Nice commercial

I have to admit I was expecting this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPkMUU9tUqk

but I like that commercial as well.

I have lived in OKC

for sixteen years and I have never seen that commercial. That’s pretty funny. They do have good BBQ, but Earl’s and Leo’s is better.

Earl's?????

I’ve only been in OKC for 4 years, but the best bbq I’ve found thus far is Van’s Pig Stand. I’ve been thoroughly underwhelmed by Earl’s in 4 trips. Where is Leo’s? Needless to say, I’m a bit of a bbq connoussieur.

Memphis is a fun place to visit

Lots to do there for 3-5 days or so. Couple of great music museums, Beale st, Peabody, Mud Island, Graceland, phenomenal pork BBQ, casinos, the mississip, great music, etc.

Been there 3 times; enjoyed each time about the same.

I'm trying to figure out how any place in New York or Iowa could make the cut

I think I real BBQ face off would be the best Texas place, the best KC place, the best Memphis/Mississippi place, and best Southern place.

Iowa and New York? Probably as known for their BBQ is as Texas is for its sushi

But that doesn't mean

there can’t be a great place there. I grew up in Buffalo, and when I first got here there was no place to get real good chicken wings. Now there are quite a few that have decent wings. Likewise, when I grew up you simply could not get good Mexican food in Buffalo, but now there are a few good places. Food is just so…what’s the word…diverse and varied in every town of even modest size these days.

You’ll always have purists saying you can’t get this or that food anywhere but such and such place in the original location. But if you’re doing a blind taste test I bet you can find really good sushi or BBQ in any large city. Come on, we’re talking about BBQ sauce, here, not plutonium or something.

I guarantee Bobby Flay

could make some good BBQ in NY. He’s already got Southwestern fare mastered.

I’d take that bet, and i’d give you odds to boot.

My point is that

every large city has immigrants that can cook just like home. It’s no less authentic when my mother in law cooks in my kitchen than it is in hers in Penang. And BBQ simply isn’t as difficult as nuclear fission. No one would be freaking out if Iran was on the verge of acquiring authentic Memphis BBQ. Actually, come to think of it, pork probably doesn’t go over so well in that part of the world, so I guess people would freak out a bit. New strategy, drop pulled pork on Tehran.

Having lived in....

three states over the last 7 years and traveled extensively all over the U.S. in that time I have the hardest time finding good BBQ. Mexican, Italian, Greek, etc. I seem to find solid places all over the country. Not BBQ. I’m not sure why that is but it’s true from my experience.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had people in an area tell me “oh we have a great BBQ place here. Go to…..”. Never works out for me. Well almost never. I had some of the best BBQ I’ve ever had in Wenatachee WA. of all places. Turns out the cook was from Texas.

by bdavison94 on May 25, 2009 9:06 AM CDT up reply actions

To continue to play devil's advocate

I suspect that “best” is pretty subjective. They may think their BBQ is great, but it’s not what you expect so you disagree, though they probably haven’t had the “real” thing and so the bar is low.

You never know, though. The very best hamburger I’ve ever had was in a nameless, hole in the wall bar & grill somewhere on route 75 in southern OK in 1992 on my way to TX. I don’t even remember the name of the place and when I tried to go back it was gone and a gas station was in its place. Hamburgers are obviously easier than BBQ, but you just never know where you’ll find a gem.

G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....

by t ball on May 25, 2009 10:32 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't disagree with that....

My point was that for some reason good BBQ (in my opinion) is harder to replicate (and I don’t know why but i have some ideas) than other foods so you’re comment earlier about the blind taste test is suspect to me (and BT).

by bdavison94 on May 25, 2009 10:53 AM CDT up reply actions

But......

by luck alone you could stumble on the outlier and “prove” us wrong.

by bdavison94 on May 25, 2009 10:54 AM CDT up reply actions

Theory

there has been a lot more people moving TO the south from other parts of the U.S. than FROM it. The northeast, for example gets immigration from all over the world, but not much from the southern BBQ land. Also, some of these places have their own BBQ traditions that are very different from, say, Memphis style, and not something people who grew up eating Memphis BBQ will like.

G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....

by t ball on May 25, 2009 11:03 AM CDT up reply actions

also the wood used to cook it

mesquite and/or hickory may be hard to come by in the northeast, and that makes all the difference.

True

We had maple trees in my yard and made our own syrup, and oaks, birches and elms abound, but hickory and mesquite are not around.

That place borderline sucks

Great atmosphere, mediocre food.

Circle BBQ on the southside gives Coeky’s a run, but not the Vouz.

Is that your take as well, Bdav?

I haven't actually been....

It seems like every time I’m in Memphis (for work) it’s a Monday and that’s the one day of the week they are closed. People in the area that I’ve talked to swear by Rendezvous over Corky’s and Interstate. I’ve had Corky’s and thought it was really good. Interstate kind of sucked to me.

I ate at the Germantown Commissary one time and that was solid BBQ. Surprisingly they had fantastic tamales. Don’t really know why the tamale is such a popular menu item in the Memphis area but it is.

I’m not sure Memphis style is really for me. Love good Carolina style and of course good Texas BBQ.

by bdavison94 on May 25, 2009 9:01 AM CDT up reply actions

Memphis style

Me either. I’m generally not a rib guy, but oh man, Corky’s dry rub ribs are the only Q I’ve ever eaten that gave authentic smoked brisket a run for it’s money.

Memphis style IS better than that KC crapola, however. Those are the cretins that judge it by the sauce (no offense, T).

I agree w/ you on Carolina, though, and they definitely do the best pulled pork, which is an underrrated badass of a smoked meat in Tejas. I much prefer Eastern style, the vinegar-based w/out the absolutely pointless ketchup additives. Meh. Piedmonters fucking up perfectly good meat w/ tomatoes.

But you should check rendezvous out, in my glorious, unsolicited opinion. Really cool place to even just grab a beer or two, and w/in walking distance of most of the great watering holes. Both times I ate there it was lunch time. Could be diff at night.

Sauce

I don’t judge BBQ by the sauce, just needed a substance to pair with Plutonium. I could have said pork, I guess, would have had the alliteration going then. BBQ is not my favorite food anyway. I like it, but it’s a couple notches after really good steak and several Asian dishes.

It's on the list of things to do in Memphis

I get there at least 3-4 times a year so eventually I’ll make it happen.

With you on the vinegar based.

I've eaten at Cousin's and it's not bad

but I don’t think it would rate among the top 5 bbq joints in Ft Worth.

I'd go Railhead, Angelo's, Cousin's

Precipitous dropoff after that.

I wouldn’t eat Coulters to get the taste of dog shit out of my mouth.

Not much of a fan of Risky’s either.
