Sort of a shortened version of "this is what I'm talking about."

Sort of like how “hear, hear” is short for “hear, all ye good people, hear what this brilliant and eloquent speaker has to say,” except a lot more annoying.

and i switched from xp. definitely worth the switch from vista. much faster performance

by ab03 on May 12, 2009 10:07 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm on XP as well

Didn’t want to switch to Vista because I don’t like an OS that takes up 600 megs of RAM at idle and because Vista offered me no new feature I actually needed (I switched from 2000 to XP to get hyperthreading support for my pentium 4 processor).

by Inkara1 on May 12, 2009 10:09 PM CDT up reply actions

Any problems going from an XP computer to it?

I’m going to need to reinstall my OS sometime soon anyways.

by Gdawg on May 12, 2009 10:09 PM CDT up reply actions

nope

i actually bugged knockoutking about the install but it was extremely painless. I went through a lot of trouble backing stuff up and it actually kept my hard drive in tact and my old windows folder still there (which i later deleted).

I only have 1GB of RAM too. can be slower than XP at times but I also dont’ use my computer for anything interesting

by ab03 on May 12, 2009 10:12 PM CDT up reply actions

My current setup is 4 1/2 years old

I’m considering building something new just because 4 1/2 years is really, really pushing the record for longest time I’ve gone between major upgrades (to me, stuff like a new DVD burner is minor and a new motherboard/processor is major). My old record was just under three years. So when I finally do get to build something new, I might want to have a clean install of Windows 7 with it.

by Inkara1 on May 12, 2009 10:13 PM CDT up reply actions

that is probably a must

i’m thinking this won’t be an xp/vista situation where both OS’s hang around about even. Windows 7 is basically a better implemented version of vista and enough of a reason for people to make the switch

by ab03 on May 12, 2009 10:15 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm sure a P4 2.8 GHz with 2 gigs of RAM would have the cajones to run Windows 7

But if I do get a quad-core processor, 10,000-RPM SATA drive, lots of gigs of RAM, etc. then I’m thinking that would be a good time to up the OS as well.

Problem being replacing some of the software I’ve had for like a decade that I don’t know where my install files are anymore.

Maybe I could get used to the GIMP for making my GDT images… :D

by Inkara1 on May 12, 2009 10:18 PM CDT up reply actions

not that i condone this in any way

but it’s so nice to have torrents as a backup for missing install files. i freaking bought microsoft office but i dont’ know where that CD is anymore

by ab03 on May 12, 2009 10:23 PM CDT up reply actions

If you have a license you have a license

Nothing wrong with downloading them as far as I know.

by Black Francis on May 12, 2009 10:24 PM CDT up reply actions

ok

I don’t have a license for everything :)

But I feel like engaging in the whole torrent thing is still wrong, even if you don’t ahve a license. You are hosting that file for lots of people witthout licenses. whatever. splitting hairs i guess.

by ab03 on May 12, 2009 10:33 PM CDT up reply actions

or

lets say i upgraded my student version of office to the ultimate super awesome one

by ab03 on May 12, 2009 10:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah

I don’t download software, but if I did I wouldn’t feel bad if it were MS, Adobe, or some other huge company that has people over a barrel and overcharges like crazy. Small software companies are different.

That’s my conscience, anyway.

Forgot that you upload torrents while you’re downloading them. There are other places to download only but you have to be very careful.

by Black Francis on May 12, 2009 10:36 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm just glad the days of trying to download off a ratio server on dial-up are over

Nothing sucked like waiting like 20 minutes to upload one song to the ratio server, then it would suddenly “lose” the connection and you’d reconnect and have to upload another song before you could download. Rinse and repeat.

by Inkara1 on May 12, 2009 10:39 PM CDT up reply actions

its not a miracle or anything, but as far as typical OS upgrades go this is a good one.

and extra features, something new. it’s what we kids do

by ab03 on May 13, 2009 8:51 AM CDT up reply actions

What extra features?

I’ll probably get 7 on my next computer, but upgrading to a new OS is usually just a pain to get all the drivers working with minimal payoff.

4/10/09 - Josh Hamilton's last walk.

by DJCahill on May 13, 2009 8:55 AM CDT up reply actions

i didn't have any driver issues or incompatible programs

features: nothing spectacular. some cool UI design improvements. stuff that was in vista (like window preview) that has either added functionality or actually runs without your computer crashing.

some others, offhand:

-better dual monitor recognition

-better sidebar implementation

-better handling of my music/my videos files (more like a pointer instead of separate folder)

-better wifi control center (than vista, and probably XP)

Nothing that you have to upgrade for but I wasnt’ doing anything on a saturday and sans backup, the process took 1 hour with very little installing that had to be done.

Not that you should complain. . .

But if you’re looking for anything, the pitching is below-average (the fielding is spectacular), and the plate discipline is disturbing.

Neither is a sure bet to sink the team, though.

True

It’s just that they also happen to be some of the most perpetually sardonic, egotistical and crass blogs around. Which makes them hilariously epic at times, but also hard to tolerate in prolonged dosages.

Not that the same can’t be said for LSB to a certain degree some days (okay… most days), but we’ve still got ways to go before we get to the level of that patented LL brashness. 2-3 more years of futility though and I could definitely see us reaching that plateu around here… by that time though, LL would likely have crossed over into the land of the damned.

At that same impressionable age, everyone around me was constantly cursing the Mavericks. WHen I was little, I interpreted that to mean following the Mavericks was not cool.

Then I moved to New Mexico, where there are no teams, and as I started to get in to basketball, my older brother’s Lakers love wore off on me. Plus, I was at that age where SI for Kids dedicated every other issue to Kobe Bryant.

Yeah

My tics are mostly in my hands and feet now- I have two fairly persistent ones in my left thumb and left foot at the moment. I get a sniffing/eyeblinking one when I’m really stressed out.

Fortunately, mine’s fairly mild- it sounds like yours is as well- so it’s pretty easy to hide.

How did you find out you had it? I came across an article on Jim Eisenreich my junior year of college, and thought, “so this is what’s been wrong with me all these years!” A trip to a neurologist a couple weeks later confirmed it.

Third-grade teacher wondered about it

Then I saw a specialist or two, then ended up seeing Dr. Cummings (not sure the first name) at the City of Hope for the actual diagnosis when I was in fifth grade. At that point, they put me on Catapres TTS-1 skin patches to control the tics. I eventually moved up to TTS-2 for the increased dosage, but in all honesty it really didn’t make much difference other than I’d get asked how the quitting smoking is going in the locker room. Also, chlorinated water in a swimming pool takes the patch off my skin in a minute or two. I eventually went off the patch because I couldn’t be on my parents’ insurance anymore and couldn’t afford the patch on my own. I didn’t notice much, if any, increase in the tics.
