Engel Beltre monthly splits

Engel Beltre in April:  .178/.221/.267, 20 Ks in 90 ABs

Engel Beltre in May:  .333/.385/.438, 12 Ks in 48 ABs

Beltre's OPS is almost 350 points higher in May than in April, but he's striking out, walking, and hitting for power at the same rates in both months.

The difference is almost entirely in batting average...he's gone from having a ridiculously low BABIP in April to a ridiculously high BABIP in May.

I'm not sure what this means.

Per Lucas

Main has improved in May because of decrease in his BABIP allowed. And nothing much else.

What’s mostly changed for Main is the hit rate of balls in play, from an eye-popping .438 to a better-but-still-high .358. (BABIPs for the team and league are .340 and .334, respectively.)

Not sure what that means either.

Doesn't it mean..

..that he wasn’t that bad in the first place? Also, that his numbers should come down even more if all things continued to play out how they are currently?

by GhettoBear04 on May 18, 2009 2:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Probably

It just makes me think of Keynes using the phrase ‘animal spirits’ to describe an economy, like BABIP is some weird ghost floating around and making and breaking players’ offense. It’s only useful when you look at player vs. league, and yet players still can grossly under/outperform for long periods.

his numbers should come down even more if all things continued to play out how they are currently?

That I’m less convinced of…the BB rate needs to come down (but he had little difficulty with BBs last year).

It means...

…he was unlucky and bad early. Now he’s slightly unlucky and not as bad. But not good.

One thing I didn’t mention is that Main has a crazy-high BABIP on outfield flies in play (i.e., flies that leave the infield and aren’t homers). As in .530. Could be getting hit hard, could be back luck on where they drop, could be bad defense. Could be some of each.

Irrespective of all that, his BB/SO rates have been consistently poor. But we’re not even 1/4 through the season. Not worried yet.

The walk rate is nice

Not great, but its nice to see him taking more walks than last year while facing a tougher league.

I’m still wondering where the power is though. He’s in the Cal League. He should be doing much better than he was in Clinton.

I like that premise

Without seeing him play, which I like to do before yapping about “what he is or what he is capable of” from a physiological standpoint, the numbers indicate that he may be maturing in one aspect. That would be selectivity about what to swing at. His seing mechanics and bat control may not change much, he’ll still miss or not see certain pitches all that well (true of everyone except Pujols and Vlad) but he may be getting smarter about what to hack at.

And as "the next Juan Encarnacion"

I’d say that his value is maximized by trading him in about 1-2 years.

I love high ceiling guys. But if you think a guys potential is capped and other teams do not agree, then you have an opportunity for a big return on investment. The annals of recent baseball are littered with guys like Lastings Milledge and Felix Pie who are considered uber-prospect outfielders, the next Darryl Strawberry. If you have a Pie or Milledge, and you suspect that they are Pie or Milledge as opposed to actually Darryl Strawberry, then you need to trade him. Because toolsy, high ceiling OFers can net big returns before they start swinging and missing at the big league level. But once their weaknesses are obvious to everyone, their value is nil.

I don't think I would

since Andrus is just as good this year (so far) at a very young age and will be cheap for the next several years. Never mind the fact that if you’re going to make a trade this year, SS is the last position you’re looking to trade for.

Well I'd say no to that, only because of CASH considerations

Reyes is probably due to make a lot of money soon. Andrus is going to be cheap for a while. Elvis is playing solid D and hitting the ball. Think of how much Reyes is going to get soon, either in arbitration or contract. And I believe that Justin Smoak is just about untouchable now. Can someone enlighten me about Beltre…I’ve not heard of all of the Rangers prospects, I only know about the ones that are mentioned a lot in the home pages.

Young OF that we got in the Gagne deal w/Boston

Tons of potential but as you can see, not exactly realizing it

some analysts had been way too quick to make comparisons to griffey and/or other HOF outfielders

he probably has as much potential as any player we have simply put

by Horns130 on May 18, 2009 4:51 PM CDT up reply actions

He's the ultimate high risk-high reward player

Has all the tools, but is extremely raw. If he achieves his potential, scouts have compared him to a Griffey/young Bonds hitting for power, stealing bases, and playing plus center field defense. That said, the odds of him achieving that potential, as with most raw, high-ceiling guys, are extremely rare.

Still, an exciting, intriguing prospect to have in your system, the kind of prospect that you collect in quantity, because eventually one of them will put it all together. Then, in the words of Lee Corso, watch out!

Agreed

Its not that risky if all we gave up was Eric Gagne (post steroids). If he does pan out, then we get all the reward. Are most of the Ranger farm teams in and around Texas. I use to really keep up with the farm system when I was younger. I remember Gonzalez, Pudge, and Rusty coming up through the system, but its been a while since I followed the farm. Are the Tulsa Drillers still one of the affiliates?

by IanKinslerMVP on May 19, 2009 12:51 PM CDT up reply actions

The walk rate is encouraging

And it makes the less than desired slugging somewhat understandable. If hes being more patient and possibly passing up pitches he can slug in order to work counts better then thats fine.

Any word on how his defense has been? Is he playing more CF or a COF spot. I know in Bakersfield the CF isnt very big and last year we had Borbon playing almost right behind 2nd base to challenge him.

Sounds like the Beltre in Seattle

Lots of upside when he came in, but just ended up being a tease. Except for that one huge season with the Dodgers, he did very little to justify that contract that the Mariners gave him. Another player comes to mind when I think of busts, (besides Pamela Anderson) Raul Mondesi, that old Dodger outfielder who had a million tools, but ended up being a tool himself.

by IanKinslerMVP on May 18, 2009 3:07 PM CDT reply actions

if he had a career like Mondesi’s who had an OPS of 113l. Sub Mondesi’s great arm for Beltre’ s possible great range and you have a good starting CFer.

Mention Mondesi's name in L.A.

And everyone’s smile turns upside down…I’m telling you, Raul WAS sliced bread here in L.A. He couldn’t cut down his strikeouts and then he was traded away or something. I agree with you guys in that, he was a solid ball player, but people here in L.A. thought he was going to be the shit, and by that I mean the same type of expectations we have for someone like Smoak. As far as Adrian Beltre goes, I saw a lot of those games on TV, when he came in second in MVP balloting. The Dodgers must have known that he wasn’t going to repeat a year like that. I’m sure the Dodgers would have liked to have kept him but didn’t want to invest 9-10 million a year. That one great year though, seemed like he hit a homer every damn time he came to the plate, 48 I think it was. But alas, he only averaged about half that, which is good, but I think the Dodgers must have known that he performed like that on a contract year.

by IanKinslerMVP on May 19, 2009 12:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Not sure about this

“Except for that one huge season with the Dodgers, he did very little to justify that contract that the Mariners gave him.”

I don’t think you could claim that Adrian Beltre has been a bust for Seattle. he’s been a little above average for his position offensively (with the exception of this year), and he’s been excellent defensively. He’s also rarely injured. Not up to his peak season, but he’s a great thirdbaseman.

Yeah I guess you're right in a sense...

Considering how much we are paying Michael Young who should hit for more power and doesn’t. The first thing I noticed on these posts was that a lot of people say MY is overrated. I always thought otherwise. You see, this leads me to believe that, depending on where you are coming from (geographically) you have a different opinion about the player. You see, I used to see guys like Mondesi and Beltre on a daily basis and I saw all the little things they do wrong. But since I don’t get to see MY a lot, I look at HIS solid numbers and consider him underrated. I don’t know how a guy can get 200 hits a year and bat .300 all those years and be considered overrated. I do wish he hit for more power, like that 24 homer year he put up, but I think he’s a star that is underrated. I guess if you live in Texas, you see things a lot differently.

That straight fastball of his is getting tagged.

Did they jack with his development?

I forgot why he wasn’t left as a starter. He seems way out of whack.

Gagne for Gabbard/Beltre/Murphy

What other offers from other teams were on the table besides the one they got from the Red Sox?

by SHSUHorn on May 18, 2009 10:53 PM CDT reply actions

Rumors of a Yankee offer that may or may not have included Melky Cabrera or Ian Kennedy.

I’ve read rumor that we were offered a package involving one or the other and just plain liked the Sox offer better… and I’ve also read rumor that we asked for one or the other as the centerpiece and the Yanks balked.

It’s always hard to get a read on exactly who truly offered what since leaking that sort of shit after the fact behooves no one.

Here’s the only link I could find on the subject:

Supposedly anyway.

But if we had taken him, would we still have gotten Beltre?

David Murphy had a solid season last year

How do people in Texas feel about him…I mean if he didn’t get injured, he was a lock for 20 home runs and at least 90 runs batted in. I know he got off to a slow start but I think he’s been picking it up.
