all star voting

sorry if i missed this on the board.

http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090527&content_id=4985248&vkey=allstar2009&fext=.jsp

Jeter is leading the AL in votes of course.

rangers rank by position:

davis is 5th

kinsler is 1st

young is 2nd

andrus is 3rd (!)

salty is 5th (!)

hamilton is 2nd

nelson cruz is 7th (!)

andruw jones (!!) is 12th

i could be wrong, but i think jones would have had to have been a write in (murphy was the other OF on the ballot right??)

anyway, don't forget to vote for those you think deserve it.

some confusion

the article says Adam Jones, but the graph says andruw jones.

i’m inclined to think andruw isn’t really 12th.

certainly

kinsler and young deserve to be allstars (along with Francisco and possibly millwood). maybe even andrus.

but there are definitely players that have been better than them at those positions that deserve to START. either way, in my voting, if a ranger is CLOSE to the best, i vote for him.

i think i’d like to see davis in the home run derby. luckily for him you can’t strike out.

Michael Young does not deserve to be an All-Star.

I’d say Cruz + Kinsler + 2 Frank + Millwood right now.

Nelly Cruz: .932 OPS, 9/10 in steals, superlative RF defense… the dude’s a stud.

if MY has a 330 or 340 BA

i would say he would deserve an all-star vote. That is pretty darnn good. Saying that, he would be a sure bet for All-star at SS. At 3B, I would put him behind Longoria and Arod. I can’t think of anyone else I would put him behind.

Who would you go with over Kinsler? Hill?

They’re close offensively with Hill having an advantage, but Kinz has been much better defensively.

Fangraphs has them tied at 22.6 RAR so far this year.

And tie goes to the home team, at least when it comes to All-Star voting, right?

Did you know that Kinsler

as of last night now has only 5 errors in his last 82 games. I hope he keeps it up.

That should rank him at or above average for 2B FPct. I don’t trust Range Factors but watching his play he has to be among the leagues best.

Kinda, nervous watching him chase down popups though.

Those steals against millwood shouldn’t count on Salty’s stats. I think the middle of the field all deserve to go (maybe not start) and Fx2 should be the closer.

Right now only Kinsler should be at the #1 spot

and the 2 M&M boys for the Twins should be #1s at their positions, Griffy and Hamilton should not be in the starting OF positions, no problem with Jeter starting at SS but would love to see Elvis make the team, MY i think should be the back up at 3rd but when all is said and done that clown from New York will over take him at 3rd, when it’s all over i think the Rangers will send 2 to the game (as unfair as that is) if all stays the same by July it will likely be Kins and Frankie

hamilton among outfielders (i guess divide by 3 to get a more fair look??)

he doesn’t even qualify. but if he did…

avg- 24th
ops- 18th
runs- 31st

sb-26th

avg- 11th

the all star game is about stats

and jeter is the 2nd or 3rd best hitting SS this year in the AL. that’s all. he has had a better year than hamilton so far.

heck, head to head he has had a better year.

i don’t like the guy, but objectively jeter is more deserving than hammy.

that said, if a ranger is 2nd or 3rd best at his position, i vote for him.

Stats is fine

but those are the wrong stats to use for this specific blog. Nelson Cruz has been one of the best OFs in the league this year. Derek Jeter has not. Check out the fangraphs player values. Not only is Jetes still an absolute butcher in the field, but almost all his offensive stats have fallen off the face of the Earth.

fiedling ability

has pretty much nothing to do with all star game. it’s about hitting stats…pretty much the basic line of avg/obp/slg , hr/rbi and if you are a stud at stealing bases that helps a little tiny bit.

Was thinking about a new All-Star weekend challenge...

set up standing targets around he field with certain point values dependent on which side of the plate the batter hits from.

It’s like that NHL competition where they have to break the clay targets in the corners of the goal.

I don’t know, haven’t thought TOO much about it, but I think it could work.

by cmkelly29 on May 27, 2009 6:20 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

btw heh..

it’s a hitters challenge obviously.

by cmkelly29 on May 27, 2009 6:28 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'd like to see a "5 tools" kind of competition. Similar to the uber-lame thing the NBA does, only awesomer.

Throwing, hitting for power, and running speed would all be pretty easy.

Hitting for average and especially fielding might be tough, though.

I guess you could call it a “Best Tools” competition or something and cut fielding out.

How cool would it be to see the leahue’s burners get timed on their ability to run out an imaginary inside the park homerun?

Neat.

Of course the second someone pulls a hamstring trying to leg that out or has a shoulder explode trying to win the throw competition you know it’d end real quick.

Still, fun.

starters as of now…
c-mauer
1b-youkilis
2b-kinsler
3b-longoria
ss-jeter
of-bay
of-hamilton
of-ichiro

assume starting pitcher = greinke
first backup position players…
c- v martinez
1b-morneau
2b-hill
3b-inge (homers and rbi get him in young probably)
ss-barlet
of-adam jones
of-torii hunter
of-dye
need another catcher…believe it or not, looks like…barajas

oakland still needs a representative. only one that looks like a possibility is pitcher dallas braden.

need more pitchers…
bedard
weaver
halladay
porcello
papelbon
francisco
sherrill
buehrle
verlander
jackson

either 2 or 3 spots left on roster.

3 guys left i think. 1b cabrera, 2b pedroia and/or 3b young

I think Suzuki is a pretty good bet as the 3rd catcher.

He’s been pretty okay this year for a catcher, especially if you facotr in defense, where he’s supposedly very strong.

Though Napoli has been very good as well.

Maybe Holliday’s number will improve enough by then that they’ll just go with him.

He’s terrible.

You really think Dye gets in over Nelly Cruz? I suppose it’s possible, but only cause voters are retarded. Dye is one of the worst defenders on the planet.

And I’d think if Millwood’s numbers are anywhere close to where they are now he’d get the nod over Porcello or Jackson.
