Do you see how

hypocritical it is to not buy into a small sample from Davis but buy into a small sample from Jones.

-The Outlaw

by Gdawg on May 27, 2009 12:53 AM CDT up reply actions

its not even a sample size issue

its a situational issue. If he had caught up to a 90mph fastball just once then I would have more confidence. But he hit a few changeups.

you obviously understood that; now you’re just arguing for the sake of arguing.

"I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the [MLB] for guys to fall in love with [the Rangers’s] sloppy seconds." (thanks cstorm)

by Jayslick on May 27, 2009 12:55 AM CDT up reply actions

and the jones thing

your position: he looks slow
my position: the results don’t bear that out. even if it is small sample size, no sample of results says he’s slow. the only thing that does is your eyes and his lumbering style.

how can that possibly go in your favor? how?

"I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the [MLB] for guys to fall in love with [the Rangers’s] sloppy seconds." (thanks cstorm)

by ab03 on May 27, 2009 12:58 AM CDT up reply actions

Slow doesn't mean bad

Slow often leads to bad fielding, but that doesn’t mean that the results (especially over 12 chances) will be affected by that.

How do you not understand this?

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw

by Gdawg on May 27, 2009 1:03 AM CDT up reply actions

ok but you have no objective determination of slow

just your eyes. you have no objective determination of fielding at all. the onyl objective determination of fielding says he’s good.

if you were to pick that he’s a bad fielder, it means you are discounting objective evidence for your subjective evidence. yeah, I’m not doing that

"I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the [MLB] for guys to fall in love with [the Rangers’s] sloppy seconds." (thanks cstorm)

by ab03 on May 27, 2009 1:05 AM CDT up reply actions

Its not hard to see when someone is slow

I don’t need to time him out there to see how slow he is.

I’m not discounting any objective evidence. I’m discounting your raping of statistical analysis by trying to say that 12 chances by a defensive player can lead to any kind of reasonable assessment. The only objective determination of fielding for Andruw Jones isn’t out there. There is no statistic anywhere that doesn’t have huge inaccuracy problems with small sample sizes.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw

by Gdawg on May 27, 2009 1:09 AM CDT up reply actions

really?

answer me this: if I had just said, in 12 times, he looks like he’s getting good reads, would that be better. How about if I had jsut said, no he’s not, he’s fast.

You’ve seen maybe 30 chances where he’s ran and you’ve dubbed him slow. Of course, you’ve probably never seen a chance where he actually had to run fast. yet, you’ll just choose to call him slow.

Ill make these easy for you. he’s not slow, he’s fast. he’s getting great reads. i don’t need numbers to tell me that.

"I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the [MLB] for guys to fall in love with [the Rangers’s] sloppy seconds." (thanks cstorm)

by ab03 on May 27, 2009 1:20 AM CDT up reply actions

I've figured it out

You’re blind. That’s got to be it. Because if you can’t see what everyone else is seeing (including the Rangers themselves), then I don’t know what other explanation there is. The guy has been slow to get to fly balls and he’s been slow running the bases. I haven’t dubbed him slow. He’s done that himself by being not fast.

Its interesting that he is getting great reads in LF, but is unable to do so in RF.

And you had just said that in his 12 chances in LF, that he looks like he’s getting good reads, that would be your opinion and I couldn’t argue much with it. Instead, you try to pass off your opinion as some objective evidence that Jones is clearly a good LF, isn’t slow, and is a good option in the OF even when compared to Murphy.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

yes, exactly

I know CD can hit those FBs, but he still hasnt shown that he can do that consistently this year. When he starts catching up to and making contact with hard fastballs, then I think we can proclaim that he is “out of it”… Im still dumbfounded as to what Joba was doing on that change up he floated up there for CD.

BMac might be pushed back a day

Probably discussed in the GDT. EG says BMac may be pushed back a day because of the # of pitches he threw vs Houston. Hunter might get the start forcing Madrigal to be sent down between games of the DH. Or Mathis could start which probably means Benson gets DFA’d.

I vote for Mathis to start and then keeping him in the bullpen as the long reliever.

From that thread
The Ranger commentators just compared the Yankees to a Wedding cake with no forks/knives and napkins. They said the lack of a quality bench and bullpen (outside Mo) is basically going to lead to our demise.
Can someone remind them of who they are? Rangers haven’t had any pitching (outside Ryan) for decades.

While this is technically true, they missed the point of Josh and Tom’s metaphor. They were illustrating how the Yankees spend so much money on starters but seem to pay little attention to a bench or bullpen.

im more in depth than that, for example,

when Lewen was talking defense today and ratings i really wanted him to delve deeper and go beyond fielding % but it was obvious he wouldnt.

i like the #’s and im willing to commit tilme to understanding what each stats trying to show, but im not a “235, 235 matches”
“what ray?” “the number of matches on the ground, 235”

some of the guys here are awesome at that stuff, and thats why i ask when i need a breakdown of how a stat is formulated to get a better grasp. it came up not long ago with a newer stat i needed some explanation on.

some of that shit is really useful, some of it if you just look at numbers and dont breakdown their meaning you miss the point.

I made the commute from Minnesota this week

just a day’s drive if you’re intense enough

Yeah

my Dad was a UT alum, and we never could afford baby sitters or cable, so my weekend entertainment was either Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman or the Rangers.

You know I became a Ranger fan in 1990

My friend gave me a Juan Gonzalez baseball card, and i followed him up through the minors to the Rangers. Then I started following the Rangers after that. It was tough to follow here in California but I studied the box scores everyday. Juan was awesome, even though I suspect he was juiced

Good night to the all the Ranger fans. There is a division title in my dreams.
It was nice talking to Ranger fans. Only Dodger and Angel fans here pfft, losers…well the Dodgers are in first too but the Angels can languish in 2nd place for the rest of the season, that’s where they are going to stay. Here’s to our 1st place Texas Rangers damn it!!!

I know it's 24 hours from LA to Austin

(I had some friends who made the drive…that’s how I know). So it’s probably somewhere in that range.

I've also made a drive from LA

to Austin, that was much less fun because I broke down in the Arizona desert. But still, if it wasn’t for that, that could probably be a day’s drive at worst.

West coast trips are great.

I did a circle from Dallas to Seattle, back thru Cali & Vegas. Then the Grand Canyon. The only tough part is West TX.

hey scoop

how long did it take you to do it/know about how much you spent?

ive thought about doing that this summer possibly…

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

Scout to KG: On Sandoval: "Man, that fat [expletive]-er can hit."

It was cheap, but I had a place to stay 1/2 the time.

Drove to Boulder,CO and stayed w/ friends for a day. From there to Seattle, that took a while but we made it in 1 trip up thru WY, MT, ID, and WA. Had to take turns driving w/ the girl I went with, so got some nap time in. 3 days in Seattle w/ friends. Only expenses were gas, food, and booze w/ the friends.

Next stop was in Bend, Oregon. Cheap motel. Then to Vegas for a night. Hotel, food, gambling. Next day Grand Canyon- cheap(the price, not the view). Then we hit up some friends in Sante Fe, NM. Next day back to Dallas.

Overall- 5 days of driving plus about 6 days of visiting. This was ’96, but other than what I lost in Vegas, all other expenses were about $500 for gas, food, booze, and 2 nights hotels. Gas was cheaper, and my little truck got nice mileage. And having places to stay helped immensely.

by scoop16 on May 27, 2009 9:42 AM CDT up reply actions

not bad at all...

im thinking of doing kind of the same thing

Texas to CO (place to stay) – one day
CO to SEA (place to stay – with a day stop in between
SEA to San Jose (place to stay)
San Jose to Grand Canyon (hotel)
Grand Canyon to Albuquerque, NM (hotel)
back to Dallas

so thats 7+ days
5000 miles
at ~30 MPG and 2.50/gal cost (avg)

comes out to ~420 for gas + hotels + trip length = can def do haha

thx

We just let things happen organically.

No planned stops outside of friends, Vegas, and the Grand Canyon. One that caught us by surprise, and that I would recommend, was Williamette National Forest in Oregon. Beautiful, snow-capped in late May.

Also, got to Grand Canyon at dusk. Perfect purple skies, found a place under a ridge at the top and took in the sights w/ a few beers.

Everything else was just ad-libbed, viewing Americana. Also, I’m not sure how far out of the way it would of been, but I’ve been to Glacier National Park in MT before. It’s the most beautiful place in America, IMO.

Arguing with those

that are ignorant of advanced (or even basic) metrics is as frustrating as you make it. Make your case, if they don’t agree move on. It’s difficult to really “teach” someone sabermetrics in casual conversation.

Up to .296 / .352 / .580 on the year with 9 steals in 10 attempts.

Also providing the best RF defense in baseball, according to this.

At this point, he is a top 10 player in the AL.

Those years in the minors

learning how to hit the curveball seemed to do some good.

If CD doesn’t build on last night, maybe we can send him for a similar treatment on how to hit the fastball.
