Evan Grant on last night's game
Evan Grant has a story up on last night's game, and while he addresses the decision to yank Scott Feldman for Derek Holland (a move I think is defensible), he focuses more on the problem with the offense, and its suddenly shutting down with Josh Hamilton out of the lineup.
The problem with the team right now is that it isn't taking pitches, it isn't working the count, it isn't drawing walks, and thus it isn't getting enough baserunners (or taking advantage of the opportunities they have with the few baserunners they do get).
It is maddening, though, to see the Rangers start pitching okay, and have the bats disappear.

Does anybody ask Hank about his approach?
Or is he just not talking, I can’t remember the last time I saw a Blalock quote.
"I saw your act, just didn't make it for me. Just a lot of fluff."
Someone posted a Tim Kurkjian article yesterday
that had Hank talking about how great of an instructor Rudy is.
I guess he's taking the A-Rod approach.
National media over local. I could be wrong, just haven’t seen it.

Not a subscriber myself. Wish they would make both broadcasts available. Actually, I wish with all sports broadcasts that there was a separate “announcers track” that could be independently muted. Would be nice to hear the sounds of the game without having to listen to an announcer drone on, trying to fill “dead air” or “inform”.
Oh, and please self-fornicate as well.
Then don't lecture others

I know it's easier said than done
But who can’t argue that you’ve got to take pitches and work the count? The results are wonderful. It’s like going to the bucket in basketball. Yeah, it might be hard to do and it might not be the flashiest way to end up where you need to go but good things happen. In b-ball, driving the paint means either a high percentage shot or freethrows. In baseball, taking pitches means working walks or high pitch counts: either way, the result is good. If you work a walk, you get on base, which is the point of the game. If you don’t work a walk or strikeout after taking 5/6/7 pitches, generally the result is still good because the pitcher had to work that much harder and potentially you can get to the soft underbelly of the bullpen quicker. And if you end up with a hit after taking 5/6/7 pitches, you end up with the best of both worlds.
Mike Maddux said on BaD radio yesterday that people’s misconception of a perfect inning for a pitcher is 3Ks. He argued that 3 1-pitch ground outs is the perfect inning because you throw less and go deeper into ballgames. A major problem with this Rangers team IS that they are getting away from Wash’s philosophy of working counts and simply swinging at first pitches. By getting away from that philosophy, they are falling onto a double edged sword: putting more pressure on themselves by going for big hits on less than optimal counts and also having to face the other teams starter for extended innings.
My farm system can beat up your farm system.
And Buehrle
only throws strikes…. they could have taken all night long, but they didn’t swing at too many poor pitches (from the early innings that I watched)
Wow
Every pitch he threw was a strike? Awesome!

I mean, seriously
He went to the same school as Kevin Brown.
Haven't been around
…and don’t know what the conversation has been, but I do not see how hooking Feldman is defensible.
He’d been great all night prior to that jam. Not good. Great. There were two outs. It was his situation to work out of, and if he were given the chance we’d probably talking about a Rangers win today.
Besides, the guy has a future on this team. Or at least I think so. And in the short term some in the org obviously think so. He needs to be stretched out, then, right? I mean if you want him to start, let him go until he begins to get tired. A little more each time out. I saw no signs of fatigue yesterday.
So they bring in a rookie (a really green one) to face Jim Fucking Thome with the bases full. That’s a BRILLIANT IDEA. If they insisted on yanking Feldman, there’s only one other worse option to go to right now and that would have been Every Day Eddie. I would have taken any other reliever in the pen before Holland, whether they were right or left handed.
Clearly the Rangers suck at working the count and getting on base. They can hit for extra bases. A few of them will hit for a good average. That’s been the norm since their late-nineties heyday. Last year was an exception. Since it was a recent exception I was hoping that they may be able to turn patience into a trend, but with the personnel they have I’m not sure if they’re going to be able to do that unless the coaching staff really, really turns the heat up. They’ve been taught to be aggressive at the plate and it’s that simple. Unfortunately it is not a winning approach for the whole damn lineup to hack like they do.
Whole team is in love with the long ball. You can eat bad pitching alive by hitting home runs, but you will never win consistently against good pitchers by swinging out of your damn shoes every at-bat. To me this is common sense, and for the life of me I cannot figure out why this particular group of very talented hitters haven’t figured it out. It’s crazy.
From last year we know they CAN do it, which makes what’s going on this year even worse.
Some of you will hate me for saying this, but this is why I respect the Yankees and Red Sox. It’s not just their big name players with huge contracts. Even their role players will make the pitcher work. That’s the philosophy of the team, and don’t tell me it can’t be taught. If you get a pitchers pitch, even if it’s a strike, don’t swing at it. Don’t be afraid to strike out. Work the count and get something you can hit, even if you get behind in the count and have — GASP — shorten your swing.
And that’s my rant.
Well, I disagree about Holland – I think it’s fine for him to get that experience – but I see your point. And obviously just about anyone would have been better retrospectively.
But I really agree with your point about our offense. The problem with the Rangers hitters is not that they can’t hit, because they really can. The problem is that there are many ABs that they go up there hacking away. I can tell they are in that hacking state just by listening to Nadel’s voice, so I guarantee the opposing pitchers know. They’d be morons to throw anything close to the strike zone in those ABs, because the Rangers will swing at everything. It isn’t every AB, but I think almost every Ranger on this team (with the exceptions of Jones and Murphy this year) have ABs like that periodically. It isn’t just Hack Blalock and K Davis. Imagine how good Kinsler would be if he didn’t get into these 2-3 game stretches where he’d swing at balls being bounced to the plate.
This is a great paragraph.
Thanks
To clarify my Holland thinking, Thome was the wrong batter for him to face. The guy has a ton of experience, is selective, has big time power, and hits well in Arilington. He’s the kind of guy who will school a rookie, yes. I didn’t like Feldman getting pulled in the first place, of course, but if were almost anyone else at the plate I wouldn’t mind seeing Holland in that situation. The experience he ended up getting was very predictable and I don’t see what he could’ve taken away from it. Except for the L/L thing this was a mismatch on the highest order.
by Black Francis on May 2, 2009 4:10 PM CDT up reply actions
I think it was
predetermined that Holland was going to follow Feldman. RW is terrible at making in game adjustments to their plans. The pitcher to bring in was CJ. You get the lefty vs lefty matchup with an experienced reliever. But, that means varying from the predetermined plan and using a CJ out of his preordained role. In game management is one reason Wash should go.
The biggest problem with th offense is not missing Josh HAmilto but the lack of situational hiiting which includes taking pitches. What happened to working the count? They didn’t in 2007. Last year they did but that seems to be more of Milton’s influence than anything Wash wanted. This year they are back to 2007 type of offense. The second reason should be fired: he cannot instill his “work the count” philosophy on the offense. Either he tries but the players don’t listen to him or he just leaves hitting up to Rudy.
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
Do you really think
that CJ would have done anything? You need a guy with any sort of command, and that guy is never CJ. Did the fact that he got hit around when he came out mean nothing? The guy to bring in for that situation is not on the roster.

I hope that rain moves along quickly.
I SO want to see some baseball today! And i decided that i was going to replace wash for just today and i can guarantee a victory. All batters will lay off the first pitch, all night. And if they swing at the first pitch, they can find their asses on the bench. These guys have to be more patient at the plate. We got a solid, best of the year, from Feldman and had SO many chances to tack on extra runs, we just decided to pop up to he infield on first pitch swings. They guy on the team who is struggling the most, CD, was patient and took a walk after going down 0-2. We need more of that and we WILL be more successful. go away rain and GO RANGERS!

They are most likely just learning the very basics about the Cowboys system and doing the basic football activities. Probably nothing you don’t already know about them.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Jerry will do Talent Evaluation
the way he has always done it. The player with the biggest name, even if his best days are behind him, is the biggest talent.
4/10/09 - Josh Hamilton's last walk.

I sometimes wonder if the DFW sports fan
is the stupidiest in america, but i dont think thats actually the case, we just tend to overreact a ton and i think its almost totally due to the scrutiny the Cowboys recieve, every move is analyzed more than three seasons worth of Rangers moves.

hopefully everyone is okay

yeah they said there was one person on the ground who was knocked out
They just showed a video on ch 11 and man, its crazy. The entire bubble is gone. flattened on the ground and nothing left but rubble everywhere. man that video was nuts. you could see palyers pulling people out from underneath rubble and stuff. WOW
Elvis has "shook up" Arlington!!
Is that why the sirens just went off?

Quite a day in D-FW
Is BMac about to toss a no-no?
or Jose Contreras
given the hacktastic tendencies of this current team

If 80 year-old Contreras throws a no hitter against this team
I will vomit.
And then probably post a picture of it on the GDT.
I'm in Murphy
and heard sirens, but it never seemed tornado bad. Seemed like 50 mph winds or so for a few minutes and quite dark off to the south – Garland direction obviously.

Ditto on Murphy
Strong sideways rain made it halfway into the garage before I closed it. Now it’s serene.

I went out to clean my french drains
because I was sure they must be clogged with the lake in my backyard. Nope, just that much water.

What are the chances
there’s no game tonight?

It’s not like this wasn’t a likely outcome.

It's the first month
of a 3 year contract. It’s not just about immediate dividents, it’s about how well they age.

I agree...
with Evan about the problems the offense is having and that this lineup isn’t the same with Hamilton not in it. However Josh hasn’t really been hitting that well so far this year.
And as many have noticed the real problem is guys like Byrd and Blalock swinging at everything. How is having Josh back in the lineup going to help that? The guy has swung at something like 70% of the pitches he has seen this year. I’m not sure he’s the answer to the problem.
