Interesting.
I wonder if he’d be better or worse than Hicks, though if he’s more interested in horses maybe he’d be pretty hands off.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
I think he'd be another Hicks
maybe cheaper.
Why I said that
is because he doesn’t look like someone that’s passionate in baseball. He’s talking about how if this is the right commitment for him at his current age. With that said, I think he’s more interested in turning a profit then possibly spending money for a championship.
I could be wrong though.
Nervous
As bad as Hicks has been at times, I really think he (and the team) has turned a corner in the last couple of years (since bringing JD in and being committed to a long-term plan). This all makes me nervous that a new owner will sweep in and start screwing everything up. I guess that would be about right for this franchise…

My sentiments exactly
I like the way Hicks has let JD spend his dollars lately (Latin America, going above slot… being generally aggressive on the development side of things…). Don’t know if I ever thought I’d support how Hicks is running the Rangers, but I think they’ve been doing things right for a while, and they’re deservedly on a steep upward trajectory. It’s so much fun to watch it all being pieced together.
It would be perfectly fitting and Rangers-style to change ownership and pull the rug out.
I know there are other sob-stories in sports fandom, but I can’t think of many groups of fans that are more deprived and deserving of a good owner than Rangers fans.
Definitely agreed.
I’ve been making this point with many in the anti-Hicks crowd.
He has learned a lot after a very rough start (that came out of overspending (in attempt to win) on the wrong people), and the moves they’ve made in the last few years have largely been very good.
I agree with you, as well.
How come it seems like when things start going right for the Ranger, the other shoe has to drop? It’s like the scene in “The Jerk” when Navin R. Johnson finds himself in the phonebook and declares “Things are going to start happening to me NOW.” Then they cut to the crazy guy blindly pointing a name out in the phonebook to kill and he comes to “Johnson, Navin. R” and says “Sounds like a typical bastard. Die, Navin R. Johnson!!!!”

He has always wanted to buy a sports team
I should say he has always wanted to be a majority owner of a sports team. He had part ownership with the Mavs before Cuban. When all of this came out about hicks defaulting on his loans I thought McDavid would be the front runner to buy the Rangers if Big Daddy ever sold. That said I don’t think he would be a bad owner as long as he is hands off.
2009 Texas Rangers: Why The Hell Not Us?--ghtd36 on May 13, 2009
F David McDavid
Package us with LFC and sell us to the rich Kuwaitis,
we thought Hicks was wealthy enough to handle anything when he bought this club and look how quick billionaires can lose it all, sorry, i dont want some jackass who will leverage everything he owns for 30 years worth of payments for You’re Texas Rangers. all these guys do is take a loan for 600M with no interest in ever owning the club. hell, hicks doesnt own the club now, a bank does, just like your house, it makes me sick
mormons stole me and held me against my will with Oklahoma beer and 12+ hour work days.
hell, hicks doesnt own the club now, a bank does, just like your house, it makes me sick
That’s not true. They defaulted on the loan as part of a bargaining move to drive better terms on a refinancing. The lenders have not proceeded with a seizure of the team.
They did the same with a loan on the Stars in 2003.
The bank still holds the note until the loan has been paid in full. which it isnt
just like your home, you might have even refinanced it multiple times to leverage every cent out of it, just like hicks has with every entity he owns
mormons stole me and held me against my will with Oklahoma beer and 12+ hour work days.
Sure, leveraged buyouts are his business...
Debt isn’t necessarily a bad thing though, and he has been very successful through his career.
Many of the moves Hicks has made with the Rangers can be criticized, but one can’t question his desire to win. His biggest mistakes actually came from being over aggressive in trying to win. But after that failed, they went back to the drawing board (which required slashing the payroll) and have put the Rangers in about as good a spot currently as the franchise has ever been.
and he has been very successful through his career
we are currently discussing a man who just defaulted on a loan he has already refinanced previously and is openly selling and is part of his collateral for the loan that is a half billion dollars on another club which is due in less than 2 month…
now may not be the exact time to mention how successful the business operations of tom hicks are

The man invented leveraged buyouts
He lives and dies by leverage. A guy like Hicks is bound to get beat up pretty good in the economic climate post-2007.
That doesn’t change the fact that he’s been an extremely successful investor and businessmen for the better part of three decades.

In April, Hicks Sports Group defaulted on a $525 million loan backed by the Rangers and the Dallas Stars hockey club after failing to make a quarterly interest payment.

not the same loan used to purchase LFC
he used HSG as his collateral to get the loan for Kop Holdings which owns LFC and it is definitely due before the end of July
no conjecture, all this is highly known across the pond.

I think too much gets made of the "type" of owner a person will be
I hear all these concerns about whether a guy will be meddlesome or hands-off, whether he’ll be profit-minded or win-first, etc., and I think all those distinctions are highly overrated. Good owners and bad owners come in all flavors.
George Steinbrenner was the king of meddling, but his overall body of work suggests that he was a pretty darn successful owner. No one can deny Mark Cuban’s passion and desire to see his club win, but I absolutely despise the guy and root against the Mavericks just because I abhor his immaturity and idiocy. I regularly hear fans worry about an owner who puts profits first. Yet, I’d put John Henry right at the top of the list of best owners in baseball, and the guy didn’t attain his level of wealth by placing profits near the bottom of the priority list.
I wouldn’t mind an owner who is actively interested in the day-to-day operations of the club, nor would I mind an owner who rarely attends games and only signs checks. I don’t mind and owner who is an excellent businessmen and looks at every idea through the prism of profit potential (note: there is a major distinction between profit-minded and cheap, though I think many don’t realize that). All I care is that the owner of the Rangers, whether it be Hicks or someone else, let the club continue the trajectory it’s currently on. I couldn’t care less about the specifics of how he does it, it’s his team.

If I just owned the club…
"Elvis Andrus has just performed a miracle." -Eric Nadel
Exactly
Most people in positions to buy sports franchises didnt build their businesses the way Steinbrenner runs his baseball team. At the end of the day these guys are businessmen, they know how to make money, and whatever they decide to do with the profit making entities they acquire is up to them. We just have to hope that they do care and they know how to manage a large organization towards a common goal. We will see…..

My favorite DFW commercial jingle: babababa, Weeeestwaaaaay Foooord
Watching Rangers games on KTVT as a kid, I always looked forward to Westway’s commercials. Catchy jingle that would stay in your head for days, goofy cowboy guy with the awesome dollar-sign oversized sunglasses, and a solid cartoon at the end. For a youngster of 7 or however old I was when I saw those commercials, it was hard to beat.

I drove by his ranch the other day
Was wondering if it was “the” McDavid. Seemed pretty damn unimpressive. Kind of like Reatta at the beginning of Giant. Over the hills there easily could have been a dark castle with a permanent cloud hanging over it, though.
I'm wondering how David McDavid would figure out how to put that giant Texas-shaped logo of his on the Rangers experience whether you want it or not, like he does with the cars he sells.
He doesn't own those dealerships anymore FWIW

That's how he made all his money
sold the dealerships for a couple hundred mill — then tried to buy the Mavs and got denied — then had a deal for the Hawks/Trashers and Ted Turner backed out on him…McDavid sued and won over $300M

Fwiw...
I know who is heading up the group that Hicks was referring to in the statement today.
The group does not involve David McDavid (or any name most Rangers fans would recognize).
have a clue of the kinda $$$ the group has that we are talking about?
honestly groups scare the crap out of me b/c they tend to not have any financial flexibility (if they did they wouldnt need the others in the group) and move so slowly that its like passing an act in congress.
mormons stole me and held me against my will with Oklahoma beer and 12+ hour work days.
I don't know the specific numbers...
Fwiw, I am long-time friends with both the Hicks family and one of the principal figures of the possible new ownership group, and, speaking strictly as a Rangers fan (30-year season ticket holding family), I would much rather have Hicks retain ownership.
I would be very afraid that the new group could lead to Daniels/Ryan going elsewhere.
Are you trying to make me shoot myself in the penis?

Heh
My first car was a David McDavid hand me down from my dad.
I’m of the same mind of a lot of posters here. I think Hicks is starting to turn the corner as an owner and he has a good front office in place to start winning.
I’m worried that if he does sell, that a new owner would screw up the situation before realizing that what we currently have is headed in the right direction. And then we’ll endure another 10 years of futility before he realizes what Hicks realized in 2007.
