Evan Grant talks with Brandon McCarthy
McCarthy sounds a little tired of talking about John Danks. I thought that this was an interesting comment, though:
The game of baseball is all about putting the past behind you and moving forward, and with this trade, it’s exactly what I’ve done. I went through a period of shock followed by being the new kid in class, and finally just being another guy on the team. Now it feels like the trade never happened and I couldn’t be happier with where I’m at.

what's with the blue links?

Don't you know that the Rangers win if we have our blue links on?

I wonder if BMac feels any heat
from Holland.
He used to have a huge cushion with Benson, Harrison and Padilla pitching like crap. However, with Benson in the bullpen, and Feldman pitching great as a starter, and with Harrison channeling Koufax since the mysterious mound meeting with Maddux, and Padilla putting together 2 big bullpen saving starts, BMac is getting closer to the hot seat.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see Holland moved to starter by the July/August timeframe. The only question is whose spot is he going to take?

hopefully by july or so
we’ve traded away padilla, but I would think Holland would be in the rotation in June sometime.
McCarthy may be best suited for the pen if these trends continue, but he has not been terrible by any means.

I'd have no problem
with him being in the bullpen all of May and June. I always thought the bullpen was the best way to get adjusted to MLB.
I think a few months in the bullpen to see the hitters, followed by a start in the minors to stretch out if necessary is a good way to be brought up. In the bullpen you can concentrate on your best stuff, and if its a blowout, you can use your variety.

either way
I am interested to see how Holland performs in the rotation, and if it’s june or july, it makes no difference to me.

I don’t think he gets traded as long as we are anywhere close to first place.
Let’s not get overly excited about the past few weeks. We will need more than five starters.

Disagree
If anything i think itd be Feldman
He is the one that started in the bullpen and i think management quite simply sees him as more of a bullpen guy. That is also why Holland usually pitches the same day he does.
I think McCarthy is safe for a while unless he just really struggles
I hope they don't think of him
as a bullpen guy.
He’s looked much better as a starter than reliever the last couple of years. He’s been completely ineffective out of the pen, and league average as a starter.

One issue
It seems that he absolutely cant go beyond 6 innings at this time
I like both as starters at this point to be honest
unless one gives you a reason to replace them with holland id personally just leave him in the pen for a while
i think we all know that some of the starters will eventually hit a dead arm period and go to the DL….lets just hope it isnt worse than a simple dead arm period that removes some of the starters
in an ideal world…there will be no reason to remove any of the starters from their current roles
He can easily go beyond 6 innings
The Rangers just have to leave him in games past the 6th inning when he is only at 80 pitches

Actually, I sent Evan a question for the McCarthy Blogiary (why not Bliary) wondering if McCarthy had advice
for Holland, considering they have some similarities in their development path. Both started out in the majors at a young age and as a reliever. Well, McCarthy was moved to the bullpen after 1/3 of a season in the rotation. I wonder if Holland has asked him for any tips.
I didn’t think about the possibility that McCarthy could be concerned about sharing too much to a young guy that could take his spot. McCarthy doesn’t seem like the type who would be concerned about it. You never know till you ask, though.

I was always assuming a June promotion to the rotation
but if we keep winning, and nobody’s hurt, why make the move? we DO need him in the pen more than the rotation at this point…

I don't think the decision will be that hard
someone in the rotation now is going to falter or get hurt by then and Holland will slide into that spot and stay there.

What I meant was...
I’d rather just hear about how well Andrus or Feliz or Harrison or Jones or Salty is doing rather than, “Hey look, Danks has a 0.01 ERA and 50 wins on the season! The Rangers suck!”
My favorite line
I hate math.
Be great if some DMN commenter took that as an anti-SABRmetric battlecry.
Of course, most DMN commenters hate McCarthy, so it would probably just come down to saying McCarthy hates using math the figure out when his period is on the way in.

Holland stays in bullpen
As long as we are in contention, I don’t see a reason to bust up the rotation while it is performing. Until we get another LH reliever, I’m keeping Holland in that role.
Same Crap Different Day
Evan Grant still sucks, what a Ranger mouth piece he is. Blah Blah, Blah……..
Don't you think
That without his work for the Observer, press coverage would be less than you’d want to see? I’d think any reportorial (or beat) source is better than not having it. Not everyone is Joe Posnanski, but Grant gives his full best effort at finding and presenting Ranger stuff IMO.

“Too bad drinking scotch isn’t a paying job or Kenny’s dad would be a millionare!”
i was a big EG critic at the DMN but
since his move to Dmag, his work has gotten better and better. Definitely think EG is doing a good job over there, also says a lot about why newspapers are failing

Agreed
The format is more open, so EG can spread his wings a little more. There’s only so much a beat reporter can do. Now, as a columnist/reporter/whatever, we get to see a little more of EG’s personality and the issues he feels are important. I like it.
That's why they call them business sox
Well
so far, its not like any of the Rangers “overabundance” of catchers seems to be ready to step up and take charge. It looks pretty wide open to whoever wants it.

I think salty has done a pretty good job
Mostly because he has stepped up defensively
But even if we somehow do need a catcher, thats funny within itself.
the preceding post was a great success.
I know...
DJ, you come off looking like a jackass this time bud
the guy is starting to hit the ball solid, especially considering his slow start and his D has been very good as well, which is arguably the more important aspect when considering his development
0 PBs, 4 of 7 CS
He is a definitive starter at this point
furthermore, no matter how you look at it, C is not a “organizational need”
the point he made is that the starters arent' really battling to the top
and at this point you can only tell that salty is marginally better than teagarden overall
other than pitching, catcher has to be one of the absolute toughest positions to become at ease at in the majors
im really thinking it takes multiple seasons just to get used to the league as a catcher, whereas other positions are much more instinctual and easier at adjusting.
i guess im one of the guys who sees the kid doing well with the staff so far, working pitches and making solid contact. i dunno what else i really want from a hitter besides him hitting like piazza and fielding like pudge, but that doesnt exist on earth and likely never will. til then, salty is good enough for me.

Hicks is on there! but not exactly great analysis. They basically critique him on things that are the domain of the GM and he otherwise comes off as a free spending owner. Still, read it for the writeups of the other owners. They got #1 right.

Well
I do think that at times we bash Hicks too much
i think we do have to give him credit for spending money on the Amateur Draft and the Latin area. We could easily be like other teams out there (Astros) and avoid big names just so we dont spend money there.
I dont think any of us should be thrilled about him by any stretch but i do think there are positive aspects that may get overlooked at times.

Then Start Pitching Better
No one will remember the trade if McCarthy starts pitching like he’s capable. Danks is a stud, pure and simple, and Rangers fans, so used to having their pitching serve as the punchline for MLB, will be utterly ecstatic if he has a 4.25 ERA and throws 180 innings/year.
