The 5-28 "Off Day" Minors Thread
OKC is already deep into their game, trailing 7-4. Josh Rupe gave up all 7 earned runs, as well as 9 hits in his continued effort to prove that he's terrible. Point taken, Josh.
Also, Joaquin Arias, Julio Borbon and Greg Golson have all walked for the second straight game. Golson has 4 walks in his last 6 plate appearances.I don't know what's going on either.
Hickory faces off against Delmarva again T 6:05 tonight, with lefty oddity Yoo-Hee Nam going for the Crawdads. Carlos Pimentel has been sent back to extended, so maybe we'll see the debut of Neil Ramirez pretty soon.
Frisco's Kasey Kiker gets it started at 7:05 against former Rangers affiliate Tulsa. He'll face off against fringe prospect Esmil Rogers, a 23 year old with good control. The Tulsa team, save the very good Jhoulys Chacin, is filled with fringe prospects like Darin Holcomb and Chris Nelson, but they all sport good walk rates and comparatively low strikeout rates. It'll be a good test for KK.
Bakersfield gets going at 9:30 against the hated Stockton Ports, who saw the debut of Jemile "Not Justin Smoak" Weeks yesterday. Michael Main will face off against Ben Hornbeck, who's a lefty with good offspeed stuff that sports a huge strikeout rate. Pray for Engel Beltre tonight.
Discussion: Mitch Moreland
So with his promotion to the Texas League, Mitch Moreland finds himself in an age-appropriate league for the first time in his career. Moreland was named Topps Midwest League player of the year last year, but failed to make BA's league top 20 list or the Rangers top 30 prospects list (he was 31).
Moreland's start this year has been exceptional, but through his career, he's been overwhelmingly consistent. His walk rates and strikeout rates are almost the same this year in Bakersfield as they were last year in Clinton. His performance against righthanders (.921 OPS for his career) is actually inferior to his performance against lefties (.940 OPS). His strikeout rate has never exceeded 15% in full season ball, and his walk rate has never dropped below 10%. In short, this is not the Mitch Moreland who was drafted in the 17th round in 2007. His plate coverage has improved, and his approach is as good as it gets in the system. In fact, for the year, his wOBA is actually the best of any Rangers prospect (including Pina, Smoak and Bianucci).
So what do you make of Mitch Moreland? Is he a burgeoning slugger or just a guy who's found success against inferior competition? Where does he rank relative to the 2nd tier sluggers of this organization (Bianucci, Max Ramirez)? Is he the 2nd coming of Nate Gold? Emerson Frostad? Or is this legit?
Here's a video of Beltre-Lawson-Moreland hitting against Tim Alderson. Moreland is the third batter.
This article briefly describes Moreland's approach to lefties vs. righties.
Against southpaws, Moreland drags down his personal power expectations even further, and it's reflective in his numbers. While the Amory, Miss. native has a better on-base percentage against left-handed pitchers (.400) than right-handed pitchers (.389), three of his 32 extra-base hits have been against lefties. Moreland insists the numbers bear out a product of design.
"A lot of the times I face lefties when runners are in scoring position," he said, "And I really want to try and get the ball in play, make something happen. I kind of look to hit up the middle or the other way against a lefty."

Moreland
Until he proves otherwise, I’ll stick w/ legit. We’ve had so much analysis on the pitchers, I’m excited about some offensive prospects. Particularly, Moreland, Max and the Nooch.

Moreland II
AA will tells us where Moreland stands on the prospect list. I think he could put up an ops ~.900 for the rest of the year which wouldn’ t be too bad. I think he could ultimately be trade bait.

I wonder how much leaving Nooch in Hickory has to do with giving Hickory some actual offense.
Without him they’re beyond horrible.
With all those stud pitcher around maybe they’re willing to hold Nooch back a month or two to give those kids a chance at more of a winning atmosphere, cause without him Hickory would prolly score 4 runs per week or some pathetic shit like that.

You're probably on to something.
They should have been better, but Clark Murphy, Jared Bolden, Eric Fry, and Matt West haven’t performed well at all. Pretty disappointing first 8 weeks for the Hickory offense.
Morrison and Hollander have been a good little boost. If they keep it up and someone else wakes up, we could see Nooch bumped to Bakersfield before too long.

Groundout, the reason why he was sent down is to limit the amount of innings pitched
He only had like 50 last season, i think 90 i max innings for the 19 yr old this season.
This is confusing...

Omar Poveda
apparently throws an excellent 2 seamer/sinker. I did not know that.
"Hustle doesn't cost a dime and it looks good." - Pete Rose as Channeled by Marcus Lemon
Poveda's 2-seamer
I think that Scott Garner mentioned few starts ago that Poveda is using a 2-seamer for the first time this season. If someone can confirm that, then it might help explain Poveda’s drastic drop in strikeouts.
It'd also explain his quick working ness
"Hustle doesn't cost a dime and it looks good." - Pete Rose as Channeled by Marcus Lemon
He's not throwing his change up as much.
I think that’s probably the biggest reason his strikeouts are down. The last few starts I’ve seen have been four-seam heavy with a bunch of curves and only an occasional change up. I assume they’re limiting him to something like 10 change ups per game to make him focus on his curveball. He barely threw his two-seamer in his last start in Frisco.
He definitely had been throwing it quite a bit in first several starts. It’s got some good arm side run to it, but it’s an 85-87 MPH pitch mostly. It doesn’t get great sinking action, and it honestly doesn’t look too different from his four-seamer.
When they’re satisfied with his curveball, I think his change up is going to jump back into the equation. His strikeout rate is going to shoot way, way up.

"Hustle doesn't cost a dime and it looks good." - Pete Rose as Channeled by Marcus Lemon
Reminds me of a triple *not* awarded to Guilder Rodriguez during the last homestand.
He hit a weakish fly ball to CF. The CF, playing in left-center, came charging in at an angle, dove for it and missed. The ball rolled by, Guilder kept moving. For some reason, the official scorer called it a single and two-base error. It blew my mind. Still does when I think about it.

Two innings before it, he hit a carbon copy the other way. Gilbert dove for it, missed it, and Guilder was awarded a triple.

What did you think of that side-arming lefty, Heuser
that night? His numbers looked poor coming in, but he dominated equally against righties and lefties. Got Smoak on the backdoor slurve(?) looking.
"I saw your act, just didn't make it for me. Just a lot of fluff."
I didn't make any notes about him.
I believe that’s the day that the bullpen shut Frisco down. Heuser pitched twice in the series, but I can’t say I was specifically impressed.
Smoak moves back and forth between good and horrible. Having watched all of his home games, I keep waiting for him to start dominating at bats. Every time I check his K-rate, I’m surprised at how low it is. Anecdotally, he seems to strike out a lot and hit a lot of weak grounders.
I was kind of hoping he’d hit in front of Moreland instead of vice-versa. As unimpressive as he’s been in my eyes, pitchers sure as hell aren’t giving him much to hit.

Despite only managing to put up an OPS of .529 in 41 games, Garcia turned enough heads to get a coveted invitation to participate in the FIL. He continued to turn heads once he arrived.
Garcia, at least at this point, doesn’t look much like a professional athlete. In fact, he looks a lot like David Eckstein’s younger, more Latin American brother. That’s not to say that Garcia only gets by on guts and the good face. Garcia is extremely athletic and flashes more tools than his slight appearance would indicate.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see Garcia take a big step forward next season and solidify his place as yet another legit prospect in the deepest farm system in baseball.
