Around SBN: Keith Hernandez Reacts To Gary Carter's Passing

Minors 5/20

Kenny Gomez has the early start for BAK, 1pm today.

Martin Perez and Jacob Brigham go at 6p.

Omar Poveda starts for Frisco at 7.

Omar over the years:

149.1 IP for Cln (18 yrs):  8.0 K | 2.2 BB
125.2 IP for Cln (19 yrs): 8.6 K | 2.3 BB
28.0 IP for Bak (19 yrs):  10.6 K | 4.2 BB
90.2 IP for Bak (20 yrs):  9.6 K | 4.0 BB
37.0 IP for Frs (21 yrs):   5.1 K | 4.4 BB

As soon as he left Clinton, he started walking guys.  And then his K rate disappeared in Frisco.  Still a pretty small sample.

Anyway his May has gone well, with some unsightly peripherals:  19 IP, 2.37 ERA , 10:7 K:BB.

Scouts love the change and he's got a big pitcher frame.  Here's hoping the peripherals tune up.

And shroomer's site, of course...

A question for the meantime:  do you believe in Michael Kirkman?

Kirkman

Yes, I believe.

Sustained success in the Cal League is meaninful, and sustained dominance is really exciting. Also, like z was pointing out yesterday, the guy has a pedigree – he was highly touted in his draft class out of high school. And like Jason Parks and Jason Cole have pointed out, his stuff is legit.

Another thing is that the ascendency of Holland last year just kind of inspires some confidence that the org is coaching these guys up and the program is working. It seems more likely to have a breakout pitching prospect continue to gain velocity and sustain early season success, because we have now seen it happen before.

Poveda

has a change I believe in.

and yeah, I believe in Kirkman too. I hope he sees Frisco at some point this year.

Kirkman

In my mind he is the top surprise in the system so far.

That is tempting

but there is a lot of competition out there. Perez’s seemless transition to low A ball has been eye opening, as has the revival of Font and Castillo revival.

You're surpised by Perez?

Or Font?

Castillo has been nice.

My biggest surprise is the struggles of Michael Main.

biggest surprise for me

Max isn’t hitting at all. I’m looking bad on that one.

not surprised

but Perez’s success in a full season league at such a young age could not be taken for granted. that he has been among the best pitchers in that league is a very pleasant surprise. And Font, after last season, couldn’t be taken for granted either. We kept hearing that the only arm to rival his in our entire system was Feliz’s, so again, it isn’t out of the blue, but it also could have easily gone either way this year.

I'm not surprised

that Perez and Font are good or doing well, and everyone was already talking about them. No one was talking about Kirkman pre-season, or at least, no one was predicting he’d do anything like this.

he was one of my sleepers...

Matt Lawson was another. Lawson is hitting well but has shown little improvement with his plate discipline, which is disappointing.

when did you tout Kirkman?

I’d like to give you props on that, I haven’t seen it.

found it

You called him a sleeper candidate back on April 13th. Very nicely done.

But that wasn't preseason

kudos, though, for the early notice.

Those picks

were embedded in the capsule summaries in the worksheets i posted when i started the site back in December. I just announced them on 4/13 if you believe the post. no worries – one of my breakout candidates has already been released, Schlect…

Heh

mixed record, but kudos anyway. I remember reading your list preseason, lots of info there.

Beltre

with solo HR in first. Will this run of adjusting the Cal league continue? Seems still no patience at the plate, but getting better contact this month.

Kennil Gomez

Good news: 8 k, 0 bb in 5 innings.

Bad news: 8 hits and 4 earned runs.

as long as he keeps up his K rate

and his G:F ratio, i am okay with him getting hit a little bit.

by clark on May 20, 2009 3:47 PM CDT up reply actions

He's one guy who will come out

of High A with a higher ERA due to his GO rate. I’m not too worried about it. His walk rate is below 2 in his last4 starts and his homer rate minuscule. He’ll probably end the season with a 5+ era if he stays all year but not to worry.

Zach Phillips

is pitching like a man possessed. 3 perfect innings with 4 Ks and a 4-1 G-F ratio. Keep these lefties comin’.

Bakersfield.

I’d like to see him in Frisco pronto. Like you, I loves me some southpaws.

Anyone heard about his ETA?

Perez

was up to 96 on K.
Seems done for the night with 6 hits given up, one earned run, 2 walks, and 5 Ks.

What is the innings limit for this guy? Already at 35.2 innings, I am thinking its 100. Last years total was 61.
