He's been really focused on a fastball-slider combination since late April with an occasional change up.

He seems to be in control of that fastball-slider combo. Lots of grounders and Ks the last few times out.

EG

has some pondering thoughts on the rotation and CD. He thinks BMac might go to the pen when Padilla comes back and playing CD through his slump might hurt him longterm.

I can’t argue much with his BMac logic. On CD, I am not too sure what to do. If we see the Rangers start to play AJ and Hack at 1B more then we know which way they are headed.

You have to stick with your young stater

Its his first full start to a year, let him get out their and pitch and learn and do his thing… Remember when everyone wanted Matt Harrison out of the lineup immeidietly, that wouldve been a bad choice as it turns out… Give the guy this season to pitch, let him learn.

This is our year.

relax

Holland will get plenty of starts this year

i dont see why people think there is a rush to get him into games so soon

furthermore, he will get plenty of starts when pitchers get hurt

id rather see us trade Padilla if we are so desperate to get Holland into the rotation

lastly, did i miss where Holland gave up 3 runs in that game?…lets see how he does against the yanks

at this point, has he honestly proven he is better than McCarthy

by Horns130 on May 23, 2009 9:53 PM CDT up reply actions

see Joba

by Jayslick on May 23, 2009 10:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Then trade someone

I just dont think it is appropriate to send BMac to the pen…i also dont think it maximizes his value

and as i said, i dont think Holland is going to sport a .00000001 ERA like 1/2 the board does, i want to go with the setup that gives us the best chance to win this year and that is most likely BMac, not Holland

Also, if Feldman cant go 7 innings, i wouldnt be opposed to seeing him back in the pen

I do agree though that you dont want him going back and forth between starting and the pen (although we use Holland in LR, whereas Joba was a setup guy, aka, apples and oranges) but i dont think 2 starts merits a change in approach

lastly, can we see how he does against a real team (yankees)

of course the team wins b/c they play hard, whether its for him, themselves, their teammates, maybe he’s a hell of a guy, maybe he gives them all hanjes after the game, but looking at the team, there are guys you should PH for at a certain moment, and matchups you wanna make sure you minimize, or avoid or make sure they come up, and you better know when those situations are happening.

they have multiple guys in the organization whose whole job is to compute numbers so that if Eddie G is 1-22 against Erstad, Ron Washington damn knows about it.

I think if his producton is still around a .700 ops in a few months and our coaches see there's truly a problem... then, yah. Send him to AAA to try to fix it.

But right now I stil believe and see no reason for all the doom and gloom and “DFA” bandwagons.

He’s still hitting for power, and he hasn’t let this stretch effect his BB-rate too much (it’s a tad higher than last year) and he hasn’t carried it over to the field at all, where he’s been beastly.

Although I still don’t understand why there being a lot of good 1b on other teams has any bearing on what we should do in season with a hotshot young slugger who’s scuffling right now.

Yeah, I don't understand

what other 1B has to do with it, but I do see what a playoff run has to do with it.

You can beat bad teams with bad pitchers with a few longballs, but I think the Rangers are going to need some more consistent offense to beat the better pitchers.

I’m not saying CD has to be sent down now, or DFAed, but he has to pull out of this before the all star break, or I suspect he will be fixing it in AAA.

He was incredibly hyped and for the most part has delivered. At the very least above average and his good seasons are easily All-Star caliber.

Maybe it's the fact that he doesn't possess Piazza power

or something, but seriously, he’s a catcher who’s already won two batting titles, plays pretty good D and still only 26. As long as he doesn’t get hurt, I think he’ll be a perennial All-Star even in Minnesota.

well

he did have a righty specialist face all lefties and then 2 lefty specialists (sort of, they at least have heavy splits) face all righties. In consecutive innings. You have to try hard to do that.

Actually he had our 7th inning pitcher in the 7th.

And I guess he decided before the game that Eddie would be the 8th inning guy instead of CJ, since CJ would have to pitch instead of Frankie.

by octoberty on May 23, 2009 8:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Well, I can understand the CJ issue

but the rest is just dumb. Guardado and O’Day couldnt’ have flipped? Maybe you justify Guardado coming in later because you don’t want him to go out there with runners on base. But still, the splits are really bad for both guys (though small samples).

"I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the [MLB] for guys to fall in love with [the Rangers’s] sloppy seconds." (thanks cstorm)

by ab03 on May 23, 2009 8:27 PM CDT up reply actions

Do you have lifetime splits for Eddie against the players he faced?

Or the ones he didn’t? That would be the primary variance there…if one or more hitters owned Eddie, then change things up. The numbers against O’Day would be negligible.

you're a bastard for making me look this up

Guardado against the guys he faced
Tejada – 3/7 Hr, 2B
Berkman – 0/2
Lee – 1/8

Guardado against the guys he didn’t face
Erstad – 2/22
Bourn – 0/1

Which all suggests that it’s not really an issue – But really the issue is that Eddie at this stage in his career is just a LOOGY and should be used as such and O’Day is much better against righties.

If they had brought in Eddie in teh 7th, might not have gotten to face Erstad but would have faced Bourn. And you have O’Day to pitch against 2 righties and a switch.

Such over reaction around here.

If he called it intuition, would that make people happier? Do you know that statistically, “women’s intuition” is right far more times than wrong? Intuition involves using other parts of the brain (imaginative & creative) to problem solve, and is often more correct than what logic tells us.

He is obviously making a fair amount of correct decisions, despite what the “armchair QBs” think.

women's intuition?

I would like to see evidence of that.

And the issue is that he justifies difficult (on face incorrect) decisions on intuition, and he’s also credited his intuition with bad decisions. And really, baseball isn’t so complex that you need to use the imaginative and creative parts of the brain. Logic will do just fine.

I don’t like his intuition and I think if he would be a little bit more thoughtful then he could probably make better decisions. I don’t think he’s inherently dumb, just a little too reliant on feelings in the moment. I think he has a good grasp of how certain players do in certain situations but just tries to run in the moment or be a player’s coach and go against logic.

But I also think people blow out of proportion the effect of his decisions. They usually matter very little.

I've read (watched?) a Psych/Scientific study on it.

They used MRI studies to prove the idea that women often use other parts of the brain when solving difficult situation probabilities…and the girls were right far more often than guys.

But yeah, any manager is just about as good as the players he manages.

No, it wouldn't

Given two equally likely outcomes, a random choice means you will be right half of the time, so any pattern of thought better be an improvement upon that. There is no reason why intuition shouldn’t give you a better than 50% success ratio. What’s the success rate for using logic?

My understanding is that intuition is less of an active thinking process than one that is closer to a reflex. Your brain gives a feedback based on your knowledge, perception, and experience. It probably used parts of the brain involved with imagination and creativity, but I know nothing of the field will won’t comment further, but I don’t see there is any reason why logic cannot be combined with imagination to create a greater effect.

For example, why does Ron elect to pitch Eddie against right handed batters? Reality (historical records) tells you that he would fare better against lefties, and unless the batter has some type of reverse split, or does exceptionally poorly against him, there is no reason to believe that it would be a better choice to have Eddie (rather than someone like O’Day) pitch to them. It is that Ron’s intuition knew something that his active thinking process did not and thought Eddie would be the best choice to get these hitters out? It may be, perhaps he noticed that Tejeda had a particularly quick reaction time in the game and needed something slower thrown to him; perhaps he thought Berkman looked really comfortable as a lefty hitter and wanted to turn him around. Perhaps he thought Eddie was throwing exceptionally well. However, he would still have to know those things in this case, and unless that information was not processed in his brain, it would be considered an active thinking process, and therefore logic. Intuition is still based on the information that you know, and creativity is no different – it’s just a way of combining the information that you know in unconventional ways. You can’t predict the future with intuition; you can’t know something that you don’t know with intuition.

Sure, when Ron goes with his gut, he is right sometimes, but he is also wrong other times and in baseball, you rarely have certainty. The best you can do is improve the probability of an outcome. Even with Eddie on the mount, his chance of getting each of those outs is still greater than 50%, but you can improve those odds by having somebody else (like O’day) pitch to Tejada and have Eddie pitch to the lefties instead. The correct decision in such a situation is not the one that ended up giving the favorable outcome in one individual event, it’s the one that gives the greatest number of times that you will get the favourable outcome when you repeat the event a million times.

you're begging the question a bit

Yes, if the Marlins thought they would get good value back from the Rangers, they would trade Nolasco – but they would have done that before the season started.

Now, if the question is can the rangers get away with a slightly lesser package than was needed before the season started, I think the answer is “not appreciably so.” I still think it would have to be something that would blow them away. Salty + Stud MLB ready pitching prospect.

Meh.

It was still a bad contract at the time, imo.

Remember

when we laughed at the Phillies for getting the Ho? I feel good

by BEW on May 24, 2009 7:39 AM CDT up reply actions

why

1) ibanez isnt going to keep this up all year long
2) look at his stats only vs the nats
3) they had to give up a LOT of money + picks for not that much (more) value than they would have gotten ffrom burrell

ibanez isnt suddenly turning into wiilie mays here…

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

4-1, Angels.

Tori Hunter strikes again.

Man, he is solely responsible for them being about 3-4 games better than they would be otherwise.

stupid angels

4-1.

i hate torii hunter.

the preceding post was a great success.

You’ll see. Lots of warning track outs.

You set that up for me and ill prove it.

if nothting else

this interleague play has shown me how much I hate NL ball. No thank you. Watching pitchers flail away nightly would make baseball nearly unwatchable and then what would I do in the summer between hockey and football?

butbutbut

thats baseball as it was MEANT to be!!!

/baseballpurist

(i agree with you by the way, look at zambrano – you pay a guy to PITCH and then he gets hurt legging out a bunt? no thanks…i mean what if you pick up peavy’s 22 mil option and his first start he steps on 1b wrong and pulls a mateo?)

Loney! The anti-Torii.

by Texas_Dawg on May 23, 2009 11:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Awesome.

Shields throws it away trying to pick Orlando Hudson off first. Hudson all the way to 3rd with only 1 out.

still think the injury rule is stupid

…Loney’s had 2 hits tonight. Not sure CD has ever done that.

4 up after Sunday.

by Texas_Dawg on May 24, 2009 12:46 AM CDT reply actions

that will get you dfa'd

but I’m happy to see it. Kershaw taking the hill for the Dodgers tomorrow. If we can sweep the Astros while Blue wins two of three from the Angels we’re pretty much back where we were before fucking detroit.

Isn't it Billingsley?

Either way, it’s a good.

Kershaw pitched Friday.

Sunday is Matt Palmer (5-0, 4.26 ERA) vs. Chad Billingsley (6-1, 2.51 ERA).

Good god

Matt Palmer is 5-0. Really?

Just another terribly lucky mediocre Angel pitcher

His FIP is 5.09 and his BABIP is a ridiculously low .210. So hopefully by the time we face him he’ll have regressed to where he’s supposed to be (which is scrub-level, according to his career #’s).
