Some chats and Rangers items

Kevin Goldstein has a chat session up today that includes questions on Elvis Andrus, Derek Holland, Neftali Feliz, and Martin Perez...

Keith Law has a draft-intensive chat session up from today, as well.

Jim Callis did a chat yesterday where he suggests the Mark Teixeira trade was the best trade of the last 10 years.

Singing a familiar refrain, Rob Neyer says that for all the talk about the new Ryan-esque pitching programs the Rangers have implemented, it is the defense, not the pitching, which has led to improved run prevention for Texas.

Kevin Sherrington runs through a list of possible buyers for the Rangers, with the most interesting possibility being Eddie Gaylord, who got jacked around by Reinsdorf & Co. once before about 20 years ago.

The press release from Tom Hicks about the possible sale of a controlling interest in the team is here.

Shit!

I am very nervous about the prospects of a controlling interest ownership change, now that this has been confirmed.

Ownership Change

I tend to be an optimist about most things, but I would think many, many potential owners would see the Rangers as a very attractive opportunity with a high upside. The team has underperformed in a huge media market. They have a good ballpark and excellent short term prospects on the field. I would think someone would see the opportunity to pick up the Rangers and vastly improve their value over the next decade with an improved on field product and an increased share of the DFW media market. OTH they could buy the team, strip it down and cash the revenue-sharing checks, but I think that is less likely.

by pblack on May 28, 2009 4:49 PM CDT up reply actions

All of your points are valid.

I really don’t see someone stripping things down further though. My main concern is a change in the draft/intl market strategy, and general stewardship role as others here have expressed.

I never trust a damn thing out of Grandpa Urine’s mouth, but this does confirm it.

draft and intl market

That would be my #1 concern. Would the new majority owner be willing to continually spend money in the international free agent market and draft.

Eddie Gaylord is the son of Edward Gaylord (deceased), founder of Gaylord Entertainment

Edward Sr. started out with the Daily Oklahoman newspaper in OKC and built a vast entertainment and media empire which includes the Gaylord Hotel properties (including the Gaylord Texan, the Opryland Hotels, and other resort/entertainment properties). At one time they owned CMT and TNN, which have since been sold. Gaylord Entertainment still owns the Grand Ole Opry and 650 WSM (the home of the Opry and the radio station which essentially built country music). I think they own the General Jackson Showboat in Nashville as well. For a while (don’t know if this is still the case), the family was a major shareholder in Bass Pro Shops.

Due to a major gift by the family to the university, OU’s football stadium is now called Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. The school’s mass communication college is named after the family as well.

The Gaylord family has a few dollars.

Well

it’s pretty obvious.

1) This offense could use a shot in the arm.
2) The easiest position to upgrade is 1B.

There is nothing in here that is surprising. I just don’t get why people think sending Chris down would be the end of the world. Didn’t seem to hurt Cruz any.

Replacing Davis

The problem with replacing Davis is that we don’t have any real good options, despite what that story says.

Blalock and Jones should be platooning at DH. You could play Jones every day, however that would require him playing a good bit of 1B, which I suspect wouldn’t end well. Plus, if Jones plays every day, then I guess you end up platooning Byrd with Blalock and playing Murphy every day, or playing Blalock every day and platooning Byrd and Murphy, neither of which is a really a good option.

All of that assumes it’s too early to call up Smoak, which I think is right at this point. There simply aren’t any reasonable options in AAA.

by Darrell McKown on May 28, 2009 9:08 PM CDT up reply actions

“I’m not concerned or frustrated by the strikeouts,” Davis said.

You should be, Chris.

I have an irrational hatred of Chris Davis because his Ks are way too ugly and irrational liking of Matt Harrison because he's a lefty - deal with it.

by JBImaknee on May 28, 2009 5:17 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't care about them either

…as long as he does his job at the plate, as he says later in the paragraph. If he does that his K totals may remain high but it will come down a little as he gets more walks and hits.

I’m not sure sending him down will help him make those adjustments. If they do I’m fine with that. Like Cahill said, it wouldn’t be the end of the world. People worry too much about players’ confidence and emotions. They’re people like you and me. If you were a ballplayer and were sent down to AAA because you were hitting like Davis, wouldn’t you understand that? I think most people would.

I sure would miss his defense, though. 1st is the easiest position to play, but there are players like Davis and Teixeira who are so good at it that it’s actually noticeable. Palmeiro, too. We’ve seen a lot of good defensive 1B’s around here.

What’s JT Snow doing these days?

question?

I’m not wanting to argue the merits of Cuban as an owner, plus he has stated he wasn’t going to be pursuing any MLB team after the Cubbies deal fell through but my question is:

Given that he just recently worked with the league couldn’t a Cuban offer be “fasttracked” relative to another offer? If Hicks needs money FAST, might how quick you could complete a deal be a consideration when Hicks is mulling offers, not just who offers the most $?

Top ten is pretty rarified air, though

Here’s this year’s list: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=8506

Of that group, Wieters, Price, Porcello, and Rasmus will have extinguished their eligibility by next season. Not sure about Snider. That leaves Bumgarner, Alvarez, Feliz, Posey, and Heyward, none of whom strike me as candidates to drop out of the top ten. So, essentially, you’ve got five spots open for guys rising. Smoak probably has a legitimate candidacy for one of those spots, today KG mentioned Mike Stanton as a guy with a chance to be at the very top. Vitters is hitting like a madman. Strasburg is going to be lurking around. That doesn’t even mention Ynoa, Hosmer, Beckham, Moustakas, and some others who could be in play as well.

For Perez to jump into the top ten when he didn’t even make this year’s top 100, he would have to do something ridiculous, like post a sub-1.00 ERA from here on out.

I realize this. That's what I meant by "Top 10 is really ridiculously high for any prospect".

Though I’d argue that Pedro Alvarez is indeed in danger of dropping out of the top 10 overall prospects. A .238 avg and .800 ops aren’t anything to write home about. I think he’ll be fine, but top 10 is for true world beating studs, and so far he ain’t that.

Martin probably won’t reach that status this year just cause it’s such an elite group, but to say that he has absolutely no shot when he’s penis-punching low-A at 18 is a little too emphatic for me.

The guy’s performance is borderline ridiculous so far.

“Martin probably won’t reach that status this year just cause it’s such an elite group, but to say that he has absolutely no shot when he’s penis-punching low-A at 18 is a little too emphatic for me.”

I can’t disagree with that one bit. It’s not unreasonable to think that jumping to the top 100 is likely impossible, but yeah, it was awful emphatic this early in the season considering what Martin is done. If he ends up skipping Bakersfield and going all D-Hol on the Texas League for a month or so, such an emphatic statement might look foolish.

As for Ynoa, does anyone know where he’s going to be assigned?

Still early

but Alonso/Smoak are destroying Hosmer/Alvarez.

Yep.

But, like you said, it’s early.

Especially on Hosmer.

Dear God do I love the fact that we have Smoak, though.

He hasn't been hitting for power so far... which is confusing.

But he’s still only 19 and that 17% BB-rate sure is pretty.

I don’t want to have his babies right now, but I’d at least still like to hold one of them. Maybe baby sit one or two so he and the Mrs. can go see a movie one weekend or something. We’ll always be friends, I know that much.

Hosmer

he’s picked up lately, his May numbers aren’t bad. He’s not hitting lefties at all.

if MP...

can jump up into the top 25-30 this year, then next season he can move into the top 10, and he’s what, 20? that would be ok with me.

Fukumori? Ahn?

If it is Aki, you’re thinking of… When was he brought in? How long has he been there? Why haven’t the Rangers announced the signing?

by NoNameOnCard on May 29, 2009 2:04 AM CDT up reply actions

What's to get confused?

one is japanese and one is korean.

Aki was released at some point last year and then re-signed during the off-season.

I don't remember hearing anything about us resigning him.

Of course, my memory of such things can be highly suspect.

Linky?

Do you have a link or transaction date?

The most recent news I can find on him is a report of him planning to work out for teams in January, including the Rangers and Padres, but there is no report of him signing anywhere/anywhen.

Well i learned sumpin
Crow has not signed the permission slip for Washington to draft him again. Not many people know that one, but if a player is drafted and goes unsigned, he has the right to not allow that same team to draft him again.

i read somewhere that he gave the ok for them to draft him again. Scheppers denied that right to Pitt.

Brett (Mount Prospect, IL): Is Kenny Powers draft eligible or can he sign as a FA?

I'm starting to get really excited about Shelby Miller

Law says he is one of 3 with the highest upside pitchers in the draft.

I hope he’s on the board when we pick

A perfect example of the typical Socal baseball fan
Draft Question! Hey Jim, Could the Padres work out deals with the Mariners, tell them they’ll take Carlos Silva’s horrendous contract off their hands and with the Nationals some kind of package that includes Kyle Blanks (not to mention both teams still get a player in the draft slot) so that Strasburg ends up at 3? Or would MLB step in because everyone would know what “future considerations” would mean?
