The 5-21 "Wish ill to Matt Stafford" Minors Thread
I just sold my Ford and purchased a Toyota just to spite the city of Detroit.
If you're looking to feel better, this is probably the night to do it.
The Oklahoma Redhawks have a late start at 9 vs. the Las Vegas 51s, now affiliated with the Toronto Blue Jays. 51 hitters aren't exactly patient, but they have a very veteran (old) lineup including guys like Russ Adams, Jason Lane, and Howie Clark. It's an interesting test for Neftali. He also faces former Rangers great and Buck Showalter nemesis Fabio Castro, who's having a wonderful year so far.
The Roughriders try to win a series against the Midland Rockhounds. The hounds throw out a pretty good lineup, but Chris Carter hasn't hit as well as expected, and the majority of their pop is left handed. It should be a good matchup for Kasey Kiker, if he chooses not to walk/hit the world.
The Blaze send out Richard Bleier, who was rocked his last start, against the Stockton Ports. They'll face Tyson Ross, a second round pick from last year's draft.
Finally, Crawfish Nation sends Carlos Pimentel against Richard Zagones and the Delmarva (delaware, maryland, Virginia) Shorebirds, who might be the least interesting team in the history of existance. Almost all their prospects strikeout a lot and doesn't walk much, we'll have to check if that team is managed by Marlon Byrd.
Discussion:
Look at all the relief arms in the system!
Matt Nevarez is rocking a 38.8 K% and a more-than-acceptable 10.3% BB. (He has struck out 1/2 the batters he faced so far in May, and only walked 5% of them). Setup man Yoon Hee Nam has been good despite his lacking arsenal and Mark Hamburger has an astounding 1.4% BB to go along with a 20% K and a 55% GB.
The entire Bakersfield bullpen save one sports sub-3 ERAs, with the standouts being Zach Phillips (4.4% BB, 28% K, 58% GB) and Evan Reed (13% BB, 23% K, 63% GB). Brennan Garr was also excellent, but he's still walking the world in Frisco.
The OKC bullpen is headlined by old veterans like Brian Gordon and Bryan Corey, but Beau Vaughan (8% BB, 28% K, 39% GB) has been a pleasant surprise.
So to you, who's the best relief prospect in the Rangers system?
Also, leave your worst wishes for the City of Detroit, their professional sports teams, and the curly haired future bust the lions just drafted here.

Matt Nevarez's may
has been simply astounding
.64 WHIP, 1.93 BB/9, 15.43(!!!!) K/9, 33.3(!!!) IF/F, 0 HR.
Essentially, he’s reduced every lineup he’s faced to Rod Barajas on a cold streak.

Nasty. I went with Phillips but Nevarez's stats are crazy.
Haven’t heard much about him though… Is he a FB/Slider guy? Curve?

Best relief prospect
What’s the over/under on Neftali starts before he’s brought up to the bullpen?
Folks, this would come at the cost of Kris Benson.
I say 2.

Tyson Ross
He was selected the pick after Robbie Ross and I was a little surprised that TX didn’t take him. He was reputed to have top rotation potential but there were those who were spooked by his mechanics and thought he would end up in the pen. To date he hasn’t done so well. I hope R&R does better; it just sucks that we have had to wait a year to see him pitch professionally.

wasn’t there also some injury history with him? I remember he was a 1st round guy until about May last year.

Looking thru the rosters this afternoon ...
Majewski’s off the DL, which means a RR OF’er needs to go back up to OKC. Harrison? Nope – Steve Murphy finally gets the AAA callup after about 1100 AA AB’s. Just in time for the Vegas trip. Nice bonus.
Clark Murphy is off the HIC roster and 5’7" MIF Leury Garcia has been added. I reckon Morrison will play lots of 1B going forward.
Sigh ... we are sooo gonna suck again next season.

yeah Smurph
has been the only OF hitting down there lately; he’s been on a good streak the last 10 days or so after starting slow.
I’m surprised Leury was added to a full season club; seems like he needs another year of short season where he can work on his hitting and getting another month of instruction. His defense is plus though; maybe that is why they called him up. That infield D is atrocious.

A really good swing and miss percentages in the MLs is something like 20%.
Using the Zone Contact Percentage as a guide for swing-and-miss pitches, the leaders in the ML are
Harden: 25% misses
Danks: 24%
Sanatana: 24%
Scherzer: 23%
Verlander: 20%

I’m sure he’s on a pitch limit.
How about Borbon also? 4-4 with a 2b. Hitting .301

Went to the Frisco game tonight.
-Kiker looked strong in the bullpen and the first couple innings, got a little wild after that and threw too many pitches.
-Strop looked good for 1 1/3, the Rockie scout sitting next to me was impressed. Another scout(team unknown) was disappointed he was pulled. Mid 90’s FB
-Smoak had the poor throw on the pickoff, but made a really nice play later on, diving in the hole and diving to the bag to beat the diving runner.
-Chris Carter looks like JMJ. Looked foolish against Strop, scouts were laughing.

Wasn't Strop the guy we got from the Rockies?
If so I find it funny a Rockies scout was impressed with a guy they let go a few months ago

Yeah
He didn’t really have much to say when the other scout asked him, “What happened with that?” I think he was needling him, saying, “I sure hope we get to see him go 2 tonight.”

I'm pretty sure
it wasn’t the scouts decision on letting Strop go.
