Yeah.  I'd prefer that the Rangers not do that top of the 9th nonsense again anytime soon.  That was a buzzkill.

Anyway, 7 games over .500 for the first time since June 20, 2005.

And I think Steve Busby just suggested that the Rangers aren't as good as the Angels because the Rangers let the Angels back into the game, or something like that.

“Never give a rookie the edge against veteran players”. OK he’s not an Angel fan, but when Holland had two down and was cruising the strike zone moved in to about a 70% box from the 100% box it should be.

And I hate having to rag on an otherwise good umpire.

The 9th does not matter.

What , we all think holland is bad now? That inning was a fluke and the umpire squeezed us.
We needed to win, and we won. Its a great day. We havn’t been this far over 500 in a LONG time.

the preceding post was a great success.

I think it's pretty clear

…that the umpiring was awful. I never usually complain about umpires. Maybe a call or two here and there but the ump made a mockery of his profession. Damn. No way the Angels are back in that game if balls and strikes are called.

We need

a non-ball throwing lefty in the worst way. Hinckley, Murray, Phillips, et all. Come on down, sirs.

Murray

had two walks in his inning today, and Hinckley was released by the Nationals because he couldn’t throw strikes (the final straw was a bases loaded walk). So I’m not sure if these guys are the answer.

Now Brian Moran…he could be the answer.

Hinckley hasn't had command problems coming up through the minors...

or his brief cup of coffee last year wtih the Nationals. If he could work out his mechanics at AAA, he could be a good addition.

The thing about the 100 percent win expectancy...

It’s not “100 percent chance of winning.” But in all the time they have data for, 100 percent of teams with a seven-run lead going into the top of the ninth inning won.

by Inkara1 on May 15, 2009 10:12 PM CDT reply actions

Plus that 100% wasn't likely truly 100%....

but rather something along the lines of 99.99999999999999%

Ron Washington...giving hope everywhere to the kids who eat lead paint chips of being a big league manager when they grow up since 2007.

by rangers85 on May 15, 2009 10:16 PM CDT up reply actions

At least 99.5%

Which means, if there are 200 games where a team has a 7 run lead in the 9th, 199 of them won.

by Adam J. Morris on May 15, 2009 10:17 PM CDT up reply actions

But that reinforces what I was trying to say

Which isn’t that we had a 100 percent chance of winning, but (rounded to) 100 percent of teams that have been in this situation ended up winning.

I really feel sorry for Dutch tonight.

Pitching after a migrane, doesn’t have his best fastball (didn’t seem so velo-wise) and then he gets squeezed to death by the ump.

Rough night for a rook.

CJ and O’day making things tougher than they needed to be though… they don’t get quite as much slack.

CJ question

In 2007 he was dominate at times with much better command of his FB. Last year (maybe in the winter on 07-08) he developed bone spurs in his elbow and tried to pitch through it. That had an effect on his command. He had surgery last fall to remove them. Is it possible that his surgery is effecting him like pitchers that undergo TJ surery? It takes a pitcher who has TJ surgery ~1yr to regain the command of their pitches.

DRays Bay is kind of the same way.

I think the fans of less popular teams tend to all gravitate towards one, central area (this is an exageration in a way, but you get the idea).

Yankees fans find Yankees news and Yankees fans everywhere. Rays fans find them on DRays Bay, and so they spend even more time there as they start to become e-buds with other Rays fans.

I think a good example a lot of us might understand is Cowboys vs. Rangers. I personally get sick of Cowboys news, and they’re probably the most important sporting entity to me in the world (I love the Rangers, but it’s not close). I have no trouble finding Cowboys info, I get enough on accident, or coming across Cowboys fans. I go to Blogging the Boys like once a month.

But I spend more time on Lone Star Ball than probably any where else on the internet, partly because before I found it, I wasn’t aware that there were any other Rangers fans.

I like the Rangers a ton, but they don’t dictate my emotions the way the Cowboys do. Partly because I like football a lot more than baseball.

If not for the fact that I’ve never seen the Rangers win a World Series, I would happily blow RBiA up with all inside if it would bring another trophy to Dallas. I obviously love the Rangers, but that’s where my priorities are.

And they’re probably both behind Cougars football and Basketball just because of how much more linked I am to the school I spent three years at than the city I haven’t lived in since I was 10.

My desire for quicker Rangers news actually led me here… I found the DMN blog when I was trying to get trading deadline news (Ithat’s the year Kip Wells was the big deadline pitching acquisition) and after being there for a little while, I followed the link there to LSB and my life has never been the same.

by Inkara1 on May 15, 2009 10:46 PM CDT up reply actions

I actually wonder if I like my Rangers fans being online more than being around me in every day life.

I find the sports fans from the interwebs are usually more intelligent than those I find in the real world. And if I was talking to people who liked my team and I wanted to be friends with, but they said stupid things, that would be hard.

by philkid3 on May 15, 2009 10:55 PM CDT up reply actions

I sometimes think that too

But after my trip to Texas for Opening Day, I admit I have casually looked for jobs to move back. I loved hanging out with Rachel, Lisa and the other people I met that weekend.

I mostly wear an all-black Fresno State hat when I wear a hat

It’s comfy and fits my head in a way that I like the look. Well, it used to be black… nine years of sun/sweat/dust/etc. have turned it more brown now.

I’d wear the Rangers hat more if I could find it, though, and it would be nice to have for when I go to Bakersfield to watch a game or something.

We are going to strike out

too often for my tastes, but our lineup is murderous. Davis went opposite field tonight which is a great sign, and Andruw freaking Jones looks like he is salivating at fastballs every time up. Can’t believe how well he looks at the plate after last year.

jes!

I thought the same thing looking at his eyes get huge when he saw that pitch he hit the homerun off of. It’s almost like he started the dugout party in his head while he was swinging.

If it was 2007

I’d say he looks good enough for our OF, but after watching Cruz, Murphy, Hamilton, Byrd, and Boggs these past couple of seasons (Hamilton only recently), I expect only the best out of our OF defense.

by Gdawg on May 16, 2009 12:05 AM CDT up reply actions

I think he's good enough to play the field now and then.

But — especially against lefties — I think the ideal is Byrd-Hamilton-Cruz and AJ at DH.

by philkid3 on May 16, 2009 12:11 AM CDT up reply actions

It just doesn't make sense to do it unless injuries force you to

With the emphasis on defense and obvious signs of it working, Jones in LF is a pretty significant hit to take. If he plays, bench Blalock and play him at DH.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Salty and Tea and minimizing one’s value (which I think we’ve done in TT’s case). I find myself comforted with both on the team and both contributing. Harrison has been worth more with Tea holding his hand than any pticher we could have traded for. TT may end up being our Mirabelli for Wakefield. And Salty’s defense is more than adequate thus far.

Add in a good team option for 2011, maybe have it vest with a certain number of IP. Its tough wondering who will need to be moved from the rotation, but Sheets is just too good to pass up. Worst case scenario is you trade Padilla/Millwood at the deadline for a decent haul while Holland is still working out of the bullpen.

That means nothing.

Sheets is from the area and Meister is the best orthopod in the area. So, it makes sense that is who he would go to. Taking care of the Rangers is only a small part of Meister’s practice.

Its part of it

He’s at the Ballpark, he had a deal in place with the Rangers before the physical, he’s a big Mike Maddux fan, and you are pretty much hearing that the Rangers are the only ones in on him (I think there is one other team rumored to be in). I’d be surprised if he ends up signing with someone else unless the Rangers just decided they didn’t want him in the end.

CJ’s ERA actually mostly looks worse than it actually is due to 1 really bad game…

Hollands ERA is what it is b/c of one really bad game

wait, i dont want to confuse you with logic

by Horns130 on May 16, 2009 1:58 AM CDT up reply actions

Man fuck

this isn’t DMN, a lot of folks here don’t even use ERA to evaluate pitchers.

On par, the thing that stands out with CJ is that he’s about 6 years older than Dutch, and he still can’t throw strikes with consistency. Seriously, he walked Juan Rivera today, that takes special talent at not throwing strikes. What’s more, he’s not exactly a K machine anymore, and he bounces breaking balls with alarming regularity.

So he’s a guy who throws hard, but can’t throw any of his 3-5 pitches for strikes. That’s not a good player. At the very least, Dutch can throw his FB for strikes. That’s the difference between the two. And the fact one is a really awesome prospect with a bright future and the other is a failed closer who seem to have concentration issues.

Fine

Holland is a very good pitcher…would never try to argue against that

i merely think it is funny the way people here act towards both pitchers

the attitudes towards each pitcher are essentially irrational, but in different directions

by Horns130 on May 16, 2009 1:57 AM CDT up reply actions

Beware the small sample size

Holland is new to the bigs and his ERA shot up by a few runs just tonight. He’s new and learning (and mowed down all the minor leagues… I saw a Holland start in A ball and he pwned the Visalia Oaks).

CJ has been around a few years and what’s been going on this year is a continuation of last year. We have a larger sample size of CJ Wilson cockpunches.

by Inkara1 on May 16, 2009 12:14 AM CDT up reply actions

Another good point.

Holland is on this team to develop in to one of the better starting pitchers in baseball and is likely worse now than he will be for a long time.

C.J. Wilson wasn’t good two years ago and was really bad last year and doesn’t have much upside. So even if they were equal so far this year, one is clearly more worthy of excitement.

To be fair

Tex is somewhat right…you are not supposed to run inside the line on that play

the runner did something that was technically illegal and if they had not recorded the out he probably wouldve been called out

that said, yeah, he still acted like a little bitch

by Horns130 on May 16, 2009 2:00 AM CDT up reply actions

There was no where for Gomez to run

because Tex straddled the entire baseline. Gomez had to run the way he did or he wouldn’t have touched the bag.

Bullshit

Tex was simply angling towards the play…thats just asinine

the only reason his glove strayed into the baseline was b/c of the errant throw

you need to watch the play again apparently

His leg

were straight up over the bag. His feet were actually across the entire 1B. The Twins broadcast replayed it 5 times and Bert Blyleven made a big deal of it. Trust me, I saw plenty of replays beatweed

I found it hilarious

that Carlos Gomez (all 150 pounds of him) was willing to kick Teixeira’s ass. Gomez had to be held back by 3 teammates and a 1B coach. Teix just kinda started walking backwards and never stopped until he was on the other side of 2B.

Edwin Jackson

Christ does that deal look terrible for the Rays right now.

by LiamP on May 16, 2009 12:31 AM CDT up reply actions

It looks like it might be kind of a change of scenery thing for Jackson

His slider has gotten better while in Detroit and with his fastball, he’s been looking great so far. Don’t know if his slider improves with Tampa Bay kind of like how Danks’ cutter most likely wouldn’t have existed here.

Of course Tampa Bay isn’t really helping with Joyce being in the minors for most of the season so far. Kapler’s a great guy but can’t hit righties and Gross can’t hit at all plus you have Burrell struggling to hit for more power than Juan Pierre while you have a slugging COF in the minors.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw

by Gdawg on May 16, 2009 12:46 AM CDT up reply actions

It's not so much Joyce as it is Sonnanstine/Niemann being pretty worthless so far.

Admittedly, they’re placeholders for Price/Davis, but I didn’t understand that deal when it happened and I especially don’t understand it now.

I’m really not sure how to check on it. Soriano played five games at DH here, and I was thinking Josh said he was 10 from the record. You could definitely be right, of course.

by philkid3 on May 16, 2009 2:51 AM CDT up reply actions

Soriano hit two home runs as a DH.

So that’s 62 home runs as a second baseman. Ian hit 63 and 64 as a Ranger tonight, all at second.

So unless I’m missing someone/thing else: congratulations, Ian!

dumbest move in recent history

sending D O’Day out to face his old team. The sidearm delivery is most effective against batters who have never seen it.

CJ stops the 9th inning meltdown, and still gets flak here which amazes me. Guess what, likelihood is FX2 is done, his arm is cooked. Better get used to supporting the guy that consecutively punched out Posada, A-Rod and Giambi last year.

so you think these guys watching him pitch from the field has

any effect on them seeing him for the first time from the batters box?

darren o’day isn’t exactly a crafty pitcher who gets in your mind and surprises you with an offspeed pitch in a fastball count. he is a sidearmed sinkerballer.

Jones/Byrd/Murph

Anyone else about ready to give jones a spot at left field on a regular basis?

I love his patience. We could use an infusion of OBP before blalock/davis’s power.

the preceding post was a great success.

by DShep on May 16, 2009 1:56 AM CDT reply actions

well

after a quick check of the stats I see his career obp is merely .340. I suppose if he goes back to hitting .250, as I guess the odds would suggest he will, that the walks won’t be enough to make his obp an asset.

still, for the short time I wouldn’t mind it. byrd’s hacking is just getting to me lately. 4 walks…

the preceding post was a great success.

by DShep on May 16, 2009 1:58 AM CDT up reply actions

Damnit

At this point i dont trust Jones’ D to play him everyday in the field

let him replace Blalock as the DH for a fair amount of the games and im good

by Horns130 on May 16, 2009 2:29 AM CDT up reply actions

blalock should never get another start vs a lefty, at least while jones is doing anything

but he still hits righties well enough to be in there regularly.

fwiw, jones’s LF defensive stats have been above average so far. the sample is obviously extremely small though and I would agree he has looked fairly poor out there.

not saying i’m going to call for wash to be fired if he doesn’t get in there, but im fairly intrigued.

the preceding post was a great success.

by DShep on May 16, 2009 2:37 AM CDT up reply actions

Ill trust my eyes

Jones is slow in the field…period, sample size is too small and i just dont completely trust defensive measures

i think it is easy enough for any knowledgeable baseball fan to use their eyes and come to legitimate conclusions about a players defensive abilities

these same measures claim cruz sucks if i recall correctly…cmon

lastly, i agree though, no reason for Blalock to play against a lefty

by Horns130 on May 16, 2009 4:24 AM CDT up reply actions

...no they don't, they claim cruz is above average.

you sound like you are shrugging it off completely. i think UZR has shown itself to generally agree with what informed people think over time, although yes right now for andruw its sample size. which i did directly say in the epost…

and there is more to defense than simple foot speed. jones didnt earn all those those earlier gold gloves because he was one of the fastest OFs around.

but again ultimately yes hes probably been below average in LF so far. i dont think its so bad it needs to be actively avoided though.

the preceding post was a great success.

Nor should you

he walked in two of Neftali’s runs before. But it’s good to see him get back on track, especially with Strop imploding in Frisco.

Also, Bakersfield’s Bullpen is really really awesome. There’s one guy with an ERA over 3, and that’s Ryan Tatsuko. Everyone else (Flores, Phillips, Young, Reed, Roark, Falcon) not only sport the coolest names of any unit in the Rangers system, but are striking folks out while allowing few hits and do a reasonable job of getting groundball outs. They’re really good.
