his analysis of the 'winning record' of opponents is not totally accurate
I think you have to judge the wins based on the record at the time.
For instance, we swept the Angels, which put them down to a .500 ballclub. Does that mean they were .500 team when we played them?

The mariners and angels are both over 500 aside from their games vs the rangers
theres an 8-0 right there..
the preceding post was a great success.
The Rangers really killed the Mariners record this season
I love it.

Winning Records
Regardless of how the stat is categorized, I think it is fair to say the Rangers schedule has been favorable thus far, which was his overall point.
i think his overrall point downplayed the opponents
that the Rangers have already faced.
I’ll give him that this upcoming stretch of baseball will continue to define the Rangers one way or the other, but to say the Rangers have only won two games against teams with a winning record makes it look like the Rangers have yet to play anybody which is not true, and further not true in the fact that they have played games against teams with winning records.
The first place teams in each division have faced the Rangers — Detroit, Toronto, KC faced us when they were in first and played quite well. We put the Mariners into their current plummet, and swept the angels.

Lots of good stuff in there
the only thing missing is how much better the team health has been so far this year than the last two. This team is thinking smartly:
In fact, Feliz and Holland could both be pitching in the Texas rotation down the stretch of a pennant race with the Angels. “It’s possible they could be two of the best 12 guys,” Daniel said. “So the last thing you want to do is have to shut them down or lighten up on their workload down the stretch. So we’ll cut it on the front end.”
Good. Keep the arms fresh down the stretch. Millwood is on pace for about 220 innings, Padilla close to 200. Feldman and Harrison would both hit 180 if they keep on as they have been. McCarthy, who knows. A fresh Holland or Feliz could add a nice boost in the fall, whether in the rotation or out of the bullpen. McCarthy should be looking over his shoulder right now.

Maybe BMac is looking over his shoulder

Rotation
My personal feeling is that neither Holland nor Feliz will see the ML rotation this year unless there are several injuries. Otherwise I think the team is more likely to add a veteran starter to replace McCarthy and keep Holland and Feliz in the pen for this season.

I'd be surprised
if Sheets is ready to pitch this year.
You don’t even hear of him throwing off flat ground or anything yet.

Ditto
For the life of me, I can’t understand why anyone would think it’s likely Sheets would be ready to pitch this year. If he is, it should come as a very pleasant surprise.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
I think it might be possible
Its a long shot, but he could be ready to throw some innings out of the bullpen in September/October. If he signs with the Rangers for 2009/2010, I wouldn’t want to rush him back into the rotation.

Given the current circumstances
Sheets would be a good sign post-draft day even if he can’t (or shouldn’t) come back this season. Of all the frontline pitchers with any injury history, his would appear to be the least damaging to a lengthy career. I’d think he would be a great “shelf sign”. Get him, asure his place in the system, and nurse whatever healing he needs to do to “get right”.

I agree
though they might not want to sign him the day after the draft for appearances sake. One reason I wanted him signed – or someone like Halladay traded for, though the price would be high – is as a top of the staff guy to lead the rotation until the waves of talent mature and are more ready to step up. A 2010 with Sheets at the top followed by some combo of Millwood, Harrison, Feldman, Holland, McCarthy, and perhaps Feliz sounds very nice.
And the Rangers now have the pitching depth to step up if Sheets needs an annual trip to the DL.

I think he meets with the doc today, actually
And if all goes well, suppose to start throwing immediately. We need Evan to get the scoop on that.
Yeah, he was scheduled to meet with Dr. Andrews

Even if he starts throwing
immediately, between rehab, conditioning and stretching out, I can’t imagine he’s ready to go til late August or September. I can’t imagine you plan on having him at all this year, and if you do, it would be a bonus.

If he can go in September
Even better he will be fresh for the playoffs. Hell yes!

disagree
they are managing innings, yes, but they want them strong down the stretch most likely to start games. And, I only want Sheets if they are gonig to sign a veteran.
I will say this, however, that if the Rangers have those two guys in the bullpen, it means that our current crop of starters has continue to pitch extremely well which I wouldn’t be against.

Disagree
One injury is all it would take, not several, for Holland to be in the rotation. I think a trade for a late inning reliever is much more likely than a trade for a veteran starter – for whom they will not want to pay the price.

Isn't it ironic
Good or Bad, Rangers all about offense.
3.10 ERA since this story went up on ESPN. The day Scott Feldman made his first start. The start of winning 13 of 15.
yep
gave up 31 home runs in the first 18 games….and 12 in the 19 games since. In those 19 games they’re 15-4. Very nice!

low pressure
Texas is breaking in Holland, 22, the way Earl Weaver and the old Orioles team did their young starters: with a low-pressure break-in period out of the bullpen.
Coming into a tight game with the bases loaded is not exactly low-pressure.

I don't get all the Maddux love
considering our pitching is no better than last year, he’s been quite a disappointment…
Man, I love winning! You know? It's like better than losing!
better in may than april
and may has been a lot better than any other time last year
"I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the [MLB] for guys to fall in love with [the Rangers’s] sloppy seconds." (thanks cstorm)
that is so dumb....
Have you watched a game? Last year, Padilla would have been pulled during that 4th inning Saturday, but because Maddux (as well as Ryan) have stressed throwing strikes, going deeper and being tough, he got out of that inning and went 8. And if you do watch, did you see what happened when Maddux went and talked to Harrison during the 2nd inning in Baltimore? Only a 3-0 record with a .7 something era since then. Maddux is the farthest thing from a disappointment Steve.
Maddux told Harrison
that he’d take that book away that his in-laws gave to him. That got Matty wide-eyed and on top of things.
(Wife) "So what do you want to watch on the T.V.? UFC or porn?"
(Husband) "Hmm... well, porn, I guess."
now come on
have you not seen the FIP stats?
Man, I love winning! You know? It's like better than losing!
im not a numbers nerd
anyone can create a formula to prove their point, see Mark Cuban… What I pay attention to is the play on the field, and you can see a decernable differance. Mike Maddux has a large part to do with that difference. I dont think we would be anywhere close to this good with Mark Connor, and that is the largest complement you could give Maddux.
I think he was being sarcastic at first...
…and is now baiting you. That or you are both the same person.

You’re dumb. thats plain and simple. maddux is good. youre not.
our sixth, seventh and eighth starters are in the bullpen: Jason Jennings, Derek Holland and Kris Benson."
I take that to mean Jason Jennings is next line before Holland, if injury were to occur.
I'd imagine so
I don’t think they’d want Holland making starts til after the ASB at earliest. Ideally, they’d probably want him in the pen all season.

For now
perhaps, but I think after Holland has a few more appearances they’ll consider him strongly, taking recent performances into account, of course, for both him and Jennings. Kris Benson is not even on this team by the ASB.

i don't think that is the hierarchy
gotta think the list is inverted
"I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the [MLB] for guys to fall in love with [the Rangers’s] sloppy seconds." (thanks cstorm)
but jennings has health and endurance issues at this point
which is why he would be behind holland. i think they would say he’s not capable of pitching 6 innings
"I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the [MLB] for guys to fall in love with [the Rangers’s] sloppy seconds." (thanks cstorm)
At this point
I don’t know that Holland could go 6 right now. He looked out of gas the other night after 52 pitches.

I went to a wrestling camp between my junior and senior years of high school and he was there.
It was held at Pacific Union College (Angwin, Calif.), which is owned by the Seventh-Day Adventists and thus does not serve meat. Who ever heard of a wrestling camp with no meat? Anyway, rumor has it he sneaked in a turkey and didn’t share with anyone.
My dad brought me a bag of beef jerky when he came to pick me up at the end of the camp. Best bag of Oh boy! Oberto I’ve ever had, let me tell you.
i like this
only two Rangers teams in franchise history ever began better than 23-14, and those teams (1996 and 1998) won the division.
mormons stole me and held me against my will with Oklahoma beer and 12+ hour work days.
