I hope you guys...

…aren’t this damn emotional in real life. You’ll all die young of heart attacks and shit.

by Black Francis on May 20, 2009 8:45 PM CDT up reply actions

still an overreaction

You guys were acting like they were facing AAAA pitchers or something. That’s what gets to me…when the Rangers are just beaten by pitching that would have beaten any team in the history of the motherfucking sport and you can’t admit that.

So are you saying we should sit here and be happy that the Rangers lost?

I'm not happy the Rangers lost

but honestly? I was expecting a 15K, less than three-hit shutout from this game.

I’m pretty happy with what we got. For the most part, they showed patience at the plate and actually took some pitches.

I’d rather the Rangers won, but like I said – this is way better than I thought I was going to get out of this game.

oh jesus tell me we arn't going to get into the "overreaction" in gameday threads again.

its ludicrous.

if someone says DFA some guy because of one bad game, fine. but simple “this sucks”? Come on man. How can you not be used to that by now.

Getting all excited by each angels win is an overreaction too ya know.

the preceding post was a great success.

by DShep on May 20, 2009 8:53 PM CDT up reply actions

I am sad about the loss, yes

But, we chased Verlander out early. Had Harry not melted down in the 6th, we may have just won that game.

It was good to see a HR again, and good to see the guys showing some patience at the plate.

NOW LETS DESTROY THOSE MOTHERFUCKERS TOMORROW AFTERNOON!!!!

There wasn't much humor in what I saw

…but whatever.

Usually at the start of each year, I’m excited about the baseball season and will participate in the GDTs. Then I grow weary of them. I’m obviously getting to that point right now.

by Black Francis on May 20, 2009 8:57 PM CDT up reply actions

he didn't say there was humor in it

The DFA thing is humor

…and this isn’t directed just to you but I’m not talking about people saying “this sucks”. Yes, it did suck. But it sucked because Zumaya is pretty damn good. To me people seemed to think because the bases were loaded with one out the Rangers would automatically be gifted three runs or more no matter who was pitching or how they were pitching or how those runners got on board in the first place.

I know I’m going to lose this argument, if that is what this is. People are going to be emotional in GDTs. That’s the way it is. Whatever.

by Black Francis on May 20, 2009 9:01 PM CDT up reply actions

the DFA thing is humor

it’s the most unfunny nails against the chalkboard thign there is. I can’t believe you would say that.

Yet saying this sucks, which isn’t even a knee jerk assessment of the performance of the rangers but merely an expression of sadness – you have a problem wtih that? Really?

Long ago

It was funny when it first started. I thought, anyway. I didn’t say it was funny now but I don’t think people are being serious when they say DFA a guy either.

Like I believe I said, I don’t have a problem with saying something sucks. Just acknowledge that something may suck not because whoever a person is currently pissed at sucks, but because they were beaten by players who just weren’t going to be beaten.

I hope I made myself more clear.

We get upset when we see every batter coming to the plate trying to hit it out of the park when a good single will score. To be honeswt, I’m really getting pissed off at the way EVERYBODY goes up hacking at everypitch thrown at them.

I’m looking at the season as a whole, and starting to question the effectiveness of Rudy Jaramillo as a batting coach. It seems that Andruw Jones is the only person that he is able to coach anymore.

And it may have been acknowledged but there was still plenty of “BMac should be sent down so Holland can be in the rotation” and “BMac sucks” talk going on. People complaining about baserunners when he had a WHIP of 1.7 while Harrisons WHIP was over 2 tonight.

in the third or fourth inning he had an era over 6 for the year with all around bad numbers, and you really think its ridiculous to consider his removal from the rotation? if we had better options Id have no problem with doing it and letting him earn his way back in. He certainly can be

I just don’t think on a night when we get one hit by Dontrelle freaking Willis and he gives up 3 ER in 7 innings he should have gotten as much as he did.

That just seemed to me like guys taking shots at him strictly because of who he is not based on what he did or has done

He is steadily improving and staying healthy

Which is the biggest thing. Past two starts he has pushed himself to get through 7 innings which he had never done before as a Ranger. His curve last night showed flashes of something similar to Verlanders tonight. As long as he is healthy this season unless he absolutely implodes you have to give him the ball every 5th day and see what he does

but the offense scored 3 runs

if harrison pitches like he had the last few times out, that might have been enough.

i’m not saying 3 runs is fantastic but given that harrison’s task was to shut down detroit’s offense and the offense’s task was to score runs against verlander and co., I would grade this as the offense doing about what was expected of them and harrison failing his expectations

one bad inning

sorry, that’s how baseball works. you can have 8 great innings and one bad inning and it is still a bad outing.

3 runs against verlander in detroit would probably be a B or B-. Harrison’s performance is a solid C.

dude. what don't you understand

3 runs against verlander is not evidence of a bad offense. if anything, it is evidence of an average to a slightly above average offense (I’m grading on a grad school curve).

"I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the [MLB] for guys to fall in love with [the Rangers’s] sloppy seconds." (thanks cstorm)

by ab03 on May 20, 2009 9:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Your curve is assuming

that the offense was taking quantum physics and Harrison was taking a first grade math class.
I agree facing Verlander would be about equal to taking quantum physics but our offense had all the prereq’s to take the class. Some just refuse to study the material.
Facing Detroit’s offense deserves its own curve. They aren’t bad themselves.

Probably just have to agree to disagree about who gets the blame. I contend that it was a team loss.

It is a great thing to know the season for speech and the season for silence.

by bioaggie on May 20, 2009 9:18 PM CDT up reply actions

It also depends on what you expected of Harrison.

Lots of folks seemed to feel this was going to be a pitchers’ duel, with Harrison staring down Verlander. I’d hoped for the best, but I’d also tamped down my expectations for Harrison.

The outing was disappointing ~ he actually was somewhat lucky to get to the start of the 6th in the shape he did ~ but I do think expectations were relatively outsized.

by Snark on May 20, 2009 9:27 PM CDT up reply actions

Why would it be Harrison vs Verlander?

Wouldn’t it be Harrison vs Detroits offense?

A Detroit offense without one of its biggest weapons and starting a rookie in the 3 hole.

by rcpratt on May 20, 2009 9:46 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree that he's pitching well.

The point is that expecting the Rangers to score 2-3 runs in 6 IP off Verlander tonight was not unreasonable. The Twins did it in the last game (regardless of how), and that club is not exactly an offensive powerhouse.

the grad school thing was just to say that the average was a B – which is why the rangers average offense got a B.

Depending on how you look at it

…I think the Rangers offense has shown serious weakness all year long. Tonight they may have been coming out of their recent slump, though, because they fought pretty hard at times against some guys who were making real, real good pitches. At times they also looked foolish, but Verlander and Zumaya are going to do that to teams.

we got him out after 6

His average outing prior to tonight: 6
Verlander isn’t exactly roy halladay in the innings category.

Did you think the offense was particularly patient or adjusted their approach or whatever they can do? I dont think it was a terrible job to get shut down those pitchers, but it wasn’t a good performance.

And being concerned about the offense goes deeper than that game. They have simply not been hitting very well for what seems like weeks now. Relatively of course, its not like they’ve been terrible. But i’d certainly like to see things start clicking on the offense because the pitching ERA that provided that good run isn’t going to last. imo.

Would everyone chill out?

A team that loses it’s best hitter and it’s closer should have a hard time against a team playing well with good starting pitching…especially when playing away from home with a lineup that specializes in slugging.

The Rangers had a hot streak, it’s now over. They weren’t at good as their hot streak suggested (shocker) and they aren’t as bad as they have been the past 2 days. This team still needs better pitching (not just good results), a couple more bullpen arms (preferably that don’t come with crazy restrictions) and to stop batting Hank 4th.

Does anyone remember what we hoped for this year? Ok, so calm down.

The only armchair manager thing I've got tonight

And granted I didn’t catch the game until it was already 4-1

In the ninth…
I sort of understand Vizquel for Tea… speed, veteran, etc…But I don’t hit Hammy until there’s a chance to win it.
I hit Andrus second… especially since Vizquel didn’t get on. (Salty lefty is the other option since we pinch hit for Tea but I’d rahter have Andrus)
Kins
Hammy for Murphy is where he should pinch hit. Of course if the game ends with Hammy on deck then everyone gripes because he didn’t pinch hit with our best hitter.

Yeah

Double edged sword

You have to plan for Hammy to pinch hit in the first three batters and since you were going with Vizquel for Tea it had to be for Andrus cause it surely wouldn’t have been for Kinsler

Question about the 5th inning

Ok, I have been working all evening, just read through the play by play and I’m extremely puzzled about the 5th:
-Byrd singles
-Cruz singles, Byrd to 2nd
-Davis K’s
-Teagarden singles, Byrd scores, Cruz moves to 2nd
-Andrus grounds out, Teagarden to 2nd no mention of Cruz here
-Kinsler walks
-Murphy grounds out

What happened to Cruz? I was in my office looking at the gamecast and it’s like Cruz just disappeared. Teagarden moved to 2nd, but where did Cruz go? The screen only showed a runner on 2nd until Kinsler walked.

the mlb gameday will simply jump from one batter to the next and not tell me what happened to the last one, and still show all the pitches (except the one that ended the at-bat) of the previous batter, with the first pitch to the new batter overwriting the first pitch to the last batter, the second pitch overwriting the old second pitch, etc.

Has anyone tried Blockbuster?

The whole “Can return at the store a certain amount of times per month” thing is interesting, plus I heard by the end of the summer they’re going to be adding videogames which is nice…. even though I don’t game much anymore. It’s still a nice feature to have considering I own a PS3 and have access to a Wii.

We have it

The wife and kids love it, I’m not a big movie watcher.

Like you say, it’s kinda the best of both worlds. You cue up the movies you want shipped to your house, and if you watch all those, you can just take them to the store and switch them out, or return them via mail.

Sorry for all the questions, but I’m really considering going with them now that I’ve told NFlix to get boned, and I don’t know anyone who’s used them.

Dexter is great

So is Rescue Me. Two completely different kinds of shows though. Rescue Me has a lot more humor in it (and a hell of a lot more cursing and racial jokes and all that good stuff). Dexter has some funny moments too, but more of a messed up humor kind of thing. I like the story lines in both.

Is it?

I watched the first ten minutes with my Sister and it seemed super cheesey and cliche. We both nixed it at the first commercial break.

I always liked Mal, though, and it got reupped for a second season so maybe it’s actually good.

Is it really worth a shot?

Oh, and RIP Life. I really liked that show. At least they’re bringing back Scrubs… though how they’re gonna continue it is perplexing. Apparently they’re considering an ER style continuation where a bunch of the cast leaves and the show just sort of goes on with a bunch of new characters every year.

Braff and Chalke are only signed for 6 more episodes (though that could change).

Plus Neil Flynn (sp?), aka, The Janitor, has a new show coming out next year, so he’s presumably out.

Apparently lots of the cast is still up in the air in terms of contracts while the show runners figure out what they’re going to do. (It was so close to cancellation for so long that they hadn’t been working on keeping people signed on.)

Plus with Braff taking a job at another hospital they either need to bring him back real quick or completely change the show.

I really love that show, though.

Hilariousness and no fucking laugh track.

by thedirkatron on May 20, 2009 10:05 PM CDT up reply actions

that woudl be weird with just donald faison

and while that show is partly ensemble, braff is a main part. i doubt they could keep the show going for more than a season without him.

although, i dont’ think writing his return back to the hospital will be all that difficult. i haven’t been following the plot but it is still a comedy. they could just say “it was all a dream” in a satirical way and people would be fine with it.

From what they've said

It seems like they are going to go with mostly a whole new staff with just some of the old regulars there. They aren’t going to do something like that 70s show did where they tried keeping all the jokes the same just without Topher Grace and Ashton Kutcher.

Well apparently the two ways they're considering going are a "new" show at ZB's new hospital.

And more of an ensemble show at Sacred Heart that’s mostly the same only sans JD and the Jani-Tor.

The new interns they brought in this year were all pretty good, with the exception of the handsome black guy who couldn’t act his way out of my butt hole and needs to kill himself, and it did suck when they lost the sarcastic bearded ethnic guy to Parks and Recreation, but overall I think they could do a kickass show like that.

I’m just super excited they’re bringing it back.

They sometimes went overboard with it

Sometimes it was just too much for one episode. Also Dr. Cox would hate on JD way more than he should. I liked how they did in the early part of the show where you would sometimes see he liked JD, but would mostly just give him crap. In the later seasons, he went way out of his way to get JD and they pretty much cut out the love part in the love-hate relationship.

Her whole backstory is that she was an explosives expert that was a part of the IRA or something. Brandon Webb and Zambrano have always been good hitters

Kerry Wood was a good batter too.

Then the next game or two had 2 hr’s…good lord!

I blame myself

One of our managers at work pointed out to me today that since I got a haircut Monday afternoon, the Rangers’ win streak stopped.

At least I had the Pelican/Isis show at the Granada tonight to cheer me up. I’m gonna be seriously dragging ass at work tomorrow, but it was worth it to go!

Lucky. I saw Pelican last year open up for Thrice and enjoyed furiously. Did you catch Tombs opening up?

So the new Terminator sucked ass (no surprise)

and it seems like this game did too…Am I the only one who hates the Tigers? The Rangers record against them over the past few years has to be terrible
