young catcher and outfield is pretty old…
It wouldn't take all that
Given what he did in 2008 and so far this year.
by Adam J. Morris on May 10, 2009 4:15 PM CDT up reply actions
He's owed 5 million for this season
And has 2 arbitration years left after this year.
If you assume $7 million and $9 million for those arb years (which might be conservative), he’s not much of a bargain.
In fact, if it were anyone other than the Yanks he played for, I’d wager he’d be non-tendered after this season.
by Adam J. Morris on May 10, 2009 4:15 PM CDT up reply actions
I would love to see what
mike maddux could do with him though. If you could get him for cheap and fix him, what a steal….
Although, I dont really know why we are talking about this. Arent we all very very pleased with our pitchers performance thus far, and the future that we all see laid out?
I'd like to take a flier on him
I wouldn’t do it for Max + Beavan + someone else, and pay $16 million for 2009-10 for the privilege.
by Adam J. Morris on May 10, 2009 4:25 PM CDT up reply actions
I don't understand why you'd make that deal
You are giving up a pretty well regarding catching prospect for a not-cheap pitcher who has been awful this year after regressing last year and who has had injury issues.
I don’t see the point.

FIPs question
Fielding Independent Pitching
(HR*13(BBHBP-IBB)3-K2)/IP
why is 13 the multiplier for HR’s just curious.
i understand what fip is trying to do but am trying to get a full grasp of the equation.
mormons stole me and held me against my will with Oklahoma beer and 12+ hour work days.
I think it's a run value thing
A HR is worth 13/3 times of a walk/HBP in terms of runs. For example, if a walk is worth 0.3 runs, then a HR is worth 1.3 runs on average.
that makes sense
if any of the MBA numbers crunching baseball dork has something else, im always ears on trying to get a better grip on details like this.
its one thing to just accept stats and numbers as gospel, i just try my best to study the formulas to figure there flaws and their strengths so as to best understand them. Im sure a lot of u guys grasp this stuff better than i do.
mormons stole me and held me against my will with Oklahoma beer and 12+ hour work days.
It's an empirical equation.
They derived it by a regression analysis, so it’s just the number that comes up from the process. Telegraph gave it a nice intuitive meaning.

I don't get that "you're the best as long as your the champ" idiocy.
I do think the Angels are the best team in the division, but the Royals announcer just said — as his entire argument — it’s because you can’t look at anyone else until the champ is dethroned.
So is there any point to the discussion, then? One team is the best until the end of the season, and then the new team is the best until the end of the next season. No amount of anything else makes a difference?
Were the Marlins the best team in the NL through most of 1998?

which was actually worse than Hambone’s -11.2. Only worse CF according to that metric were Lastings Milledge and gold glover Nate McLouth.

I know.
He’s more of a RF now.
He’s a CF like Derek Jeter is a SS. (And judging by his comments, Torri still thinks he’s the best CF in the league, which is funny to this Ranger fan.)
But he’s still hitting and he’s a great clubhouse guy. It’s not like he’s a below replacement level player who’s hurting his team just by being on the field like Zito or Silva or something was my point.
Good players being paid like they’re great is obviously not a good thing, but it’s bad players being paid like they’re great that really cripple a franchise.

I think ESPN felt obligated
to mention the Rangers because they are leading the AL West. So Winfield got up there and spouted a few cliches and misconceptions about the Rangers and that was it. Simply laziness on their part.

Looks like we’ll have Harrison, Millwood, and Padilla against the Halos next wkend. I’m already getting pumped for that series.
Doctor please. Some more of these.
if the Angels don't skip anybody
the pitching matchups should be
Harrison vs Palmer (3-0, 3.06)
Millwood vs Saunders (5-1, 2.66)
Padilla vs Loux (2-2, 4.64)
Doctor please. Some more of these.
After this past two times
through the rotation I like our chances.

I think that Lackey is on schedule to join them over the weekend. They were looking at either two or three rehab starts for him. Today was his second, but he threw a fair amount of pitches, and given that we are maybe their best competition in the division, seems like they’d go ahead and insert him. The only bad thing would be that we really torched him last year.

I like the Padilla match-up the best
Palmer is due for a bit of a beating or at least another 4 ER game. Its tough to see Harrison reverting back to his early season form against the Angels offense.
The Millwood/Saunders match-up is going to be a loss. I have a feeling Millwood will pitch another great game and Saunders will be very hittable, yet we won’t score more than a run against him.
There is no reason we shouldn’t win the Padilla/Loux game.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Yes, your right
We will have Millwood, Padilla, and Feldman going for us.
Doctor please. Some more of these.
Holly May on MLB Tonight: "To hitters-friendly Ballpark in Arlington we go!"
The media is so obsessed with reminding everyone we play in a hitters park they need to bring it up when we’re not even playing there.
The new Comiskey
has consistently been more hitter friendly than RBiA, yet it doesn’t seem to be brought up nearly as often in that context.
Doctor please. Some more of these.
Yup.
Using On Baseball’s additive version of Patriots’ park factors, the Rangers are only 6th among hitters parks.
By runs added above average per PA:
1) Colorado 7.6
2) Arizona 4.2
3) Boston 3.4
3) Chicago 3.4
3) Chicago 3.4
6) Texas 2.5
The Rangers do definitely play in a hitters park. It’s a full R/PA ahead of the next most offensive parks (Philly and Toronto), and the exact opposite of the second most pitcher friendly park (Safeco).
The problem is, it’s pretty significantly behind the Cubs, White Sox and precious Red Sox, but they all get a free pass from that constant, annoying asterisk. It’s because we’ve had a combination of A) bad pitching and B) great hitting, so everyone is just lazy, looks at the raw numbers, and decides that’s all we need to see. No actual research required!
2.5 R/PA would require me pitching

I haven't watched it since
the ’Satan’s little helper’ episode. I liked the Simpsons shorts on the Tracy Ullman show better.
Wow, Royals.
Thanks for nothing, you rat fucking bastards. Jamey Wright, may you wind up cleaning toilets at interstate rest stops.
Aikman and Bradshaw?
Please. They are in the same league as Trent Dilfer and Jim McMahon as QBs who were taken to the SB by great Defenses and great Running Games.

I have all the confidence in the world
that John Koronka will pitch a decent game. I was a fan of the Koronkadonk.

down 3-1 going back to Boston and they’re done.

You think the Rangers trade Blalock
if they are leading or in contention for the AL West at the ASB? Who would become the DH?
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
Andruw Jones,
obviously.
Who else?

AJ?
Really? I am still waiting for the real Andruw Jones to stand up.
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
We've seen the real Hank Blalock
so we know if we hold on to him, he will get injured and be out half the year, or will be completely useless the 2nd half of the season. He has about a half decade of history.
I have as much or more confidence in AJ as I do in Blalock.
