Thursday a.m. Rangers things
Well, the Rangers turned a triple play yesterday, so that was fun. And at least the Angels lost.
Still, I'm ready to see Texas get out of Detroit. And never come back.
Matt Harrison says he couldn't locate his fastball yesterday, which is what led to the runs.
Jeff Wilson says Jarrod Saltalamacchia has been great at throwing out runners this season.
Josh Hamilton is still day-to-day, but hopes to play today.
Frank Francisco's bullpen session yesterday apparently went great, and he's set to come off the d.l. tomorrow. I would assume we'll see Warner Madrigal go back to AAA to make room for him.
Randy Galloway has a column about Nolan Ryan telling Kevin Millwood to get in shape.
Joe Slusarski was let go as the Frisco pitching coach. He'd been brought in only this season, and was someone Nolan Ryan knew from his days with the Houston organization.

I'm curious
What does a AA pitching coach have to do to get fired 2 months into his first season?
"He's old school in that he give up his groin like that. It hurt me when he do that" -- Worsh on Chris Davis' stretch at first base to end the game vs. the Angels on 5/16
Especially when
the Rangers used to have a minor league manager that would talk to reporters naked all the time, and he was with the Rangers for years.

AA Pitching
The frisco pitching hasn’t been great this year, the talent level is higher than the results they were getting.
"I'm against picketing, but I don't know how to show it." - Mitch Hedberg
He posted that
indicated it was not due to a substance abuse or legal issue. It was conveyed that it simply was not a good fit.

it does seem weird
To come out and say, “We are firing Mr. Slusarski, and it’s not for substance abuse”. I don’t know what to make of that.

yeah
that doesn’t sound all that great

Reading Evan's post
it looked like whoever said that was responding to a question about why he was let go, not offering up information.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
still
you would assume somebody asked the question for a reason
and it is interesting that no other explanation was given
"I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the [MLB] for guys to fall in love with [the Rangers’s] sloppy seconds." (thanks cstorm)
A reason
Yes, it’s surprising for a pitching coach to suddenly be let go when we’ve heard nothing about it previously. So a reporter asks if there’s more to the story and they answer. We really are a bit too excited here about possible intrigue.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
the reporter just guessed substance abuse?
really?
"I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the [MLB] for guys to fall in love with [the Rangers’s] sloppy seconds." (thanks cstorm)
reading it again
i guess it could have been one of two things (legal issues the other) that might warrant immediate dismissal.
fair enough
"I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the [MLB] for guys to fall in love with [the Rangers’s] sloppy seconds." (thanks cstorm)
and
maybe evan shouldn’t have written it like that
"I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the [MLB] for guys to fall in love with [the Rangers’s] sloppy seconds." (thanks cstorm)
Not a guess
I’m just guessing that the ‘source’ answered a question with a regrettable throwaway sentence that Evan copied the gist of.

They really can't even say it was not for substance abuse

I think we are all reading waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much
into that sentence, and I think it’s a bit slanderous to make that sort of assumption. If it’s not legal to say it was for substance abuse, then it would certainly be stupid of the club to say “uh, it’s not for substance abuse.”
He was obviously let go for pitching performance reasons.

Interesting note from the Galloway column
The Rangers had a deal in place to get rid of Millwood at the trade deadline that was nixed when he injured his groin. Hmm, wonder who was the other party in that deal?

Interesting Galloway column today.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
Since it was a trade deadline deal
I doubt SFO was involved.
The Cubs, White Sox and maybe even the Yankees make sense.
If Millwood being out of shape was such a point of contention in the Ranger FO for such a long time, I wonder why it took so long to confront him.
The column does seem to confirm that Nolan made early suggestions in March ’08 (says everybody ignored him) and then spent last year observing before grabbing the wheel of the car and implementing change for this year.

Or it could be...
That Millwood needs a good season for his option to vest and guaranteeing him 12 more million dollars instead of an NRI somewhere else.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
Not sure I believe there really was a deal
Nolan seems to be his only source and it seems odd he wouldn’t have attributed that to Nolan if he was the one who said it.
I'm suspicious too.
It would be great if JD came out and said there was no such deal. It would make Galloway look like an ass, and it would be a nice touche for Jon-Boy. The Star Telegram columnists always seem to hint at these phantom deals that never happened that no one else ever hears about. It’s their MO to make it seem like they’re “in.” with the front office. I’d love to see them called on it, but hey, maybe they are true.
Though of course a front office denial is worth about as much as the paper it's printed on.

Warner
I guess it’s a good problem that he gets squeezed when Frank’s activated. Cause everything I’ve read about his performance this year has been good.
It puts an exclamation point on how bad Kris Benson needs to do well, in whatever role he’s in… I look forward to when he’s cut from the 25.

Do you want Warner up here getting work as infrequently as Benson does?
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
if it helps the team win games I do
We are leading the division, while at the same time developing young players at the big league level. I don’t think having a veteran spare in the place of a younger, better pitcher does anybody any good.
"He's old school in that he give up his groin like that. It hurt me when he do that" -- Worsh on Chris Davis' stretch at first base to end the game vs. the Angels on 5/16
Is Benson causing us to lose any games?
Warner had plenty of ML experience last year that right now he needs to pitch and pitch alot. We can’t guarantee him that up here with the way our starters have done lately. If benson starts being used 3 times a week then yeah we need to look into bringing up someone better but right now i would rather see Warner pitch in AAA.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
when given the choice between...
A player that’s not causing us to lose any games because we have been able to avoid using him
OR
A player that should help us win games
I’ll take the latter, especially when that player is also younger and has a future on the team.
"He's old school in that he give up his groin like that. It hurt me when he do that" -- Worsh on Chris Davis' stretch at first base to end the game vs. the Angels on 5/16
How will Madrigal help us win games if we don't have opportunities to use him?
is he going to supplant O’Day as the RH setup guy? Is he gonna take over for Frankie as closer?
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
I have no problem with
Benson being the 7th man in the bullpen. Let Warner go back to AAA and refine his pitches. It was encouraging yesterday that he had a 1-2-3 inning with a K.

madrigal
I agree i think he needs to refine himself it AAA. The question on benson isn’t really related to madrigal at all.

What is kind of neat about this
is the Rangers are done playing the ChiSox this year. They have 9 games remaining against the Angels and 6 against the M’s. Its conceivable that if this deal goes down, Peavy could pitch up to 3 times against the Angels instead of Bartolo Colon or Jose Contreras.
Little things will matter if the Rangers are going to win this division.

Peavy is owed an additional $8.35MM this year, $15MM in ’10, $16MM in ’11, $17MM in ’12, and a $4MM buyout for ’13. Total: $60.35MM guaranteed through 2012.

From Heyman
Peavy’s agent, Barry Axelrod, said that Peavy prefers "Middle America,’’ so that should work. However, Peavy is also known to like the National League.
Hmm. We’ll see which one of those two weighs more heavily. I think i might have an idea which way the smart money is leaning.
And what well traveled multi-millionaire actually prefers Middle America? Chicago is great, but I’d pass on the rest of M.A. if money was no object.

Just sayin...
“Chicago is great, but I’d pass on the rest of M.A. if money was no object.”
I would probably choose some cities on the coasts over middle American cities too, but there are more cities than just Chicago that are worth moving to besides Chicago. Dallas is one…but a large part of that is because that’s where the sports teams that I like play.
And since this is a Rangers blog, I figured that you would like more than just Chicago in middle America too.

If dollars were no object
I’d live wherever I wanted and just fly to Dallas often for games.

If housing costs wasn't an issue
I would actually have the opposite preference.
I like DFW a lot, but there are many cities I would MUCH prefer, and I would bet that most wealthy, well traveled people would agree with me.
Usually in these situations, someone picks a much smaller area they prefer, like say, the Northeast, or Texas, which makes more sense to me. Family considerations and whatnot.
I just find wanting not to be on either coast as rather surprising.

I can understand it
Peavy is a southern boy. If you grew up in rural America and want to spend your off days hunting and fishing instead of hitting up sushi bars and surfing, “middle america” is far more preferable to California.
Heck, I don’t hunt or fish, but I prefer the quiet individualism of the middle as opposed to the crowded coasts.
PhD
Yah, that makes some sense.
I’ve never understood the appeal of hunting/fishing, but if that’s your thing, Middle America is prolly pretty nice.
But other than that… like noted international idiot Brian Thomas said, it’s kind of peculiar to designate middle america as your preferred destination.

All those sunny 70 degree days
must get annoying. Who wouldn’t rather have ice storms, and 100 degrees with high humidity.

Believe it or not
people actually complain about the sunny 70 degree days.
Of course, it’s usually because they “miss having seasons.”
I suspect it’s more about they “miss complaining about something.” :D

I loved my time
in SD (well, Carlsbad actually). I’ve never really understood the attraction in having months of the year where you have no desire to go outside.

Me too
But then, I’m more of an outdoorsy type of person.
I love hiking, going to the beach, playing sports, kayaking, etc., etc….
I suppose if you don’t really like doing outdoorsy things, then, having a sense of the passage of time might be worth living elsewhere.
And besides, if you WANT to experience other season outdoor stuff (aka skiing, snowboarding), you can do that too (though you’ll have to drive somewhat to do that).

I just don't like the whole, " i would prefer to stay in the NL"
or “or perennial winner in the AL”
But that’s just me. I like a guy who is original, a leader.
Meh.
I think a guy wanting some say in where he lives/works is perfectly fine.

How long is his contract? 3 years he has to play half his games for 6 to 7 months a year in whatever place he goes.
It’s one thing if he didn’t want to be traded at all, but to be so choosy, he doesn’t want to go from the NL to the AL, I think its kind of little girlish. We assume he would have accepted the trade to the Cubs, correct? So he if vetoes this one, to the same city, that’s weak.
It's his opinion. He's comfortable in the NL.
He obviously felt strong enough about this to demand a no-trade in his contract.
I don’t understand how that makes him a puny little girl, but, okay.

i think this whole "exercising no trade" BS is because he wants to guarantee
his 22 mil option
i bet if the almost any team offered a package good enough to get him + his 22 mil option he might be interested

Per Gammons: No Beckham. It's all pitching.
Seems like a pretty crumby deal for SD.
That contract combined with his no-trade clause must’ve left SD without a lot of room to negotiate.

How does all pitching make it crumby?
They play in an extreme pitchers park so wouldn’t this fit their club best?
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Oh. My. God.

what?
Im asking how getting all pitching back makes this a crumby deal for SD?
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Did he say that?
It’s just a crumby deal overall. The overall talent SD would be receiving is pretty underwhelming.
Yeah unless I am reading this wrong which I have been known to do
