Is it time to part ways with the 'Stros?

Before the start of this MLB season, I was eagerly anticipating the beginning of professional baseball. Every year, I go to the Astros homepage to check out the roster and see who the new guys are that I will be cheering for.

This year, I came to a realization. I do not care about the players on my team. I am a huge Biggio/Bagwell guy, so the roster now looks so foreign to me.

I am wondering why I even pull for a team that I haven't gone to see play in 5 years. I live near Austin and the only games close enough to see are the Texas Rangers.

So here's what I'm asking in the poll below: Should I jump ship to another team or stick it out with the Astros?

I think the forseeable future

looks a helluva lot brighter for Texas than Houston. Houston has very little in the majors and almost nothing in the minors.

We all were at one time

I jumped on in the Summer of 1976 when I first saw Bump Willis steal a base against the Royals on NBC’s game of the week on Saturday.

I was 8 at the time I became a Rangers fan.

Growing up in NE Oklahoma there were the Rangers, Royals and Cards. I picked the Rangers.

pre 9=11

you could just walk your son up to the gate at the 7th inning and theyd let you in for free, it was a great way to introduce your kid to the game without having him turn on you as a 4 year old in the 3rd inning. catch a few inning, kids happy. your hit up a game.

its how i ended up a rangers fan, i was the 4 year old cheering

A true fan

Sticks with their team through the highs and lows no matter what. Stick with the Stros’ if they are you passion and you live and die by every pitch from game to game. When something goes very wrong and you swear off every watching another game but you are back the next night. You need to stay with them. If not well come on over to the dark side and watch great baseball from a very young team that is taking off.

if you have been a ’Stank fan your whole life, dont give up now, if your an austin kid who MLB branded ’Stank fans decades ago and never made it to games and just watched b/c austin didnt used to carry the Rangers games, i can see the switch.

It depends on your history

were you raised a Houston fan? Did you cheer for them just because of the players (Biggio/Bagwell) on the team?

I don’t like it when people just switch teams for the hell of it. That means you weren’t really a true fan.

So, if you’re not really a true fan, I suggest you wait and see who wins the world series and go with that team till the next year and then switch again.

so if you have no media market, you have to be stuck with the team you picked when you were 4?

people pick teams based on colors at that point.

Yeah

What I meant was for example…. you pick whatever team you want for whatever reason. But switching just because you haven’t kept up with the team and don’t know the players is lame. At that point you might as well be a front runner and pick whoever is winning.

I'm a die hard Tampa Bay Buccaneer Fan...

I started liking them when they wore the creamsicle jerseys and sucked horribly. I will never pull for another team, BUT I totally made a choice to pull for them. My family is full of Cowboys fans and I was sick of them, so I made the jump a long time ago. I don’t see me pulling for anyone else ever again.

We need all that we can get. Whoever wants to visit the Temple and spend money out there so that Hicks feels a little more comfortable making a splash in the market that may help this team win now and in the future, I am fine with it. Granted, I may not chat with you or agree with your ridiculous, uneducated opinions regarding the team but, by all means, get out there and spend your money.

if you really are an Astros fan

then you won’t ever truly be able to leave them. That’s just the way it is. For example, I grew up in Dallas and now live in Houston, and I really like the way Daryl Morey runs the Rockets, to the point that I find myself watching their games and paying close attention to the likes of Battier and the Chuckwagon, but I will never be able to root for them against the Mavericks. Ever. You see, I grew up watching teh suck incarnate that was the Mavericks leading up to and during the "Three J’s Era" and experienced personal vindication when Nash and Nowitzki emerged as legitimate, likeable stars, so I will always follow the Mavericks.

If you can just switch allegiances on a whim then you really should just get out of sports in general and take up knitting or jarring.

Give up sports for switching one team

Seems a little extreme there buddy…

by LinuxTX on May 19, 2009 12:43 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

you wouldn't have to give it up entirely

you can just enjoy them casually, as one enjoys fireworks or hot air balloons. but if you are really invested in a team to the point of becoming what most people would consider a “fan”, the requisite exclusivity makes it almost impossible to switch. Now you could be using the term like, “I’m a fan of the comedic stylings of Jim Gaffigan in relation to the comedic stylings of Dane Cook”. If that is the case, then there is no exclusivity (you can enjoy more than one comedian) and you are free to casually watch as many games as you’d like.

Most people in this thread are lame

You are not beholden to laundry.

The Rangers are fun to root for at this point but they have also never paid off so root at your own peril. If you are impatient (and really I mean don’t have the patience of a priest) then you’re not going to enjoy rooting for them. Lots of heartbreak and sadness and I can’t shake this feeling that they’re going to win the first two games of the WS only to lose it and never get back there in my lifetime.

So, yeah, if you are getting frustrated with the AStros you probably aren’t going to do so well as a Rangers fan.

One request – if you do start posting here though, refrain from teh pessimism. You probably don’t have enough cred to say things like “that guy sucks.” you haven’t seen suck

its not like he has spent his whole life going to games in Htown only to turn his back on them forever…

Houston has taken for granted the Austin and SA markets b/c they always were just given to them. Now Austin is playing most of the Texas games and they have a choice rather than the unbelievably arrogant MLB who literally draws lines in the sand on who gets to see what….

let the Austin guys figure out whats goin good, these guys have never had a chance to even regularly see the rangers. the more games they see down there, the more fans from south of the brazos we will see at the temple.

I agree with you

This isn’t college sports, where I know a guy who roots for UT even though he didn’t go there just because they’re good. That’s lame.

Pro sports? People tend to cheer for the team you grew up with or the team in the place you live. If there were no pro teams in that city, then you really have no ties. This guy from Austin can root for whoever he wants – who cares? I think it’d be dumb to just pick whatever team you think will be good at the start of whatever season, but if that makes someone happy, why not?

Now, you can’t be one of those Red Sox fans who started crying in 2004 even though they’d been fans for two years. That’s just pathetic. You can’t pick the Rangers now and then say “it feels so great to finally have won a playoff series!” if they win this season.

But I’ll always encourage more people to be Rangers fans. More fans = more money. More money = better players.

if you really loved the astros

then your allegiance shouldn’t change. that said, you can’t just choose who to root for (if you do, that is truly a bandwagon).

i don’t choose to root for the rangers, it just happened. usually it’s a proximity thing, if not it’s a family thing. i can’t help that i’m a ranger fan. it would be easier to be a yankee fan.

if the only reason you rooted for the astros was because of bags and biggio, then you were a fan of the killer b’s, not the astros.

and you can make it through the suckatude. like clark said about the mavs. i was a fan of theirs starting in the early 90s. they were awful. but they became a finals team. that’s the greatest feeling in the world. staying loyal to a team through thick and thin. why was i a mavericks fan? same reason i’m a rangers and cowboys fan. i grew up in northeast texas and my dad was a fan. seeing them succeed was great. it’s like they are a part of you, like family. you don’t dump your brother or sister when times get tough. in fact that’s when you need to be your strongest, it makes success much sweeter.

stay with the astros.

I just wandered by

as I was reading different SBnation baseball blogs. But I thought this was an interesting question.

My thoughts are, if your heart lies some where else, if you enjoy watching another team play, then watch another team. I don’t think fan loyalty is permanent. We sign NO blood oaths. I grew up in Oklahoma as well as Boomer1 did. We are equally split it seems between the Royals, the Rangers and the Cardinals. I rooted for them all. I have favorite periods from each of their history that connect to those teams.

In fact at one time I was a huge Rangers fan. But I’ve since moved from Oklahoma, and I really don’t care that much about the Rangers. It turns out I was a fan of a certain period of the Rangers (Ivan Rodriquez, Juan Gone, Rusty Greer) but now, I root for the Rangers, like you want an old friend to do well….but I got no real vested interest one way or the other.

So if your heart is no longer and Astro fan, it ok. It’s ALSO ok (and I highly recommend this) to have “back up teams”. Those teams that you kinda always will pull for, and can go to for entertainment when your main team is out of it by Memorial Day, is a joke in the league, having just lost at home against a crappy team like the Astros (I’m a Rockies fan, and live in Denver atm) The key to this is knowing who is your main team. If they play each other…whose hat are you wearing (and the answer better not be “who ever has the best record/team”..’cause then you would be a pathetic front runner)

and your new team can not be under any reason: The Red Sox, Yankees, or Cubs…don’t be that guy.

I chose other

Only because there was not an option for “none” Because just by answering this question you have lost your fan card to cheer for any baseball team.

The only salvation you have now is to attend 7 astros games in a row, then throw yourself at the mercy of their fans to see if they will accept you back.

You get 1 team each sport each level. You don’t pick them, they pick you.

I feel like college sports are different

When you’re in college you are actually a part of the organization to an extent. I grew up rooting for UT because I lived in Texas and had friends/family that rooted for them. However, i went to ASU — so I now root for ASU above all else but I still enjoy it when UT wins (just not against ASU).

Pro sports I feel like you pick one and stick with it until you move out of the area and you have kids. For example if I moved to Chicago and had a son, I’m sure I’d take him to Cubs games and I’d probably become a Cubs fans — but I’m still a Rangers fan as well.

I dunno, I don’t think it’s a big deal — I just thought the OP’s reason was laaaaaaaaaaaaame.

college sports are definitely different

by Anonymous New Guy on May 19, 2009 1:01 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Absolutely different

there’s a vested interest in a college team that doesn’t translate to the pros… When I lived in Fort Worth growing up, I was a big TCU fan (still am in many respects) but when I moved to Arkansas and eventually went to the UofA, I became a life-long Razorback.

I’m back in Fort Worth now and I follow the Horned Frogs, but I’m an Arkansas fan first… and that’s forever.

Adding my two cents to the following comments...

I started liking the Astros because of Biggio and Bagwell. I really don’t feel any connection to the team anymore. According to most of you, I should stick with a team solely on players I liked as a kid and that doesn’t seem logical.

In the last 5 years, I’ve been to 10 Ranger games to 1 Astros game. I live in a family of Ranger fans and have kept up with them. I was leaning toward the Rangers because of these ties and I can actually go to a game every once in a while, not because they’ve been doing well recently.

I’m not sure who to pick now after all of your comments. Most of you would rather not have anymore Ranger fans join.

I posted this same question over at The Crawfish Boxes and got 2 comments, so it looks to me Astro fans don’t care about their team.

by LinuxTX on May 19, 2009 12:26 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

See I became a fan of the Rangers when I was a kid and Nolan was pitching

This team is way different than those early 90’s teams but I didn’t go pick another one at some point just because the reason I originally was a “fan” of the team was gone.

I guess it sounds like you weren’t really an “Astros Fan” — sounds like you were a “Biggio and Bagwell fan” because if you were really a Stros fan you probably would’ve stuck with them even when they were gone.

Not a big deal, but to many of us here it does seem like bandwagoning because we’ve been Rangers fans so long and they’ve sucked so hard and then someone just randomly chooses to be a fan. I dunno it’s whatever….if you want to be a Gers fan, fine — just don’t make crappy fanposts and people around here will leave you be haha

Like you, I became a Rangers fan because of Nolan...

Prior to Ryan becoming a Ranger, I was solely a die-hard fan of him and rooted for the Angels (blasphemy, I know) and Astros because he played for them, not really caring if his teams were successful.

Through the first few years with the Rangers, I was still more a fan of Ryan than the Rangers. But when he announced that he was retiring at the end of the ’93 season, I decided to pack up my life, buy season tickets and move to Arlington from Northern California. That year I discovered what it means to be a true and passionate fan of a TEAM, and from that point forward, I knew that I would always remain a Rangers fan, regardless of the players…

I’m not sure if that means I jumped on the bandwagon at one point, but we all got here somehow!

Rangers bandawgon jumpers are welcome

as long as they don’t pretend they are real rangers fans and act like their lifelong dream has been fulfilled if they win a playoffs series (yes, thats our dream)..

the preceding post was a great success.

I was considering the Rangers before the season started due to locale...

But I figured most wouldn’t believe me anyway and would claim bandwagon.

by LinuxTX on May 19, 2009 12:50 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Doesn't matter

People are gonna claim what they believe. Who cares. If you like the team, bring on the rooting interest. The only people that you are going to offend are some of the diehards that have rules that they follow and expect everyone else to follow. It doesn’t mean anything.

Most of the teams I follow are in the DFW area because that is where I grew up and these are the teams that I followed from youth. However, I became a fan of Manchester United in 2001 before I knew about their history and how great they were. I became a fan because of someone marrying in to my family that was also a fan. She introduced me to the team, I followed and only then did I realize that they were very Yankee-like. Most people that I tell that to (or see where I am from) assume I am a bandwagoner. That’s fine. I still love the team, no matter what.

Enjoy the season as a fan of the Texas Rangers. We have lots of young players you can follow for many years to come.

Dude,

if you live near Austin, you’re not that much closer to Arlington than you are Houston. I claim bandwagon!

I'm north of Austin...

I would stay loyal...

to my team. I switched when I was a kid, but will never do so again.

However as a Rangers fan I would like to say that I do support all fans who want to jump on board now. It will only help the Rangers attendance, buisness, et al. and allow them build a better team.

+1

Couldn’t agree more. Plus, I have to admit that I love the extra attention paid to the team by the media. Love all the thoughts, discussions, columns about the team that seem to be abundant now.

How did this actually get 90 comments' worth of attention?

It's sort of a thoughtful question

Allegiance to a sports team can be fickle, and no one really has to produce evidence that they are a ‘true fan’ (or any other classification). Bandwagoning happens, usually because people want to be associated with a winner. I found it interesting that this person was seemingly more a fan of B+B than the Astros as an organization. The only thing I’d offer is, make a change for good reason, not just dissatisfaction with the team you’ve spent time following. Many Ranger fans of from seven to thirty years just won’t give up on their team, no matter they were having losing seasons and had no postseason success. That’s serious fandom. But following any team in any sport is mostly about recreation, and recreation is about doing what you enjoy. So if he doesn’t enjoy the team and maybe never really has, but instead follows star players, it may be time to hook onto a whole team you really like and stay there. Just my .02 and change.

Not to choose

There’s no reason you can’t pull for both teams. Outside of the interleague foolishness (and a long shot at an Astros/Rangers world series), there’s no real conflict of interest. Two leagues, two teams, two times the chance you’ll get a winner.

Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. If they get mad, you're a mile away AND you have their shoes.

Sports doesn't build character

but it does reveal it. I’ve always felt that bandwagon fans would be the kind of people who wouldn’t support their son’s or daughter’s teams if they played for a real lousy club. Does that make me a racist?

Only if you're interested in watching a team full of promising young guys

Learning about them, watching them develop and sticking with them sticking through the inevitable bumps. If you’re looking for a team that you can get behind for the long haul, the Rangers are probably going to be much more gratifying to watch over the next few years than the ’Stro’s.

But if you’re more of a casual baseball watcher, and just wants performance and recognizable names to root for, well… you might as well stick with the Stro’s and root for Berkman and Roy O. If what you’re looking for is immediate gratification, you’re probably not going to get it from the Rangers either. Their advantage lies in their young core, which likely won’t be complete until 2010 and beyond. So unless you can appreciate that and are willing to patiently watch the assembly process that comes before the rewards are reaped… you might as well wait a year or so before jumping onto the Ranger bandwagon.

The Eyes of Texas

Even though you don’t have any good players, an owner who will only spend money on washed up vets, and zero pitching behind Roy O, at least you have Milo Hamilton saying their names and calling plays right? The Rangers are the flashier team with the power hitting and Nolan steering the ship as of late. If you decide to support the Rangers it is going to be a bumpy ride. You just can’t get quit when they start sliding after the All-Star break because by now it has become a custom. That being said, the Rangers feel more like a team and the Astros seem more like a puzzle with all the wrong pieces.
