Some good news
Back as recently as last season, looking at the minor league box scores was often the highlight of the baseball day. Minor league performances have been an afterthought so far this season, but especially after an ugly loss like today's, it is worth taking a look so you can see performances like this:
Jake Brigham -- 5 IP,3 hits, 0 walks, 8 Ks, 0 runs
Martin Perez -- 4 IP, 4 hits, 2 walks, 9 Ks, 0 runs
Guillermo Moscoso -- 8 IP, 2 hits, 0 walks, 11 Ks, 0 runs*
* This isn't Moscoso's actual final line -- I'm choosing to omit the results from the 9th after they ran him back out there to try to finish out the game. He gave up a walk and a couple of hits and was pulled for Brennan Garr, who allowed a couple of inherited runs to score.

If Moscoso is turning a corner, this could mean big things for our bullpen later this year.

I would just like to say
Perez dreams of putting these numbers half this good up in AAA four seasons from now:
ERA G GS CG SHO SV IP H R ER HR BB SO GO/AO AVG
5.54 8 7 0 0 0 39.0 46 26 24 3 20 29 0.53 .299

Heh
I’d forgotten that. Paul cracks me up, but he’s like a lot of us here when posting over at minorleagueball — downright indignant at the lack of acknowledgment our favorite prospects get from other teams’ fans.

hes a huge tool
and we ruined the validity of his internet poll in the offseason!!
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

Split Starts
These split starts are doing Martin good. This is because of rotation congestion, I know, but when does this work itself out? Will we have rotation congestion in BAK once the Hickory rotation ALL moves up (because they are ALL doing quite well to this point) and maybe one or two starters stay in BAK (Or wherever the team moves to) to start the new year next year?
When do we start seeing enough daylight to let everyone get a start because it seems to me that rotation congestion is only going to get worse next year.
A great problem to have, but if it doesn’t work itself out I can see it become a hindrance
What's the rumpus?
I don't know that it's solely cause of rotation congestion.
It’s also a way to limit the innings of a guy who turned 18 just before the season started and is very young for a full season league and another who’s coming off some pretty serious injuries and needs to work his way back to a regualr workload.
I think if they’d wanted M-Per and Brigham to have their own starting slots to start the season they wouldn’t have had any problems giving Springston the boot.
This is 100% by design, imo.

Limit innings
Fair enough. I thought if this was the goal they’d give him his start and just bring in the ’pen after 5. But a strict split start program makes sense as well. Because seriously how can you keep a guy like Sprinston down? heh
So going forward with the innings limits and the like, what is the goal for this year? And do innings limitations hamper his upward matriculation? Would the team be less likely to promote him when the innings are still an issue?
I’m caught between two minds with Perez because as well as he’s doing in HIC I’d love to see him in BAK by the end of the year. However, I don’t want to hurt his physical development in doing so.
The Holland promotion has spoiled us. Being THAT aggressive with a blue chip prospect gives us all a notion that it COULD happen with other blue chippers
What's the rumpus?
Difference though
Holland went to college so he could be pushed a bit.

Perez could be put on the Feliz track
They might have him just skip Bakersfield entirely.
He pitched only 61.2 innings last season plus some non-official innings probably. I think they’re fine letting him get at least 100 this year but would probably limit him if he makes it past that. I don’t think they’d let the IP restrictions prevent them from making a promotion with him. He’s striking out well over 10 guys/9 innings now, doesn’t have much of a control issue, and he’s been pretty unhittable all season. Its starting to look like there just isn’t much left for him to do in A ball.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
Last year
Holland and Feliz both made exactly 17 starts at Clinton, then got promoted.
Martin’s at 9 games (basically all starts, y’know, “tandem” starts).
I think he’ll get BAK this year, but…probably after 17 appearances.

That's probably about what he'll see before being promoted
but remember also that Holland and Feliz broke out last year while Perez had already looked great before then. Its not to say that Feliz wasn’t extremely talented, but there weren’t many that saw him being this good this soon. I have no problem if they leave Perez in Hickory until he makes 17 starts, but I just don’t think he really needs to be there for much longer.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

I wouldn't have a problem...
…if they left him there all season.
I’m not sure that an 18 year old whose innings are being limited necessarily needs to be in the Cal League, particularly in that joke of a park in Bakersfield.

That's why I could see them doing what they did with Feliz
and just promote him to AA. Its a big jump, but its not crazy to think that he could handle it.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
This is what I see happening.
I don’t think they’re in any hurry at all with Perez.
Feliz was 20 when they made that transition with him, and a lot of people questioned whether or not that jump was reasonable at the time. I have no idea why you’d put a dude who turned 18 a month ago in AA. That’s hyper-aggressive.
I am tempted to agree, but...
there is no challenge for Perez in Hickory. In games where his line is less than perfect, you can tell he’s tinkering up there. When he’s really pitching, he’s untouchable.
Yes he needs to be stretched out, but does that stretching out have to take place in Hickory? I would like to see him challenged a bit. I’m not really fearful that the Cal league would destroy Martin; he doesn’t give up many deep fly balls (his hr/9 is microscopic).
I dunno.

Well, I shouldn’t say “no way,” but it is extremely unlikely.
If he’s really fast-tracked, 2011…2012 or 2013 seems more likely.

Probably part that
but they were also pitching shutout games at that time. I don’t know what they’re pitch count was going into the innings, but unless they were at 110 or 115 pitches going into the 9th, I think its okay to let them try and go the full 9. These aren’t extremely young arms where you’re worried about them getting too many innings like with Perez.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Actually the "good news" (not to celebrate an injury) is that Ervin Santana's totally FUBAR
His velocity is way way down this year and it’s pretty apparent the non-surgery route that he took isn’t working.

I gotta say
I enjoyed watching him in person the other night. Didn’t get a hit, but stood on top of the plate, quick bat, and put a charge into one that went to the base of the wall in dead center.
I liked his tenacity w/ Kiker after the bullpen session also. Those guys are both bulldogs.
