Nobody
change a single thing they’re doing. Please.
"I saw your act, just didn't make it for me. Just a lot of fluff."
i didn’t get all the hype Oakland was getting to start the year. They had 3 rookies pitchers they were counting on, and you can’t count on them to eat the type of innings that a veteran can in order to save your bullpen. That said, the A’s have had the most IP by their bullpen and it won’t improve as their young guns start to tire as the season drags on.

Losing Duke and having Holliday and Giambi struggle out of the gate really hurt 'em.
But, yah.
I don’t know why people thought they’d be good this year.
I thought perhaps they might make a run at .500 if some things broke right, though.

is it just me
or does it not make sense that we play Detroit 6 times in their home park before they play in Arlington, and we only have 3 games at home against them. Couldn’t there have been a 5-4 split. I just hate playing in Detroit, but I suppose we couldn’t ask for a better time to go there.

So beautiful
i know this is really premature but what is the biggest lead that the rangers have ever had in first place? Didnt they get like 8 games in one of their playoff years?
more than that
I seem to remember them being 10 or 11 up once.

Very interested in the next month...
The next month will be a huge measuring stick for this team…
Detroit (3 games) is a division leader and kicked our ass last time we were there… The Yankees (6 games) look to be hitting their stride and seems like they always own the Rangers… And you’ve got Boston (3), Toronto (4), and the Dodgers (3) all sitting above .500… And games against Oakland and Houston sprinkled in there somewhere as well…
Really excited to see what this team is made of over the next few weeks….
Agreed

Yeah, I don't know that I'm worried...
While I’ve bought into this team and their prospects going forward, I still don’t know how much I really expect this year…
I wouldn’t be terribly disappointed or surprised if they came back to earth some over the next month… But really, I think they’re more than capable of holding their own and showing people they really belong THIS YEAR…
If they continue to play the way they’ve played so far this month, I don’t think we’ve got much to worry about, even with the spike in games against more competitive teams…
My preceeding post was full of post-game machismo.
I had no inkling, idea, or belief that this team would perform as well as it has thus far. Honestly, I was hoping for .500 plus a few as a sign of growth going forward.
However, they have some kind of Mojo going for them…and I never doubt Mojo, or Jobu.

Meantime, in the what’s fair is fair department, it should be noted that over in Detroit on Sunday, former Ranger Armando Galarraga did not make it out of the first inning, surrendering four hits and five runs while walking three. Last year, as Galarraga was winning 13 games for the Tigers while Texas’ pitching struggled, he was being held up as just one more example of Texas general manager Jon Daniels’ failures.
This isn’t to say that Galarraga won’t come back strong or that the Rangers’ current pitching success will continue to this magnitude. Things change in this game, and they’ve seen plenty of that in Arlington.

Okay I'm sorry
but after patrolling around for a while, I’m tired of hearing one of the reasons the Rangers will flare out come August is because of the heat. I’m sorry, but I just don’t see that as a legitimate reason for the team to start struggling. Could someone explain this to me? Everyone claims the pitchers will fall apart due to the heat, but I just don’t understand how someone who plays once every 5 days will lose stamina, endurance, control, etc. solely due to the gametime temperature. Can someone explain this to me?

it's not far fetched
Go outside and dig a hole for three hours when it’s 70 degrees out. Then go back out in the middle of the summer when its 100 and dig for 3 hours. Compare the size of the two holes and how you feel afterwards.
I’m not saying that the pitchers will fall apart, but you seem to be asking why the heat is a factor and I’d think that anyone that has lived in Texas would know that without a doubt it is a factor when you are out there working in it.

The data is out there. That includes not only high temperature but temperature at different hours as well as the average relative humidity by hour. You can download it by weather station in comma delimited sets.
St. Louis is not hotter. Baltimore/DC is not hotter. Atlanta is not hotter. Houston is close, but is more humid and actually worse than here and that’s why they’ve played in a dome for 50 or whatever years.

Numbers do not lie
People make mistakes. Some things, like temperature and humidity are what they are, and can be measured very precisely.
In their particular case, I have lived in both places too. Baltimore, when it gets hot, gets really hot. At least as hot as it does here. But they have a week or two on end of genuinely pleasant days. When does the heat ever let up here? Ever? Once it gets going it never stops for anything. A line of thunderstorms move through and the sun comes out right after that and you’re in the world’s largest sauna. Much like HOU.
I’m not saying they’re lying. I’m saying they’re wrong.

While the temp may be higher in DFW
it stills feel much hotter in Houston.

No
but you still haven’t said a single thing to support your claim of Baltimore being hotter than Dallas.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
Yes. That's because of their smog and humidity.
And there’s not that much difference in the temperatures. When we’re 101 they’re 96. It’s worse there for sure.
by Black Francis on May 17, 2009 10:45 PM CDT up reply actions
Agreed
But Atlanta is just as hot and St. Louis in the summer time is just as hot and more humid.
2009 Texas Rangers: Why The Hell Not Us?--ghtd36 on May 13, 2009
That's not true either.
I’ve been to these places in the summer. You can also look it up at NOAA. Texas is in the middle of hell, right between the fucking desert and the subtropics. Cold fronts never make it here. The sun is brutal. The south wind keeps it humid. We’re lucky if it’s 80 degrees at 5am. At midnight it’s normally still well above 90.
These other places CAN get just as hot. I lived in DC, which is obviously very close to Baltimore. So I know what it’s like there. They have some really pleasant summer days but get their heat waves too.
by Black Francis on May 17, 2009 10:36 PM CDT up reply actions
I might buy the heat problem if the Rangers
didn’t play soooo many games at night.
95 degrees at night in July & August is not bad compared to what it’s like in the day.

No
But it’s deceptively bad and other teams playing aren’t having to deal with that shit, believe me. It cools off in other parts of the world when the sun goes down. Here it just dissipates very slowly.
by Black Francis on May 17, 2009 10:43 PM CDT up reply actions
I have family that live in both places
Yes St. Louis with it’s humidity is just as hot and Atlanta has almost the same climate as Arlington does.
2009 Texas Rangers: Why The Hell Not Us?--ghtd36 on May 13, 2009
I don't care who lives there
Data backs it up. Go to NOAA and see for yourself. You can see more information than you ever wanted to know.

Maybe somebody can tell me why the 2007 Rangers
pitched so well after they started that season 23-42.
My recollection is that team went something like 46-33 from mid June to early September and a big reason why was because of their pitching.
Don’t buy the bullshit about it being too hot in Texas because it’s not only a crutch, it’s an f’ing lie.

1998 may have been the hottest summer other than 1980
I can ever remember but it didn’t bother that Ranger team.
Bad teams (other than the 2007 Rangers) wilt in the heat.
Good teams overcome the heat.

I don't think the heat is the only reason why Rangers pitchers have sucked throughout the years
I think that it plays its part, but its not the sole reason and shouldn’t be used as an excuse.
Again, can we please put the Baltimore is as hot as Texas theory to rest then?
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
All I'm saying is it's hotter here
I’m not saying it necessarily has to affect performence. Again, as long as the players stay conditioned, hydrated, and avoid the long innings on defense it shouldn’t matter. They’re professional atheletes. If anyone can handle it they can.
So I don’t buy into it as an excuse. I’m just stating what the facts are.
And if the pitching sucks and they take 30 minutes to get through their half inning, yeah it’s going to drain the team. If they can stay away from that I don’t see why it would be a factor. If anything it would be an advantage because other teams wouldn’t be as acclimated to it.

If you don't buy into it as an excuse,

But I just saying I would rather have the dry heat here rather than deal with the Humid summer of St. Louis.
2009 Texas Rangers: Why The Hell Not Us?--ghtd36 on May 13, 2009
Those places aren't as hot as here.
They have days where it is or worse, but they have their shard of 82 degree days, too.
That said, the night games shouldn’t be a big problem as long as they stay hydrated and in good physical condition overall. Avoiding the big inning is important.

I mean historically
if we’re gonna talk about humid/hot areas such as ATL and BAL, is there any statistical discrepancy or correlation between statistical pitching categories and temperature? I’d be curious to find out.

Apparently the humidity was waaaaaay down in Baltimore
coincidentally, when Earl Weaver was there (1969-82) , in St.Louis throughout the 1960s as well (when Bob Gibson was plying his craft) and in Atlanta from 1991-2005 or somesuch.

For the record
the hottest I’ve ever felt a baseball game was August 2005, in NYC watching the Rangers play the Yankees.
It was 98 degrees with ungodly humidity and no wind….and it was a night game.
How’d the Yankees pitching staff cope with that much heat without folding?!?!?
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
by Josey Wales on May 17, 2009 11:08 PM CDT up reply actions
Because it's not like that all the time there
When NYC heats up it is hell on Earth. I agree. But it, like ATL, BAL, and to a lesser extent STL, just isn’t like that all the time.

BF
A lot of what you’re saying makes sense but why would both Ripkens lie?
In the summer the Rangers are here 7-10 days at a time (playing at night) and then go on the road to some place cooler.
The heat is a crutch for pitchers who suck.

They aren't lying
They are just wrong. It happens.

-The Outlaw
I don't know why the Ripkens would say what they did
All I can tell you as that I lived there and my experience was much different. The numbers you can find at NWS or NOAA. Same thing.
Like I said, much like NYC when it does get hot there it gets really hot. There’s no doubt about that. But it’s just not like that all the time and the nights for sure are cooler (except when they have a bad heat wave, then it’s kind of like here).
Here they start at 7 or 7:30. The sun doesn’t even go down until almost 9. Our high temps for the day are usually recorded at 5 or 6pm depending on the time of year. The humidity climbs as it cools off and keeps it hot here, much like a giant blanket. It’s just hotter here, believe me.
You’re right that we do find common ground in terms of it being a lousy excuse. While it’s probably a lot nicer to play in SD, that’s not where they play and it can be dealt with. It has been in the past, and the last two seasons they went on to play better as the season went along.
I simply take issue with anyone saying it’s as hot in BAL or DC or almost anywhere else, frankly, as it is here in Dallas. Because it’s not true. I don’t care who says it.
by Black Francis on May 17, 2009 11:23 PM CDT up reply actions
And maybe what they were trying to imply is that the heat takes
just as much out of you as a baseball player in Balitmore as it does in DFW.
We have to leave that door open.
I’ve been to Baltimore in August and it was a piece of cake compared to DFW but I was there for a weekend series and did play in The Show there for several summers.
If you’re in shape, climatized to the elements, hydrated and throw enough strikes, you can be a good pitcher any place, including Arlington.

poor analogy
Don’t really care for your analogy. Millwood, or any other pitcher, is not going to throw a game in April, become a couch potato for 3 months and then go pitch a game in July.
Yes the heat has an effect on the pitchers. I think it varies from game to game, start to start, pitcher to pitcher. Just like the reputation of the RBiA being a hitters haven is over blown, how the heat effect pitcher I think is also overblown.
I hate the Yankees. Especially when they hit a walkoff.
There's no reason to think...
that the starters will flare out because of the heat. It’s not like they are pitching every single night or that all of their starts will be in Texas in July and August. I guess someone could look up and see how many games that the average Rangers’ starter makes in Arlington during the months of July and August, but even without that, I’d say not many.
The reason that the Rangers haven’t had good starting pitching is because they haven’t had good pitchers.
minus points to me for not spelling
dumbass correctly.

Is there any other rookie that it could be?
There is no way that its Madrigal. I don’t think they’d have someone who isn’t on the ML team there.

umm
Madrigal got called up when Frankie went on the DL.
I hate the Yankees. Especially when they hit a walkoff.
Wasn't clear there
There is no way that’s Madrigal because he looks like he’s the same height as Harrison (Madrigal is listed as 4 inches shorter) and well, Madrigal’s kind of a hefty guy. And I don’t think they’d have someone who isn’t on the ML team there which means no Feliz (he’s in OKC anyways). So, if its not Davis, who is that mystery player?
