Worried about JD & the roster...
Ok, we all know the Rangers have played above expectations thus far and that's great! With that said..I worry that come July if this team is in 1st place or a few games back that JD and his staff will make a stupid 3 month rent-a-player trade and give up some of our young prospects. I see it like this, the Rangers this year have a 0% chance at winning the WS. But next year, that chance goes up to about 20% and then 50% by 2011 and so forth. Point being, I think the Rangers should sign Ben Sheets after the ASB and that can count as the "missing piece" for this years club making a playoff push. If they can find a nice and young bullpen arm for cheap (lower level, low ceiling prospect) then I'm all for it.
By the end of this year, this club will be in a golden position. They will have Padilla, Blalock, Byrd, everyday Eddie, and possibly Millwood coming off the books (I think Milly is back next year)
With that money, they can go out and try to land a free agent bullpen arm or two and then fill the other gaps from within. You replace Blalock with CD and bring up Smoak to take over 1B. You replace Byrd with Beltre. You replace Padilla with Sheets.
I really hope JD and company hold out on making any trades and risking the future of this club for a shot this year. I don't trust JD or Hicks much. I think next year's club will be ready to contend and possibly be the AL west favorites coming out of Spring Training.
SP
Sheets
Millwood
Holland
McCarthy
Harrison
and you'll have Hurley, Feliz, Hunter, etc ready to come up during the season or fill in for any injuries.
Lineup
CF-Beltre
RF-Hamilton
LF-Cruz
SS-Andrus
3B-Young
2B-Kinsler
1B-Smoak
C-Salty/Teagarden
DH-Davis/MaxRam
Please don't do anything stupid JD!

… Seriously?
Also, I hate to rehash arguments, but how do you justify wanting to move Davis off of first when his defense there has been all-Universe?

Well
There are a lot of flaws with your logic here. First, I would remind you that an 86 win Cardinals team won the WS a couple seasons ago. If the Rangers make the playoffs then they have a chance to win the WS. Second, there is no way Engel Beltre starts in CF next season. Third, assuming Ben Sheets will still be a #1 after all this is far from certain. Fourth, the last time the Rangers were buyers they made a pretty solid trade, picking up Carlos Lee and Nelson Cruz for Francisco Cordero, Laynce Nix and Kevin Mench.
As I said, there are a few flaws here.

Yep
I think the team is committed to the future and wouldn’t trade what it considers to be its best talent just to get a rental. The Carlos Lee deal was a good example of a direction they may go in.
But really it’s way too early to say. I mean if they really are legitimate contenders but lack a piece or two in late July, maybe you do make a deal that ALL of us will bitch about. I don’t know. This team would have to look awfully good in July for them to do that, though. In that case the deal could actually work. You may lose talent, but can you imagine what it would be like to watch the Rangers playing games 6 and 7 of the ALCS? Can we really say that’s a bad thing even if they were to lose? I mean even a taste of the playoffs should make the young players very hungry for more.
I don’t anticipate that, though. Still a skeptic, but it’s way too early to entertain these kinds of thoughts even if one is an optimist, in my opinion.

I really hope that the lineup you mentioned is not the actual lineup you would fill out
andrus batting clean up? kinsler 6th?

yes
I apologize, I meant Borbon. I just can’t wait for beltre to get here though. lol
and moving Davis off first is natural as even the Scouts will tell you that Smoak is a better defender and overall player.
The lineup I posted is in no particular order. It was just the 9 men but not the order of which they will hit.

Which Scouts you speak of, who are so highly thought of yet shall not be named?

This Year
If we are in first place at the deadline or our playoff chances look legitimate, I have no problem being a buyer.
Just because you are a buyer doesn’t mean you just have to rent a player. JD rented Carlos Lee and also added Nelson Cruz in the deal. I would be willing to make a deal on a bullpen arm that will be here a few years.
Also you have to realize that prospects are not only good for growing your own players, but they are also good poker chips….for instance where are Duran, Arias, and Vallejo going to play on this team over the next few years? Are we going to waste one as a utility IF? What about having Smoak/Max/Davis/Salty/Teagarden? Someone will have to go in that mix….there isn’t enough positions for all of them.
At some point if you have a great farm system that is making tons of major leaguers you will have to deal some of them….you just have to make the right deal.

Low level, low ceiling prospect
The Rangers should trade all of these that they have for a ‘nice and young bullpen arm’.
Also, if the Rangers or any team is listed in Vegas as 1-1 to win the World Series (50%), place all of the money that you can possibly find against them.
Not even sure why I read this post after noticing who started it.

Remember...
The Rangers are going to be in a 40 man crunch here pretty soon… I am really beginning to think that a trade is somewhat necessary. Log jams at catcher, middle infield, and back of the rotation starters. I guess it is a great problem to have though. Sending some of those guys for younger prospects wouldn’t be a bad idea, just to keep the rule 5 less interesting.

performance has a way of working that out for you, I’m not terribly worried about it.

IF we are buyers...
It’s not like we’d be going for a big bat. It would almost certainly be a bullpen piece or 5th starter which wouldn’t break the bank so why not?
by slimshadty12 on May 14, 2009 11:20 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I'm guessing
the Rangers would trade Poveda or Lemon or someone like that, if anyone at all. J.D.‘s career is pretty much hinged on the farm bearing fruit. I wouldn’t bet on him trading away any of the more high profile pieces. I would trade either of those guys for Juan Cruz, when KC eventually drops into last place.

Oh yeah
Well in that case, they wont need Cruz or Mahay. If HIllman can get a hold of a few blind orphaned amputee children, he can teach them to pitch, in addition to curing their blindness and finding them parents. Repent.
I used to be a KTCU dj too, btw — 10 years ago. Now I only listen to music made 10 years ago, back when music was good. Sigh. I’m old.
