MJH Interview With Danny Clark
This is a must read, such a wealth of information on some of the guys we, as prospectophiles, drool over every day.
Read it here.
On Perez:
We want him to come in around 110 this year. But he’s just a special player, ability-wise. He can put the fastball where he wants it, and it’s 94. He can drop the curve where he wants it and it‘s a plus pitch. His change is there now. He’s just on another level. (He has) Big league swagger.

That is quite the interview
Thanks. And thanks to MJH too.
I have an irrational hatred of Chris Davis because his Ks are way too ugly and irrational liking of Matt Harrison because he's a lefty - deal with it.

hell of an interview, and definately something a "Real Newspaper" wouldnt bother with b/c the information required to digest it is above 3rd grade general knowledge and reading
Beaven stuff was really interesting too
Inside Corner: Let’s talk about Blake Beavan. There’s been a lot of hand-wringing about his drop in velocity since turning pro.
DC: It’s fine. He was hitting 93 mph [Saturday] night. Remember, he’s just 20 years old.
I’m a big Blake Beavan fan. The thing he’s got that you just don’t see from many guys is total fastball command in the zone. Blake can get it over in any part of the zone he wants whenever he wants. We’re actually having him throw more 4-seamers and getting away from the 2-seamers for now to build some velocity back up and he’s learning he can succeed with that pitch. I’m not a guy who thinks that velocity is the be-all, end-all especially if you have the pitchability that Blake has.
I was there for his complete game and he got through all nine innings in 101 pitches. He just almost never gets out of the zone. Again [Saturday]: no walks and he got through seven in 98 pitches.
PS: after reading the Main stuff, it makes me think he isnt as coachable as i would like, hopefully that end matures over time

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

I don't think that is an accurate interpretation.
When DC said that Main didn’t resist, he meant it. I think sometimes they want a guy to figure some things out for himself. Sort of like how Maddux got McCarthy and Holland to bring their curveballs back without telling them to do it. They think it’s their own choice and they feel more confident about it. Know what I mean? But having had the benefit of reading DC when he made those comments, I can tell you that I didn’t get a sense at all that he had issues with Main’s coachability or attitude or work ethic or anything else.

im glad to hear that mike,
when he said he resisted, i took that to mean wasnt as willing to accept advice from those pushing his development as i would care, but you make it sound like he maybe had to understand what the effect were before he would fully buy into it, which is a lot different than resisting.
anyway, great interview. when u get stuff like this regularly, it makes me realize how absolutely nonessential the newspaper has become (other than for your bird cage). its funny, b/c they have spent so many years dumbing down their writing that they have reached a point where even if they wanted to write about and do in depth pieces like you or BBTiA produce, i just dont think their market base could adapt.
weird times my friend, and good stuff willl win out.

I like how the organization seems to be handling its pitchers
as far as innings, approach, assingments, etc. Encouraging notes there on several guys, especially Beavan, Main, and Kirkman. No encouragement necessary on Perez, he’s a monster.
I’d like to think that right now Chris Davis is getting the sort of wake up moment that Main has had, he’s just doing it at the major league level.

I was really concerned about replacing Rick Adair, but...
having read that interview, I feel much, much better. I especially liked:
I’m not a guy who thinks that velocity is the be-all, end-all especially if you have the pitchability that Blake has.
I love seeing 95+ mph fastballs as much as the next guy, but I’ll take a staff of guys with Greg Maddux-level velocity if they have good control.

yeah, i think to a certain extent, radar guns have been had an absolutely terrible effect on the game.

radar guns, and fantasy baseball
together make reading a lot of fan comments wierd. When I read comments over at minorleagueball I often get the sense that the poster views the world through whatever stats are needed for their fantasy team. Any pitcher with a K/9 less than 9 is just not worth talking about.
I also get a kick out of writers, scouts, fans, etc. calling someone who is over 6 feet tall “too small”. For baseball.

Agree with being relieved about the coordinator position.
Was also downcast about the pitching in the minors in general this year, and this is a much needed shot of positivity.

this is nice
Wieland is a guy I’ve got high hopes for (of course, I get my hopes up alot on prospects :P)
Joe Wieland. That really isn’t a secret, I guess. Commands all three pitches. He’ll show you sequences of pitches that you don’t see from a kid that age very often. Just an incredibly advanced approach. He’ll double up on the curve, double up on the change. A lot of guys when they get down 2-0 or have to throw a strike you know the fastball is coming. He can bring anything any time. He’s a guy I think you’ll see really take off this year.

we have such an amazing amount of prospects
and I hope I won’t ever take this for granted…even when they start producing at the major league level

!!
Inside Corner: In talking to Rick Adair last year, I got the impression that the book on Wilfredo is that he has a plus approach and sort of ordinary stuff. What are your thoughts on his ceiling?
DC: Well, the fastball is 89 or so, but I think that Boscan commands everything so well to both sides of the plate that makes up for it. His upside is big because of that. It’s not all about velocity and he‘s still got some growing to do.
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

just glad to see that hes throwing 89 and may add a few miles
for some reason i had it stuck in my mind that he was topping out at like 86-87 and read that as he was sitting at 89 now
hmmm may have read too much into that`
