Richard Durrett (DMN) has apparently been getting lots of questions about McCarthy losing his rotation spot to Holland.

I concede that at the moment, barring injury McCarthy is the most deserving candidate to lose his turn should Holland merit the move, but I would hate to see us give up on a potential solid back- to middle- of-the-rotation pitcher at this stage.

McCarthy's numbers are not that bad and if he can stay healthy (the biggest if, but) he could still be a key piece moving forward.

McCarthy is on his 6th pitching coach in five years by my count, has never started more than 22 games in a season and is averaging fewer than 10 starts per over his career, yet his numbers and peripherals don't look that bad to me.

I say give him 30 starts this year and at least 10 into next year before we move on. Don't let the good from this year derail the methodical rebuilding plan. Pitching takes time to develop.

Agreed

Also, even if you wanted to move Holland into the rotation at this point, you would have to stretch him out. How are you going to do that?

It would seem to be very silly to me

to make that move before the All Star game, barring a complete breakdown by BMac.

I wouldnt want to do it nearly this soon either

but it was looking like b-mac might was the leader of the pack for who gets replaced. turned it around remarkably similar to harrison and i hope he does in fact force himself to stay in the rotation.

the preceding post was a great success.

+1

that is my hope as well, if he can just stay healthy and get the experience, his stuff seems success-worthy. I tried to do some research on pitcher development: does it take taller pitchers longer to develop, avg. number of career starts, etc. but didnt have the time or knowledge to really dig in like some of strong stat gurus here.
