Wow, that was cool.
I do not give up on this team any night now. I don’t think they’re quite a division winner to be feared yet, but they have as good a chance as any of the other three wannabes.

The Angles scare the buh-jesus out of me, what with how they've kept they've kept themselves afloat sans Lackey/Ervin/Vladdy, and now that they're getting some of those guys back real soon.
But right now I don’t care.
I’m giddy.
Dear god did I need that ending after all time we spent wasting offensive opportunities.

If you forced me, I'd pick the Angels to win the division.
And I’m sure I don’t have to espouse the logical reasons for that. Everyone gets them.
But a good chance is better than nothing, and just getting to watch important games in September would be enough. Sure, if we don’t win those losses will burn my soul, but in the long run it will go down as a happy season.
And it's got to be good for the kids
the Rangers are going to be depending on for years to come ~ even if this year isn’t one of those years quite yet.
i would like to see them up close
(and maybe check a few boxscores) before i make a decision. but i think you’re right

Ha. Seems like it should be first win
For CJ in his career besides those blown saves turned into 2+ run walkoff “wins” for him last year.

Pretty good – created real tension describing Ichiro’s effort to catch the ball – then … it’s off the wall!
What did Nadel say?
B/c to me it looked like Ichiro was walking to that sonuvabitch…like he thought it was gone or something…kinda weird.

was working while he pitched but his line looks a little like Helling, couple of homers, 7 k’s 7 IP.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
3 homers will hurt you
but everything else is very good from the start
furthermore, i think ill take 7 innings and 4 runs pretty much every night from the starter, especially bmac
well
if he’s the onyl starter doing it, then that is fine. i am hoping that he did that with bad stuff, not his usual stuff
It's fine for a 5th starter.
But not “every night from the starter.” And it’s still disappointing for that to be considered acceptable from McCarthy, no matter how low expectations have fallen.
Grr...
Yeah but…

Its not one of the top 5 shows of all time or whatever but its relatively good.

ABC blew it

I’ve actually never seen ‘Lost’, I’m just pissed about the ‘Life on Mars’ cancellation.
"I saw your act, just didn't make it for me. Just a lot of fluff."
Yeah I did here fairly good things about it
Never did watch it though. But I did see plenty of commercials for it, can’t blame them if it just didn’t get the ratings.
Its fox thats known for screwing with a program by changing the timeslot, days, episode order even and such.
But yeah.. lots of good shows just don’t find an audience for one reason or another. Meanwhile there are dozens of cookie cutter cop shows that don’t even try to be different and just mysteriously get these huge ratings.
the preceding post was a great success.
You should rent up the first season in DVD.
It’s very good.
The show has some very obvious flaws (especially in late season 2 and in season 3), but it more than makes up for them.
I’ve never seen Life on Mars. I’ll have to check it out. Though you can’t really blame them for canceling it. It mustv’e cost a pretty penny with that cast and all the period shit they had to use. If it wasn’t killing in the ratings seems like it’d be hard to turn a profit on a show like that.

Yes...
I believe now, if they didn’t have it planned out from early in the first season, they figured out how they’d get from point A to point B somewhere in the second season. That’s when the growing pains started, but man, once they got focused on how to get to the ending and were given a specific number of episodes to get there, the results have been spectacular.
Like any good LOST episode, my mind is just racing thinking about where they’re going with this. Couple that with a great Rangers win, first place, and the most games above .500 of the season and I can’t imagine I’ll sleep well tonight.
by ghostofErikThompson on May 14, 2009 2:52 AM CDT up reply actions
Listening to some of them talk, they had a destination mind all along, even if the specifics of the journey weren't always set in stone.
I tend to believe them.
Too many moving parts to think it just sort of happened on the fly or that at some point they sat down and decided to formulate a master plan.

That is the ERT for 1 run and the #4 hitter. Higher for runners on 2nd and 3rd, 1 out than it is for 1st and 2nd, 0 outs.
I'd imagine you're right about scoring one run.
My point was that I wouldn’t play for one run in that situation.
really?
we’re the home team. we always have the advantage. and we were doing an extraordinary job of stranding runners all night. and it is andruw jones, not a real #4 hitter
Yup.
Maybe I need to think this through more, but given the state of the Rangers’ bullpen, the 1.5 ERT for runners on first and second and no outs, the fact that Jones hasn’t sucked balls this season (including in his last extra-innings AB against Seattle), and the admittedly low but nevertheless real chances of Murphy screwing up a bunt ~ I just don’t like the idea of playing for one run there.
Like I said, maybe I should think through it more.
Also, looking at the positional probability tables
for the situation and doing some quick math, there’s relatively little difference in the probability of a run scoring from a xx-/0 out situation with the cleanup hitter up and the sum of the weighted probabilities of Murphy executing a successful bunt (say, 95 percent of the time), making it xx/1 out with the #5 guy up, and Murphy failing to advance the runners (say, 5 percent of the time), making it xx/1 out with the same guy up.
And then when you consider the drop in overall ERT… I don’t know.
That actually reduces the probability of scoring one run.
One-run probability from the tables ab03 used, with:
Second & third, 1 out, #5 up: .672
Bases loaded, 1 out, #6 up: .668
Still higher than the .645 from above, but again, given the situation, I don’t think I give up the out.
All I know from what I remember Murphy failed pretty hard
last time he tried sac bunting.

I did think that Wash Screwed up by not PHing but not there
when he PH Nellie for Elvis, he shoulda PH Nellie for CD to start the inning off, we were facing a lefty and davis is lefty, he had K’d 2 times already and Elvis was 2-4 with a triple and every other out he had gotten was a hard hit ball that made the defense earn their outs…

I thought I heard Lewin say
tonight was Blalock’s first walk-off hit of his career, right?
"Yeah, like I had a chance there" - Lancaster batter, after striking out against Derek Holland
Lewin was incorrect many times over in saying that
Blalock has no fewer than three career walk-off hits: August 8th, 2005 vs. MIN (bases loaded infield single), September 17th, 2005 vs. SEA (RBI double into the right-center field gap that plated Mike Young, who executed a sensational evasive slide to avoid a tag at the plate) and April 25th, 2006 vs. OAK (RBI single up the middle).
Maybe he meant that it was his first walk-off hit in extra innings of his career? That’s the only thing I can come up with, but that isn’t what came out of his mouth.

.265/.333/.453
Neither can do that?
Blalock isn’t likely to take a one year deal, either.

So far
Of course, throughout his career, he’s been great early in the season, crap in the 2nd half.
And he’s still got an OBP below .300.
Do you give Blalock a multi-year deal this offseason, and just try to move Smoak and Max for whatever you can get?
by Adam J. Morris on May 13, 2009 11:21 PM CDT up reply actions
I would feel very comfortable making Hank my full-time DH
and if he’s healthy this year and is as productive as he appears to be, I’d have no problems making him a 3 year /$ 30 million offer.
Then I decide how I’m going to settle the Crush Davis/Smoak dilemma by trading one of them for the best arm I can find.
Then I decide which one of the three catchers I’m going to trade for the best arm I can find.
I want an experienced and talented hitter to be my DH.
Remember we have a small market payroll and lots of financial flexibility next year as well.

EG comments when Cruz PH for Elvis
10:16: Thoughts on Nelson Cruz pinch-hitting for Elvis Andrus here. Make ‘em quick thoughts.
10:29: Given that this is coming after the fact, I suppose it will come as second-guessing, but I’d like to think I was just giving you guys some time to discuss and myself some time to gather thoughts. But the decision to pinch hit Nelly Cruz doesn’t sit well in my tummy. First, manager Ron Washington has said that, until he proves otherwise, Elvis Andrus is going to hit with the game on the line. He’s doing nothing lately to prove otherwise. He entered the game hitting .272 and was 2-for-4 in the first nine innings. He beat out a double play relay that I don’t think anybdoy else on the team would have beaten out in another at-bat. He’s made 16 unproductive outs this season – 15 strikeouts and one double play ball. Cruz entered the at-bat with 33 such outs. And on top of it, if you are pinch hitting Cruz, you are hoping for a game-winning double at the least. Why leave a catcher at first base to run. He’s got virtually no shot to score on a double. You are going to be bringing Omar Vizquel into the game to play short in the 11th anyway. Why not have him run for Jarrod Saltalamacchia at first? Those are just my thoughts. And I had to spill ‘em.
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year

No mention of the great play by elvis as a web gem…..just no respect, darn it.
Don't know whats better
this win or the fact that by mid season all those spectacular plays Elvis makes could just seem routine. “Oh your short stop doesnt MAKE those plays? Elvis does.”
BTW
do you think rangers management should make it mandatory for Mac to be in the booth for the 5th inning if we have a lefty coming up to bat?
Hank went 1-6?
Totally missed that.
LMAO, way to pick your spot, Hank. If you’re going to have a sub-par night, the least you can do is make your one good moment come high-leverage.
well, it was against a lefty for much of the night
a few blips on the radar in the past couple years aside I know better than to expect anything out of him vs lefties anymore.
i still dislike his approach (although its been a little better lately) but theres no doubt the current hank can sitll mash a righty fastball with the best of them. or at least pretty well..
the preceding post was a great success.
Which is why I think he should get plenty of rest to make sure he stays healthy.
And those rest days should just happen to correspond with the days the other team’s starting pitcher throws using not his right hand.
